The band and their production team headed by producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange (AC/DC's Back in Black) achieved their grand goal of creating a work in which every song, each and every song, sounds like a hit and could be used as a single for radio and television. Def Leppard's Hysteria is the rock equivalent of Michael Jackson's Thriller: every song stands out all by itself and could be used as a single release and music video.

After the massive success of 1983's Pyromania, the band spent over three grueling years making this record. The creation of Hysteria was hit with constant delays, most notably the horrific car accident on New Year's Eve in 1984 that cost drummer Rick Allen his left arm. Showing incredible resilience, the band stood by Allen as he relearned how to play with a custom electronic drum kit. Clocking in at 62 minutes and 32 seconds, Hysteria remains the longest studio album in Def Leppard's catalog and a true testament to overcoming the odds.
