Spitfire - Denial to Fall (classic-style heavy metal from Greece)

Nowadays the debut album First Attack (1987; EMI) by Spitfire (Greece; 1984-1987, 1989-1990, 1990-1991 [as Speedfire], 1993-1999, 2006-present) sounds adept at melodic, polished ear-friendly songs. Things were looking up in the 80s. Unfortunately, problems, including a tragic car accident in the 80s that forced singer Dinos Costakis to retire permanently from music, prevented the band from taking advantage of their promising start. Later on, the band continued but it was not until 2009 that the second album was released. Now in 2022 on the third album (nine songs in 44 minutes) it looks like only the guitarist Elias Loginidis remains as the one constant from 1984. The sound is a robust, heavy, chunky contemporary production, while the music itself is galloping, grooving and melodic riffs, all within the context of headbanging rhythms. Elias Loginidis has been making music since at least 1984, so it’s no wonder that the album sounds profes-sional. The singing is strong, a full voice yet melodic. The music has plenty of uptempo energy, and it has no cheesy ballads (no ballads, period), just very competent song-writing and singing. Isn’t this the sound of perseverance?! The Greek band is sounding better than ever.
