interview: Sacred Leather

The traditional heavy metal band Sacred Leather from the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S. has been campaigning for classic heavy metal to anyone that will listen. Their new album is called Ultimate Force. Check it, this is Sacred Leather, holy denim, sacred leather, heavy metal forever.
Good work on the album Ultimate Force! Who is answering this interview?
Cheers, Dee Wrathchild (vocals) here!
The metal fans today love their metal with growling and screaming. Who had the wild and crazy idea of having a real singer?
Sacred Leather started with a sound that definitely leaned more on the extreme side in the early days. I came into the lineup at a later date. SL always wanted to play traditional HEAVY METAL, with each song progressively migrating back to the roots of the classic sound. Magnus (bass) was probably the dude who made the call to demote former vocalist/lead guitarist (the Devil’s Hellion) to solely handle guitar duties. I don’t know that it was crazy having clean vocals over the material, it made all the sense in the world to us when shaping out a sound which was executed within the template of our HEAVY METAL forefathers.
How did the band find you?!
We were all aware of one another. Indianapolis is a tightknit city, so we all had mutual friends and acquaintances within the metal community. At the time I was asked to sing for Sacred Leather, they had been scoping me out as I performed with a classic metal cover band here in town. They played me the tunes, shit was rocking, and here we are. Now we are all brothers.
Can you tell us about your rhythm section?
Magnus (bass/co-founder) breathes HEAVY METAL as does every member in this band. It is a requirement to playing with us. We aren’t smoke and mirrors, this sound and lifestyle is who we are. Nobody is putting on a front and then going home and spinning some soft dick hipster shit.
Jailhouse (drums) left Sacred Leather after tracking Ultimate Force. Though the youngest member we have had, Jailhouse played as though he was delivered to us in a time capsule sent straight from 79. Our new drummer, Don Diamond, will bring a different energy into this band. Don is a seasoned punisher of the skins. Expect more flash, more sex, and more speed on upcoming Sacred Leather releases.
How did your bassist decide to take on the instrument and stay with it? When are you going to let him do a bass solo like Michael Anthony used to do in those old Van Halen concert videos drinking whiskey?!
Each member of Sacred Leather started off on the drums. I would think that Magnus had a smooth transition onto the bass, being a percussive minded player. Magnus could break out some flash in the future, however he seems much more concerned with playing whatever best services the song. Fret not over his whiskey supply; it’s been flowing strong since I’ve met him.
Did your drummer have the best parents ever? Don’t they have to be, in order to put up with a kid banging on the drums in the house?
Never met either Jailhouse or Don Diamond’s parents, however they raised some strapping gentlemen who know how to play some fucking drums.
How many guitarists do you have as permanent members? What is your secret recipe for guitar?
We have two guitarists, JJ Highway (lead guitar) and Carloff Blitz (lead guitar). JJ writes much of the material. Magnus contributes to this also.
I wish there were secrets to give you, all I know is they bust their ass and the result is some of the best written HEAVY METAL coming out right now.
How did you discover that you could sing? Were you listening to a Scorpions or Judas Priest album and singing along and thought: Hey, I think I might be able to do this!
Pretty much exactly like that. I was in a van with a band that I drummed for at the time, some classic shit came on the radio and I sang along **record scratch** Everybody turned and looked at me like, “fuck man, we didn’t know you could do that.” Likewise, neither did I! Fast forward, tireless hours and reps of me working on refining my voice and range up to the performance you hear on Ultimate Force.
Could I learn to sing, too? I mean, I sound pretty awful!
Sure, go ahead and sing. Being awful has never stopped certain vocalists in the past, haha.
Your entire album is available for listening at Bandcamp! Can you tell us about the various formats that are available?
Yup, it’s available on Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes, bigcartel.com/sacredleatherofficial, Cruz Del Sur Music, etc.
What merch do you have?
Ultimate Force on all formats: cassette, vinyl, digital, cd. Additionally, we have shirts and some other odd-end merch, most of which you can find at: bigcartel.com/sacredleatherofficial
What is next for Sacred Leather?
We have some upcoming gigs in our area in addition to fielding some other offers in gigs both in the Midwest and afar. Follow us on social media to stay in the loop on any future shows.
Are the Europeans liking your new work?
Oh yea, most of the heat we have felt off of Ultimate Force has come from Europe. This is extremely flattering because they have generated the best HEAVY METAL ever written. We definitely plan to trek across the pond and rock their asses off in the near future.
From Ultimate Force you have made a video for the song “Power Thrust”. Are there more videos that you will be making? Oh yea, always planning videos. Subscribe to us on YouTube so you see them when they drop!
Thank you for your time!
Cheers!

Blood and Thunder returned to the stage in Everett on April 20th, 2018.

