To me, the themes and the way Burnt Offerings feels like a concept album make it a great example of progressive, melodic thrash. It’s not just one thrash song after another; it has a lot of variety that really pays off once you give it a few listens and let it grow on you. It is definitely more complex and progressive than the two classics that came before it, and it has quiet moments. Even though it’s a more difficult listen than basic heavy metal, it’s still an awesome Iced Earth record! It might get overshadowed by their earlier hits, but I find the way the songs are built to be really entertaining. I know Jon Schaffer is a perfectionist and is super critical of his own work, and has some negative feelings about this album and the era of the band around these years, but I still see a ton of value in this album. To me, this progressive, melodic thrash metal. It’s Iced Earth, c'mon!
