out now: Thy Worshiper - shamanic metal

Thy Worshiper is a rather unique experience. The fifth album finds them deepening their interpretation of the shamanic sounds. The eight tracks in 54 minutes requires a very patient listener willing to find out what the Polish/Irish group is all about. It is not an easy listen and it is not instant gratification, but rather the type of music that is basically impossible to absorb with a couple of listens.
They are an intelligent bunch. They begin the album as some type of black/death music, something that fans will understand: the growling, the blasting speed and other such things that are there to not freak people out from the beginning. They want to ease people into the shamanism that is at the center of what they do. It won't take very long for the listener to notice that the metal music keeps finding small bridges to the other side. Sooner or later, it will hit the listener: Things have gone into unique territories and the listener may start to panic, "Do I want to continue? Things have gotten pretty different. Where am I?"
Don't panic. You will be ok. Thy Worshiper knows very well what they are doing. It is not immature, experimental weirdness for the sake of weirdness. If you stay, all will be clear; it's just going to take a while. Again, this is what this band does, and it is an experienced band, it is not some bedroom demo solo project by an inexperienced person pushing buttons to get sampled sounds.
As long as you are interested in the idea of shamanism (or whatever else you prefer to call it) in extreme metal music, then the album will be rewarding.
Know this: Thy Worshiper began in 1993 in Poland. They live in Ireland. This is their fifth album. They have been at it for a long while. They take a long time to make albums. It takes a minute for their music to be understood, but the music is done skillfully. They hope that they can find intelligent and patient listeners willing to dedicate some time to take the journey with them.

out now: Apostle of Solitude - melodic doom from Indiana, U.S.

Here is an important album for fans of traditional, melodic doom. Apostle of Solitude's fifth full-length (six tracks in 36 minutes) sticks to the tradition of the classics by keeping the album at a reasonable duration, and packing it with ear-friendly, melodic, melancholic midpaced doom. New audiences interested in singing within doom may be surprised by the quality of the singing, while the older fans of the band already know the quality of the band. Simplicity and memorability in the songwriting are indispensable for the sound of the band. It is very accessible and with only a couple of listens it all makes sense right quick.

K Amon K - neosymphonic extreme metal from France

For this French neosymphonic extreme metal band Metal Archives shows the line-up as: Fyr on bass; Kra Altar (See also: Doctor Livingstone, Sektemtum, ex-Crystalium, ex-Mütiilation , Panzer Flower, ex-Arkhon Infaustus, ex-Reverence, ex-Ad Hominem) on drums; KZG (Eternal, Neraeon, ex-Crystalium) on guitars and keyboards; and Kra Cillag (Neraeon, ex-Crystalium, ex-Pavillon Rouge, ex-Demise, ex-Black Domina) on vocals, guitars, and keyboards. Doom and black metal are two components of the sound in a neosymphonic context, and apparently the personnel have worked with other in other projects or have known each other for 20 years. However, Metal Archives shows this entity as new and this is the debut album.

ANIMALS AS LEADERS - The Problem of Other Minds (Official Music Video)

Instrumental progressive djentists Animals as Leaders have a new video with interesting interpretive dancing. Here it is in case you missed it. Below it is a live video in case that you would like to hear what the band sounds like live.
Wikipedia: Animals as Leaders is an American instrumental progressive metal band from Washington, D.C., United States. It currently consists of guitarists Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Garstka, having been formed by Abasi in 2007. They are a prominent band within the djent scene. Prosthetic Records released the band's eponymous debut album in 2009. They went on to release the albums Weightless (2011), The Joy of Motion (2014), and The Madness of Many (2016). Animals as Leaders formed after guitarist Tosin Abasi's previous metalcore band, Reflux, disbanded. The heavy metal record label Prosthetic Records saw Abasi's guitar work and asked him to create a solo album for them. Abasi initially declined, feeling such an endeavor would be "...egotistical and unnecessary." Abasi decided to take a year off to study music, as he felt he was unable to reach his peak at guitar playing. After Abasi had completed his course, he took up the label on the offer of a solo project. The name Animals as Leaders was inspired by Daniel Quinn's 1992 novel Ishmael, which addresses anthropocentrism. Abasi coined the name as a reminder "that we're all essentially animals".