Blood and Thunder closed the night of metal music at Obscurus in Everett on April 20th, 2018. What a show it was! The band's energy and joy of being on the stage completely convinced the people present. This band has some interesting news coming up because they are working on things, the wheels are rolling for the next phase of the band. The band came ready to rock and the crowd was ready for it! Then, it happened. The crowd went bananas when the swords were distributed and many people starting banging their heads and fighting each other with their swords and it looked a bunch of pirates in the crowd fighting each other. In addition, the monkeys were flying. Some people had monkeys on their backs, others were doing duels and others were trying mosh while the monkey, birds (or airplanes?), swords and balloons were flying around.
It is possible that many people were injured. All that sword fighting is bound to lead to someone getting injured. After all, plastic balloon swords are serious business.
A good time was had by all. Don't sleep on Blood and Thunder. They are working on something. You'll know soon enough.
Here is some visual evidence of what happened.
The story of Blood and Thunder is that when times get tough, you must get tougher and carry on. The band began some ten years ago, but as people’s lives and goals have changed, personnel changes have had to take place. How many times has the band’s mastermind Ryan Yancey has had to reboot this little Frankenstein? Only he knows and it is probably too many to count. However, it is 2018 and Blood and Thunder continues to bring its symphonic, melodic extreme metal live to the audiences in the state of Washington. This spring and summer of 2018 are looking like Blood and Thunder will making the rounds to the venues that host metal bands. Go to Bandcamp to check out their brand of European-style, shredding melodic death metal.

Dilapidation went to Everett to play the music of the doom on April 20th

If you are a false you will run yourself away from the death metal doom heaviness of the Washington state sensei named Dilapidation, but if you are a true you will entry to the fogged up world of Dilapidation. The music is a simple, even minimalistically savage hunger to go to brutal death metal from the abyss of doom passages. The vocalist declares that he wants to sound as if he were growling from a hole. The crowd ate up this metal of Dilapidation. We should mention that when you go to a Dilapidation show you will not see the band as much as you will feel and hear the band because they make a very heavy use of the fog machine and it is surprising they do not trip over their own equipment and they can play their instruments because no one can see them on stage. You will see silhouettes or shadows but in your flesh and bones you will feel the heaviness and brutality.
We are a stubborn. We took pictures anyway. The first picture is actually illegal because the band does not want such pictures to get published. Don't tell them about it. The other three pictures are examples of how fogged up this is. Good luck seeing anything. Regardless, the band did well and the audience loved it. More Dilapidation is the order of the day.
The live show of hearing this death doom band is a pretty heavy experience, with the massive, slower segments of death metal and growling, and then the speed picks up to headbanging paces, and they certainly have their own way of changing the rhythms of their death doom, avoiding monotony. If you are a fan of death metal and of doom metal, but perhaps you are not a fan of those doom bands that write 60-minute-plus single-song compositions of super slow sloth monoliths or maybe you get a bit bored with nothing-but-blasting death metal monotonous albums, then Dilapidation might hit the right spot for you, the place where death and doom live side by side, taking turns at the wheel of fortune sounds hosted the always-winning, always-undefeated champion that is death.
They have a bunch of demos as you can see below and they have them on Bandcamp. Actually, there they also have their full-length debut album and it is called Transcending the Void, which is almost an hour of music. The album features a band that cares about having its music sound like real people playing extreme metal, not computer software robotic products. Don’t go by the stereotype of the slow doom bands, Dilapidation does doom alright, but they will give you a rude awakening, jolts, of intense, fast metal, too. Let’s put it this way: there are people in Washington state, in Seattle, that go to watch certain bands and they stand around hiding in their hoodies looking at their feet, or their phones, passing out, falling as asleep like a bunch of weirdos meditating, but those people are probably not attending a Dilapidation show because this band is proud to be metal for banging your head, and it’s going to be heavy, and it’s going to be fast and brutal, too.

