out now now: Eternal Champion -- classic-style heavy metal

Eternal Champion
Ravening Iron
No Remorse Records/Sword Worship
20.11.2020
Eternal Champion is legacy-style heavy metal that is all about swords, hammers, armor, bravery, strength, battle and stories of war. The band has studied the work of the old teachers, and these Texans have the skills to write good songs in the style, and they have the singer that can carry these tunes. Fans of singing, big legacy-style riffs, and big heroic melodies will find that the album has lots to offer to them. The band has earned a very good reputation with the fans that keep up with "true metal" and this new album will convince more people that this band is the real deal. It remains to be seen how far they can go with the U.S. fans, but the European fans already seem to be onboard. All signs point to them rising a lot higher in the future. This second album is a good step in that direction. "Eternal Champion Eternal Champion living on the road, When we're in town speakers explode, We don't attract wimps cause we're too loud, Just true metal people that's Eternal Champion's crowd."

Subterraen -- the French misery has arrived

Friend of woe,
The grime, droning sludge, the putrid slime is now here. What a day for the neverending longers of the slow poke heaviness of sludge, as this trio brings home a brand new bag (their debut, actually, according to Metal Archives) of miserably despairing excursions. Oh, it's enough to go toe to toe with the best shoegazing doom that 2020 has had to offer. For a debut?! Yikes, this is no joke, friend! The vocals is a shrieking gremlin witch screaming trapped in a cave far away behind the mountain over the horizon, and the distortion is that dangerous volume that seeks to shake the walls when you pump up the volume. The total love-it-all collector of sludge doom should at least listen to one song from this album that is now available on Bandcamp. What would the sludge lovers say? Would they take it like fish to water? Is it possible that the sludge lovers are getting a little tired of the constant sludge coming from all over the world? Well, if so, those fans better reach for some coffee because they're going to need to stay awake for a new contender named Subterraen. They're French and miserable. You're going to love them! Check the official propaganda from Transcending Obscurity Records below. --Metal Bulletin Zine

4.Wrath Of A Downtrodden Planet 18:21
French sludge/doom metal band Subterraen carry the torch of the style on the label, following the ponderous steps of the giants Eremit and Jupiterian. In comparison however, they add their own blackened grit and weighed down heaviness to the proceedings, crafting 10+ minute songs narrating epic, anguish-ridden tales of the slow destruction of the planet and sowing seeds of the inexorable vengeance of mother nature. The emotions are palpable not only in the harrowing cries of the vocalist but also from the palpitating, heaving music that functions as the body of this ancient beast. There is an honest rawness to it all and a dank, earthly vibe that resonates with the sandalwood fragrance emanating from the physical products, with a wooden, coffin-shaped box to go with it. From ashes to ashes, from dust to dust. For fans of - Eremit, Jupiterian, Lurk, Eyehategod, Neurosis, 71TonMan, Conan, Primitive Man

This is the information from Scarlet Records: Growing up all together and listening to the most famous melodic hard rock and heavy metal bands of the 80’s, the five musicians of this uprising Swedish band managed to revitalize the genre with their 2016 debut album ‘Garden of Eden’. Sole Syndicate’s style can be described as classic hard’n’heavy with strong and catchy melodies (pop and country music are part of the foundation of their songwriting too). Their lyrics deal with everything from the state of the world address, politically and environmentally, to the most traditional “rock poetry”. The title of the exciting new album is a reference to what´s happening right now with the ongoing pandemic, rising crime and political instability. Overall, ‘Last days of Eden’ is a brilliant collection of charming hooks, superb vocals and sparkling guitar-solos!

out this weekend: Witchwood -- legacy-style 1970s progressive heavy rock

The music of Witchwood (Italy) takes the listener back in time to the 1970s. Maybe they will remind some listeners of the spirit of Deep Purple, and Uriah Heep and perhaps some U.S. Southern rock. The good quality of the music and of the recording itself stands out immediately. The most important thing to know for people that are new to this band is the album's high quality, and it is a very seriously put together work to which fans of 1970s heavy rock should give consideration. The album has a lot offer and it takes time to unpack it all, but it is a very entertaining listen. Given that readers here in the U.S. may not know too much about the band, read the official information below from Jolly Roger Records. It will help to understand why this band is so good at their craft of vintage proto-metal, doom, prog rock, blues rock, hard rock, classic rock or whatever other categories it is that fans like to use to describe Witchwood. --Metal Bulletin Zine.