Cult of Yog - new side project from Orator (Washington) guitar magician

Here in the western side of the state of Washington, United States, some local fans have seen the technical-brutal wizardry of Orator. That's a good local band that is both is blazing and skilled at their instruments. Now, out of the blue, it seems, Orator guitarist Matt Stecz appears with his solo project called Cult of Yog doing guitars, bass and vocals, and with fellow Orator partner in metal Elijah Losch taking care of beating the drums. This side project is not technical, but rather a more traditional type of extremity with growling and heaviness with a lot more melody than Orator. It's something less technically proficient than Orator and more accessible, easier to understand on a first listen, something closer to traditional death metal with some black metal guitar work embedded into the proceedings. The vocals are low-growled, the riffs invite you to bang your head and there's a feel-good, fun vibe to the music. If Orator is total American wrist-breaking carpal tunnel technicality, Cult of Yog is European headbanging extreme metal (five tracks in almost 18 minutes).

Ergholae Somptator - extreme metal from France

French avant-gardists Ergholae Somptator today hit the ground running with their weird and wild form of extreme metal. The music sometimes goes rather fast, but it may go sideways and then confusion may set in, but that's probably how they would like the audience to feel: not really comfortable, not really understanding it at first, and maybe a little angry at the music, as in "What are you guys doing?!" While listening to Ergholae Somptator your friends will be saying, "Yeah! That's fire!" as they begin to bang their heads in unison and y'all are enjoying the extreme metal hoedown, but when the music begins to take some unexpected turns, they will be saying, "I don't know if I can bang my head to this music anymore." Indeed. That is a question to ponder once and again when going into the second album by Ergholae Somptator.

Dilapidation - the brutes are out of their caves again

Barbaric cavemen of death doom Dilapidation (Washington state, USA) are back in action a new song that celebrates everything that is the opposite of happiness and joy. Is there a new album on the agenda? Have they changed their style? Is misery still their best friend? All those questions will have to wait until more music escapes from the cave. For now, the barbarians remain as barbarian as before. Maybe that's the answer right there.

IKITAN - instrumental heavy rock from Italy

Power trio IKITAN (Italy) has some new music planned for December. They make instrumental proggressive heavy rock that focuses on groove and subdued melody. Without any vocals, the music goes at a very comfortable pace, in a meandering, scenic style of melodic heaviness. IKITAN is a laid-back heaviness that goes at a steady pace, the melodies have a way of giving the impression that everything is moving in a circle. Sometimes one gets the impression that an instrumental combination of 1970s blues rock, like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, could join with progressive blues rock, like Pink Floyd, and after a few iterations along the way through various tunnels of time travel maybe one could arrive at something like IKITAN's "post-rock." Maybe. Perhaps. Who knows. Maybe you do! Anyway, it's chill heaviness without any yelling or screaming to distract you from the music.
ANNOUNCEMENT from IKITAN:
🌋 "DARVAZA Y BRINICLE" 🌊 OUT ON 3 DECEMBER 2021 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ Exactly one year (minus one day) after the publication of "Twenty-Twenty", we're proud to announce the release of our first tape, "Darvaza y Brinicle", by Taxi Driver Records, out on Friday 3rd December. 📼 The tape, printed in 30 copies, includes the two new singles "Darvaza" and "Brinicle" on side A, and "Twenty-Twenty Live at Forte Geremia" on side B. Foul Temple - black metal from Australia

Foul Temple
An Empty Grave Awaits
August 21st, 2021
Foul Temple seems to be an anonymous entity in Adelaide, Australia, according to Bandcamp. This recording is four songs in 21 minutes. It is total black metal necro grimness with shrieked, voice-ripping vocals. The sound quality is ok and fits this type of do-it-yourself demo in which guitars and vocals dominate, and drumming sounds like programming, and is somewhat muffled. Despite these typical traits of a DIY recording, it is exactly the type of demo that devoted black metal fanatics would enjoy a lot. The blazing speed, the paint-melting screaming and the classic-style guitar work are undeniable and require exactly five seconds to see that this is serious black metal meant to get people banging their heads and lifting up those metal horns. Metal Archives shows no previous recordings, so this is a good beginning. Convincing stuff.