Violent Hallucinations brought death metal to Everett on April 20th

Violent Hallucinations is traditional, headbanging, take-no-prisoners death metal and they showed up in Everett and hit the ground running with track after track of sickness and perversion. They are rude, brewed, crude, lewd, tattooed, old schooled and by the devil chewed in the arts of the socially unacceptable and morally reprehensible music, and the children and youth present loved every minute of the introduction to a future life of crime, jail and social marginalization by way of blasting, shredding, growling extreme metal. The band did good of job of representing itself as dedicated to the craft of death metal and the perversion of young minds. The drummer is a beast, the growler guitarist a headbanging maniac, the bassist is busy at work on those strings and then there's Mason. We are not sure, but it appears that that is what they call it. Mason is a guitar lunatic and the whole band knows that. The band blames everything on Mason. Mason has led them down this path in life and now they cannot escape and nor do they want to leave. Mason has them under its evil spells of the immortal rites inside the chapel of ghouls. Fun times. Here are photos taken with a potato.
I am totally new to this Washington state band. This is a band, in my imagination, that formed on a bright and sunny summer day in the city of Tacoma, far away from Steve Miller and Phoenix, Arizona, and when all the sun-deprived Washingtonians were out horsing around near power lines and throwing the frisbees near the train tracks, the boys from Violent Hallucinations had other ideas and decided to stay at home and continue watching horror movies and listening to brutal death metal in order to pile up more disgusting sickness to their vision of, you guessed it, brutal death metal.
In reality, I know nothing about the band because it seems that no one from the band’s circle of friends and enemies has entered the band’s name in Metal Archives. The band needs you to write their name into the pages of immortality by way of Metal Archives, friend. Help this Washington state metal band, do it or you will end up living in van down by the river, kids!
I am able to tell you a little bit about them. First, expect a hammering barrage of brutality. Second, the band wants you to bang your head, mosh with your friends or otherwise engage in some form of violent friendly fun with your friends and family, or with random strangers that you meet at one of their shows. The third thing to know about the band is that they have one goal is life and that is “to reign supreme in the dark world of brutal death metal,” which is a lofty objective in life, indeed. Finally, you should know that they have songs on ReverbNation and they blast and growl about topics that would make you blush, so I won’t tell you about it now because you can check it out for yourself, you sicko.

Odyssian played in Everett on April 20th

We had the opportunity to catch Odyssian live for the first time when they played at Obscurus in Everett. They had a crowd banging their heads, nodding along, raising their fists, clapping and raising the horns in approval of the band's delivery of their intense and somewhat left-field extreme metal. Obscurus is such a great venue to watch heavy metal music very up close and with the volume right at your ears. In this case Odyssian put in a serious effort and people appreciated it, and the growler went as far as jumping into the crowd and pushed, shoved and slammed people in the front and still managed to jump back on stage in time for the continuation of the growling. It was cool to hear the band live for the first time. Their extreme metal takes a lot from death metal, including technical, melodic and progressive strands, and results in a good-for-headbanging, loud live experience. Here and there, they spice up the music and you might hear just a bit slap bass or a bit of the technicality stands out within the general loudness of it all. Here are some pictures taken with a potato for a camera.
Odyssian’s name has been showing up in this publication’s concert calendar for some time now. It looks like they are not yet on Metal Archives, but they already have a history on Bandcamp. They did two demos in 2015, but their best work so far is called Olde and it is their full-length debut album from 2017. The music is melodic extreme metal with progressive and melodic death metal functioning as a general framework for the sound. They have the blasting and intense moments, and they also make sure to keep the melodic guitar components present throughout. One thing to note, though, is that they do like to have variety in their sound. The songs, while sharing some general stylistic underpinnings, carry forth different moods that you sense while listening to the eight songs of the album. Of course, this variety is no accident, given that the band prides itself in changing things up with the music that they write.

Blood and Thunder will play in Everett, WA on April 20th

PR 20 Blood and Thunder / Dilapidation / Violent Hallucinations / Odyssian
at Obscurus 2622 center road, Everett, Washington 98204
facebook.com/events/120256901995121/

Odyssian will play in Everett, WA on April 20th

Dilapidation
Let’s put it this way: there are people in Washington state, in Seattle, that go to watch certain bands and they stand around hiding in their hoodies looking at their feet, or their phones, passing out, falling as asleep like a bunch of weirdos meditating, but those people are probably not attending a Dilapidation show because this band is proud to be metal for banging your head, and it’s going to be heavy, and it’s going to be fast and brutal, too.

avant-garde black metal band Noceur played in Everett, WA on April 14th, 2018

The avant-garde black metal band Noceur from the state of Washington showed those in attendance how they go about their music. Though young in age, the band is hungry to push their limits and see how far they can take their black metal aesthetics on the path of the Noceur sounds. They have the energy and the willingness to bring to life what they hear in their heads. Check them out if you are up for black metal of the twisted kind.
Here are some photos of the band in Everett.
Noceur is experimental black metal from Bellingham, Washington state. In the recent period they have been rocking the western side of Washington up and down the line. If you want to catch the chaos and you live in western Washington, you probably already had several chances. If you have not seen them, then there is a good possibility they will be near you again. The music can go from black metal to the outer edges of the genre and then some. At times the music sounds intelligible and for banging your head, and at other times it seems like only the mystic nihilistic elders of the industrial forests of green and grey of the mountains of the city valley countryside matrix might have the secrets of Noceur. You can rock out, you can be confused, but it’s ok because Noceur is here to make sense of it all. Maybe.