This is the official informaiton from Jolly Rogers Records: Jolly Roger Records is proud to present Witchwood's highly anticipated third album, Before the Winter, on November 20th worldwide. The album will be available on CD, double-vinyl with gatefold cover and one bonus track, and digital formats. Vinyl colors will be 100 copies on silver wax (exclusive JRR), 100 on mustard wax (exclusive Kozmik Artifactz), and 100 on yellow (exclusive Fu.zu.l. Records).
In 2014, from the ashes of the Buttered Bacon Biscuits, Witchwood were born. Buttered Bacon Biscuits released a self-produced CD in 2010, titled From the Solitary Woods (available on CD and LP from Jolly Roger in 2017), and positively reviewed by many Italian and foreign music magazines and websites. They played many gigs around Italy, also supporting important bands like Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, and Bud Spencer Blues Explosion among others.
After the split, some members of the band - Ricky, Andy, Steve, and Sam - decided, with the entry of new member Luca Celotti on bass, to start Witchwood. All musicians have been active for decades, with past recording experience with local bands and collaborations with artists like Martin Grice (Delirium) and Nik Turner (Hawkwind). Their debut album as Witchwood, Litanies From the Woods, featured ten tracks in a well-balanced mix of hard rock, progressive, psych, and southern rock with an obscure and vintage '70s attitude. Released in 2015, this debut album got a very excellent acceptance from public and press, both in and outside Italy, which allowed a strong promotional push - playing live at Hammer of Doom in Germany, Malta Doom Metal Fest in Malta, and as guest for The Vintage Caravan in Germany - and a deserved good visibility on all main specialized webzines and magazines. Both CD and LP first runs quickly sold out.
Rightly, Witchwood were considered one of the best bands from the new "retro-rock" wave. One year later, they came back with a new recording, Handful of Stars, featuring three unreleased songs and two covers - "Flaming Telepath" from Blue Öyster Cult and "Rainbow Demon" from Uriah Heep, as a kind of homage and tribute to these two great bands, so important for Witchwood's musical journey - and an unreleased version of the suite "Handful Of Stars" (from Litanies From the Woods) with a new breathless intro, for a total of 45 minutes of music.
"Handful of Stars represents a band’s hypothetical cycle, as it contains also music based on ideas developed during the recording sessions of Litanies From the Woods but left behind because that album was already almost 80 minutes length," said Ricky Dal Pane. "There are three unreleased songs and a tribute to two of our favorite bands of all time - ‘Flaming Telepaths’ from Blue Öyster Cult and ‘Rainbow Demon’ from Uriah Heep. We also added an extended version of the song ‘Handful Of Stars.’ This is a very well-curated album, and it’s full of interesting material. It’s not just a filler between two full-length albums, as its length is 45 minutes. We are very happy about it, and we hope our fans won’t be disappointed."
Handful of Stars was also the right way to celebrate the appreciation received for the debut album and to introduce the new guitar player Antonino Stella, noteworthy session man and Ricky's longtime friend. During the last four years, Witchwood played live and collected all the energies and inspirations to release the new, best-possible album entitled Before the Winter. A long time, but worth the wait!
current lineup: Riccardo "Ricky" Dal Pane - vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin; Andrea "Andy" Palli - drums; Stefano "Steve" Olivi - Hammond, piano, synth & Moog; Luca "Celo" Celotti - bass; Samuele "Sam" Tesori - flute & harmonica; Antonino "Woody" Stella - lead guitar.

Michael Sánchez (from Arizona, USA prog extremists Pain Patterns) has apparently taken it upon himself to do the drumm programming, vocals, guitars, and bass, and the recording process. King Ov Wyrms is blasting brutal death loaded with lots of black metal riffs and dual growl/shriek vocals, with a death/brutal production. Press "play" and watch this thing launch into linear relentless attacks of brutality over and over for the duration. It is almost totally nonstop blasting, energetic, superfast extremity only for the true love-it-all fanatics. They will notice that within the warp speed there are various shades of fast, faster, very fast, and blindingly fast. The whole purpose of this recording must be for Sánchez to paint himself into a very tight corner, and find small ways to make the songs squirm, twist and turn in attempts to differentiate one song from another. If you like to get freaky with basement solo projects of relentless speed, then grab these car keys right here and take it for a spin. The only thing that can be promised to all listeners is that things will go fast, will remain fast throughout for the majority of the time, with a few respites, and the intensity will remain.

out now: Houkago Grind Time: Bakyunsified (Moe to the Gore)