Ashgabat - black metal from Oregon, U.S.A.

Ashgabat: Perverse Summoning July 31st, 2021
This Eugene, Oregon, U.S. black metal entity is Eth (bass, songwriting) and Ohlde (guitars, drums, vocals, lyrics). They are or have been associated with other acts like Occult Blood, Iced, Vomit Violence, Gash, Lodge of the Empty Bed, Darkosis, and a bunch of other names. The recording is three songs (17 minutes) of classic-style grim black metal for headbanging. The sound quality is pretty good, and the drum (programming?)* sound and guitar dominate, although the bass guitar is pretty audible, too. One can hear what the guitar is playing (fast, tremolo, and some midtempo). There is a bit of melody, but this is not melodic black metal, just prototypical grim black metal. The vocals are pure black metal, and nothing else. There is very little fat on this recording. Good work! *(FYI, Ohlde is a real drummer, and this drumming sounds skilled, not just like programmed stuff).

Æxylium - Mountains (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

Italian folk band Æxylium now has the second album out and it is called The Fifth Season. An experience in contrasts, the sound has growling and melodic singing and various instruments that fit the genre of folk, and they keep the music uptempo along the lines of melodic death metal and power metal for an enjoyable listen. Being a multi-genre sound, expect the music to sound like a combination of different sounds working together.

Armored Saint - Symbol of Salvation Live

Armored Saint is celebrating 30 years since the release of the Symbol of Salvation album with a live performance of the entire work. Fans of traditional melodic heavy metal may want to check out this release. It is one of the band's best albums in their discography for sure.
Armored Saint
Symbol of Salvation Live
Metal Blade Records
22 October 2021
Wikipedia: "Armored Saint is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1982. Since 1990, the band has consisted of John Bush on lead vocals, Joey Vera on bass, Jeff Duncan on guitar and the Sandoval brothers (Gonzo and Phil) on drums and guitar, respectively. Of the current lineup, Bush and Vera are the two constant members. To date, the band has released eight studio albums, one EP, two live albums and one compilation album. As one of the leaders of the Los Angeles heavy metal scene, Armored Saint achieved moderate success during the 1980s with their 1983 self-titled EP and first three studio albums: March of the Saint (1984), Delirious Nomad (1985) and Raising Fear (1987). Prior to the release of their fourth studio album Symbol of Salvation (1991), the band was plagued by extended inactivity, due to record company issues and the death of their original guitarist Dave Prichard, who died of leukemia in 1990. Armored Saint eventually broke up when Bush joined Anthrax in 1992 to replace Joey Belladonna, but reunited in 1999, and has continued to tour and record since then."

Ted Nugent - "Come And Take It" lyric video

Below is the new song "Come and Take it" by legendary rocker Ted Nugent from the 2022 album Detroit Muscle. Below is the also the artwork and track list for the album.
ABOUT: "Ted Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock & roll history, selling more than 40 million albums, performing more than 6,750 high-octane concerts, and continuing to set attendance records at venues around the globe. Cranking out hits like Cat Scratch Fever, Great White Buffalo, Free for All, Fred Bear and the iconic Stranglehold, he has garnered international acclaim."
Wikipedia: "Theodore Anthony Nugent (born December 13, 1948) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and activist. He initially gained fame as the lead guitarist and occasional lead vocalist of The Amboy Dukes, a band formed in 1963 that played psychedelic rock and hard rock. After dissolving the band, he embarked on a solo career. Nugent is known for his Gibson Byrdland, his bluesy and frenzied guitar playing and his energetic live shows. Despite possessing a distinctive, wide-ranging singing voice, Nugent recorded and toured with other lead singers during much of his early solo career, including Derek St. Holmes, Charlie Huhn, Brian Howe and Meat Loaf, only taking on full lead vocal duties later on. His biggest hit was 1977's "Cat Scratch Fever," on which he sang the lead vocals. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was part of the supergroup Damn Yankees. In later years, Nugent has drawn attention for his outspoken conservative political views, as well as his vociferous advocacy of hunting and gun ownership rights."

