A reviewer on The Metal Archives likes the debut, but is not super impressed, and gives it a score of 75 out of 100:
The aptly named SLYTHERIN sits within a similar realm of atmospheric black metal to Lustre and Eldamar, creating elaborate soundscapes that place focus on ambience and texture above all. Thematically, the band bases itself on the Harry Potter novels, which is what really piqued my interest in the first place. In a genre saturated with countless bands basing their music on fantasy themes and various literary works, I’ve always been somewhat surprised at the lack of prevalent Potter metal. That being said, music set within the wizarding world faces a huge challenge due to the inevitable comparisons with the excellence of the film scores by John Williams. So, bursting onto the scene with debut full-length A Tale We’ll Tell Of What Hath Been…, can Slytherin conjure up success?
It might sound like I’ve grumbled a bit on this one, but ultimately I think there’s some fantastic potential here. Slytherin nail it with a unique theme and aesthetic, and there are some magnificent and truly stirring melodies on display. With a worthy mix and time spent on perfecting and presenting lyrics and song structures, these guys could be a big name in the future. As it stands, I’m hopeful but not blown away; if I had been, I might have gotten this review out a bit quicker.