This is a grind solo project by Andrew Lee [Archaganini, Azath, Emphysematous Excretion of Gangrenous Debridement, Ripped to Shreds, Serpent Rider, Skullsmasher, Extremely Brutal (live), Spinebreaker (live), ex-Ghul, Chasing Elvin Jones, ex-Disincarnation]. The purpose of this grind is for you to scream and growl along or to play air guitar or air drum while growling like a possessed cartoon character, and doing it all as fast possible with all the blasting grind taking place. Don't let the word "gore" fool you, this is apparently all based on anime, and not gore, violence and horror. It is meant to be something different, as the official information reminds: "Bakyunsified (Moe to the Gore) is a love letter and a statement of devotion to Kyoto Animation's classic moe anime boom of the mid 2000s. Taking cues from K-On, a show full of friendship, growth, and positivity, Bakyunsified rejects the violence and hatred pervading the current state of the world, eschewing the genre conventions of blood, guts, and porn." out now: Lizzy Borden: Best of Lizzy Borden, Vol. 2

Lizzy Borden is for fans of catchy legacy heavy metal with lots of vocal melodies. Since the 1985 debut album Love You to Pieces, the band has been known for lots of melodies on the guitar and especially in the singing. Named after the case an infamous accused axe murdereress, Lizzy Borden is a bit like a classic-style 1980s heavy metal version of Alice Coooper: super catchy songs about creepy topics! In the 1980s there were fans really devoted to this band, and that devotion continues to this day. As you know, "Best of" compilations do not offer much to the old fans of any band but can be a good introduction to new fans, and that is certainly the case here. Young fans of melodic heavy metal that have never heard this music may discover a new gem band. --Metal Bulletin Zine

out this weekend: Putrid Offal: Live at Hellfest 2017

The dead will not stay dead and keep rising out of the grave no matter how long they were dead in the first place, like in the case of the old French bandits known as Putrid Offal who were once as dead as it gets, and then in 2013 something possessed them to bring back the gore death metal grind, and here we are in 2020. They already had a studio album in 2020 called Sicknesses Obsessions. This recording right here is 28 minutes of the band blasting their way through a fun, quick set of simple grinding gore death and having the time of their lives. These old dudes have found themselves the right drummer to execute this type of material, and they know how to get their point across. If you like fast, simple death metal, then how about some fast, simple death by the alive-again Putrid Offal going bonkers at Hellfest? If you want gore, you've got it. --Metal Bulletin Zine

out this weekend: Ecclesia: De Ecclesiæ Universalis

This album stands out immediately. Ecclesia is doom, let's say along lines that are more traditional, a lot more more heavy metal, a lot more metal. The music by itself will make you move a lot more than a lot of doom bands, actually. There is definitely headbanging metal here, as this is not shoe gazing slow music. They might be too metal for some doom fans that prefer yoga doom, but if you want a more active form of doom, then this album may be such a pleasant, really pleasant surprise. Good musicianship, and good songs and all. Then, just you wait until hear this singer! This individual has a very nice, a very nice indeed, pair of lungs. It's a real singer, for a change, not just some person doing their best with their limited skills (not that we don't appreciate that, either!), but this singer is on another level. Lots of doom has pretty ok or average vocalists. This is different. If you want a more energetic style of doom, and you have been waiting to find you a new doom band with a vocalist that sings for real, then don't miss out on this one. You won't regret it, that's for sure. --Metal Bulletin Zine

out this weekend: Harlott: Detritus of the Final Age

The Australian band returns with another installment of classic-style thrash. Fans of the genre should be very pleased with the band's belief in mosh pit thrash as their sound. Lots of headbanging metal to be had here, lots of shredding and fast-finger string action, without forgetting to inject a bit of melody in places. In addition, the band explores some longer songs to extend their sound, and in some places they use the slow-burner midtempo segments as a contrast to all the thrashing going on. The listener will see that the band remains committed to the sound of legacy thrash, whether we are talking about the 1980s or today, and listeners will notice the effort by the band to avoid being complacent by spicing up the pace of the album. The band has worked on a balanced approach to thrash and it shows. Of course, the musicianship is top notch, and the production is good. Fans of the bass guitar will like hearing the bass on this one, too. --Metal Bulletin Zine

After years of personal struggle in my music career, joining Only Human felt like all my hard work, energy and effort had come full circle. The band comprised of truly great artists and amazing people who pushed me to become better myself. In The Dismantling, I wrote and performed all the lyrics and vocals. It was a total joy to be part of Only Human and create an album I am most proud of. I'm so grateful for it all.