Whitechapel - the changing sounds of deathcore

The first three Whitechapel albums were good examples of U.S. deathcore, but the Tennessee bunch is now on their eighth album, and it is now a much more appealing type of music, not just deathcore for deathcore fans. Nowadays they have added tons of variety to their music, and one song by itself is probably not a good representation of all the things that they do. Some deathcore remains here and there, like in the deep growl and some of that breakdown energy, but there is more to it than chugging-and-breakdown growling going on. For instance, the melodic singing (similar to Opeth) is a big part of the album. They do songs that could be called "power ballads," if you can believe it, but more along the lines of "deathcore power ballads" (which is not really deathcore, is it?). Another way to look at Whitechapel nowadays is they are something like a former deathcore band that is doing something similar to what Opeth did during the first ten years: the spirit of Whitechapel is to go beyond a genre. Some of this music sounds very radio-friendly and has U.S. pop (yes, pop) sensibilities. It is all these things: Opethcore, emo deathcore, melodic extreme metal, and prog deathcore.
The point: People that have pigeonholed Whitechapel as deathcore may be very surprised to discover where the band is now (and for the last few years, actually). This is now new-era Whitechapel and the band is now confident that they can do many things beyond deathcore, and they are also finding out that their audience has also gotten older along with them, the fans have gotten married and have families, and have day jobs, and are no longer just angry "deathcore kids." The band's audience seems very ready to accept all the changes the band is doing, almost like the band timed things perfectly to the age of their fans. Of course, they have much older fans, and are getting much younger fans all the time now because the music is rather convincing, but the band's original base of fans seems a lot more ready for this more expansive and melodic sound. That probably would not have been the case back in 2008, and the band did not have the experience and confidence to do what they are doing now.
RECOMMENDATION: Begin with the last song (number 11) here below and see how far things have come since the debut album all those years ago in 2007.

Blood Sport - speed metal from Finland

The story goes that the two Finns were thinking that there was not enough speed metal in the world. In Finland there is a special saying that only Finnish say, and it goes, "If you want something done, do it yourself. Git'er dun!" That's what they did. They say they are descended as a mix of Judas Priest and Venom. Maybe add some Tank into that equation. If you could imagine some of those classic Tank riffs from "Filth Hounds of Hades" (1982), then you'd be right in the neighborhood where you need to be. Tank's "Shellshock," "Struck by Lightning," and "Turn Your Head Around" from said album and the music of Blood Sport sure have some commonalities. Blood Sport is speed metal for the obsessed with fast, classic heavy metal.

Inpathos - melodic death metal in Washington

In 2020 here in the state of Washington there emerged out of the grey and rainy city of Bellingham (in western Washington, some 20 miles from the Canadian border) a new band called Inpathos. They play melodic death metal, and some readers may remember seeing the name and music mentioned in this zine. In 2020 they had a debut album and now in 2021 they have a second album called March Towards a Blackened Sun. An interesting detail from recently is that they have decided to publish photos of the band, and it turns out that it appears that they are, in fact, a band with real people! They have published these photos of the band members. Anyway, check out the new album (so far, it is a new album every year!) and see what you think.

Shadowland - traditional heavy metal from the U.S.

Shadowland
The Necromancers Castle
No Remorse Records
October 22nd, 2021
Beginning in 2018 New York City's traditionalists Shadowland have been working in defense of big-riff, melodic, headbanging classic sounds. With only a demo and an EP to their name previously, their newest work is the full-length (eight songs in 38 minutes). They call themselves "English heavy metal" and it’s true/classic heavy metal. Shadowland is not far removed from classic Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon and that general style. The songwriting and musicianship demonstrate a skilled interpretation of the classics as contemporary-classic heavy metal. It’s easy to see that they have worked to make music that is immediately recognizable. The singing is melodic, in the mid-to-upper register, without venturing a lot into the air raid siren territory. There is a strength to the voice, a certain control to it, that makes it easy and comfortable for the listener. Overall, a fun, cool debut album. Recommendation: Begin with the third song “Walking in Shadows,” as it shows the voice, the guitar melodies, and the rhythm section in such a good light (in addition, the band’s lyrics are at their best on a song like this, where ominous love comes across very well), although the entire album is good to go, and perhaps the first song is not the most representative of their classic-rock heavy metal sound. FYI, there seems to be some profanity on the songs, so you’ll need to decide about that matter.

