celebrating the anniversary of Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction
July 14, 1992, marks the official street date for Megadeth’s massive fifth studio album, Countdown to Extinction, dropped via Capitol Records. This landmark release stands as the second studio effort to showcase the legendary line-up of Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson, and Nick Menza. The album delivered some of the band's most iconic, career-defining anthems, including "Symphony of Destruction," "Sweating Bullets," and "Skin o' My Teeth," all of which got significant airplay. I think fans to this day want to hear these hits!
Countdown to Extinction was met with widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its sharp, politically charged lyricism and a more streamlined, hard-hitting sonic direction compared to the hyper-technical thrash of Rust in Peace. The record made a massive commercial impact, debuting at Number 2 on the Billboard 200. It went on to achieve double-platinum status and earned a nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards, while the title track itself took home the Humane Society's Genesis Award for spotlighting animal rights. Wikipedia points out that to honor the record's legacy, Megadeth launched a special 20th-anniversary tour in 2012 where they performed the masterpiece in its entirety, accompanied by a deluxe reissue later that November and a definitive live album chronicle in September 2013.
I like this album, it's Megadeth!
