Look! A Finnish band that does not play "melodic 'death' metal": Axegressor: Last (Listenable Records)
Don't you hate it when some "expert" knucklehead talks about the "Finnish" sound? This or that band sounds so "Finnish"? Seriously, what is "Finnish"? Sounding sad or depressed is a "Finnish" thing?
I still don't understand what the "British" or "U.S." metal sound is? "Kill'em All" is a major copy-cut-and-paste-and-sample of U.K. bands whose music was "U.S. blues reinterpreted" by British gentlemen, as Canadian treasure Rush's Geddy Lee has lovingly explained.
Anywho, Axegressor does not give a flying flip about any of that nationalistic nonsense!
In fact, right now I am remembering a little story that I invented about when this band started out years ago.
When this band began, they were trying to figure out who would do the vocals. Then, the bassist tried out. The drummer, who was drunk, jokingly said, “Your screams sound a lot like 80s Schmier, brothaman! Those screams are cool, dog! ” and they all laughed in a very Finnish way, which is the only way people in Finland know how to laugh, but which is also similar to the way that people laugh in Minnesota, another land of many, many, many lakes and a few vegetarian restaurants.
After one rehearsal, they all passed out after drinking and watching the news in order to think up song lyrics (they are a thrash band, after all). In the morning they woke up in a dumpster behind the local bar, but the drummer remembered (barely) his observation. And they decided to keep that vocal style.
Axegressor is interested in playing thrash and that’s the end of the story. Gang shouts, fast riffs, speedy drumming and headbanging. This album is strictly for those that can never get enough thrash. Axegressor is thrash 100%. 80s, retro thrash or call it what you prefer, it’s all the same with Axegressor. You no like, you walk away.
Ok, c'mon, let's do this, then. Here we go, if you like ... Destruction (of course!), Overkill (does everybody like this band?), Nuclear Assault (remember them?), and dozens of other thrash bands from the old days (when you were not born yet) and the younger thrashers (that hate anything with the word "core" in it), then this band makes the music for you.
If you hate thrash or are tired of thrash or go around complaining about thrash, hey, maybe you should also check out this band so that you have a new reason to be angry.