Rosth - black metal from Germany

Rosth
Winter
May 23rd, 2021
The black metal band Rosth (Germany) is G.D. on guitars and vocals, and J.Z. on drums, with guest B.F. on bass. The album was mixed and mastered in 2021, but apparently it was recorded more than a decade ago in 2009. This does not seem to be a full band now, but perhaps they used to be. Anyway, the album immediately shows a higher level of sound quality than DIY black metal. It is eight songs in 34 minutes. The vocals are a deeper type of black metal growling, and not so much the shrieked type. The guitar work is traditional black metal of uptempo and fast riffing while retaining the melodies. The overall strength of the songwriting, performances and quality of sound make the album worthy of investigating and of giving it a real chance to see if the listener can hear skill involved. It does not sound like a DIY recording or demo or anything like that, and that is obvious from the first seconds when the music begins. The instrumentation is also clear, and the bass guitar is very audible and it’s easy to follow what it is doing, while the drum sound is also rather upfront. A surprising album!

Marble Tomb - Christian black metal from the U.S.

Christian black metal Marble Tomb (U.S.) solo project so far has two singles in 2021: "No Horizon" and "Our Sacred Sleep." This is classic-style fast black metal, including the vocals. Fast, melodic and necro, Marble Tomb offers memorable songs perfect for when the listener wants black metal that hits instantly. Marble Tomb's lyrics make it clear that it is music against what they consider lies and deceit, and in favor of a spiritual awakening. This is a solo project with programmed drums, so the sound is DIY.

out this week: Eldritch - veteran prog power name returns

The arrival of a new album by Eldritch is always a good reason to smile, for audiences supportive of the melodic singing and the melodic-progressive style of the Italian group. Sporting a huge back catalogue in 20 years of activity, quality is what is on the agenda for 2021. The new work continues their musical ambition of making a progressive metal music that is very understandable to anyone willing to give the band a real chance. Filled with melodies, catchy choruses, and offering a blend of various musical traditions and styles, it's not something that everyone might notice but Eldritch is the type of place in which classic rock and thrash meet up with recurring frequency, and where 1980s melodic heavy metal runs into contemporary and modern progressive metal, and where pop sensibilities find themselves next to some chuggy, groovy heaviness (maybe don't call djenty so that nobody gets offended?!), and wondering how it is that they all ended up in the same place. Well, so, how they did they all end up at the same location in the fall of 2021? The answer is Eldritch.
So far there are two songs available for listening from the album. They are included here below.

out now: Rhine -- maverick metal getting refined

Rhine has been creating a reputation here in the state of Washington for years now. On the third album, there is an interesting new thing going on with their contemporary extreme prog sound. The music seems easier to understand and just generally friendly (friendlier!) to the ear. It's good to hear the music take a turn for the better in terms of being intelligible to those of us who are not musicians. This album is still very much extreme progressive metal with extreme vocals (with some melodic vocals, too) and some challenging parts, but listeners won't feel super overwhelmed with the musical twists and turns. There is a smoother flow and more melodic feel to it. That's good news for you and me, right?!

Signum Draconis

Fans with some time to spare and an interest in concept albums may find their match in this 96-minute work inspired by Dante's The Divine Comedy. The album fits right in with other metal operas in the prog power category. Dramatic and theatrical, ambitious and expansive, Signum Draconis aims to please the fans of the grandiose. Of course, this is not a get-to-the-point albums but rather a take-scenic-route-stop-and-smell-the-flowers type of work that requires tons of patience and promises to reward the listener looking for something seeking to put literature to music.
