Johansson & Speckmann features the death metal riff factory Rogga Johansson [Bloodgut, Dead Sun, Down Among the Dead Men, Echelon, Eye of Purgatory, Fondlecorpse, Furnace, Ghoulhouse, Grisly, Humanity Delete, Lobotomy Dept, Massacre, Megascavenger, Monstrous, Necrogod, Paganizer, PermaDeath, Pile of Skulls, Putrevore, Reek, Revolting, Ribspreader, Rogga Johansson, Severed Limbs, Stass, Svitjod, The Cleaner and Mr. Filth's Van Murders, The Dead Cold, The Skeletal, Those Who Bring the Torture, To Descend, ex-Carve, ex-Demiurg, ex-Eaten, ex-Foreboding, ex-Minotaur Head, ex-Skeletal Spectre, ex-Swarming, ex-Terminal Grip, ex-The Grotesquery, Troikadon, ex-Banished from Inferno, ex-Graveyard After Graveyard, ex-Sinners Burn, ex-Soulburn, ex-The 11th Hour, ex-Deranged (live), ex-Bone Gnawer, ex-To the Gallow]

The fifth album is old-school, blasting death metal, delivered with the intense simplicity that both cult figures are known for. This is blasting and uptempo. It is not 100% blast-attack death, but it certainly blasts a lot. Maybe in some of the guitar solos, people will detect a bit of melody, but other than that, this is headbanging death all the way. --Metal Bulletin Zine

Every Hour Kills
Contemporary melodic progsters Every Hour Kills are now streaming three of the four tracks from the October 9th, 2020 EP called Re:Awaken. The music is for fans of catchy, melodic prog with melodic singing (and a bit of screaming but not too much), and in this case the sound allows electronica-ish melodies and ear-friendly singing for a very poppy sound that takes djent-groove and injects it with a pop feel, and almost totally eliminates the extreme/screaming vocals. Every Hour Kills has a certain love for electronic music (Are there some dubstep bits in here?), prog, djent-groove and melodic guitar, and kind of finds a way to make it all work. The description of this music sounds rather awful, right? Kind of weird, no? Well, fear not, the music is remarkably accessible to the ears of normal rock and metal fans; EHK is making a serious effort to check their egos at the door, working to write comprehensible songs that people understand. These songs are way, way better than people imagine when they read the words "djent" or "groove" or "prog." Is this pop prog?! Maybe! --Metal Bulletin Zine

About: Every Hour Kills is a powerhouse ensemble featuring the core of ex-Divinity / Enditol guitarist Sacha Laskow, bassist Brent Stutsky (ex-Breach of Trust), along with vocalist Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster (ex-Out of Your Mouth). The new EP titled ‘Re:Awaken’ set for release on October 9, 2020, tells the stories of individuals existing in this fragmented future; their struggle to exist amidst the chaos of forces of the elite race and the constant encroaching tide of technology. An accompanying illustrated short storybook by Splice Comics will delve even deeper into the EHK lore. Every Hour Kills was built to challenge the idea of what defines a “band”. Rather, the group sees itself as a constantly evolving musical collective; guest vocalists and soloists across the songs bring their own unique artistry and elevate the collective impact of Every Hour Kills’ brand. The lyrics, artwork, visuals, and themes all look toward the future, asking the key postmodern question of how will emerging technology and our humanity progress and co-exist?

Furnace: another Rogga Johansson death metal project
Furnace features Rogga Johansson, a Swedish cult figure in many death projects, mostly old-school headbanging stuff. A simple search on Metal Archives shows that on any given year Rogga may release anywhere from three to seven or more albums. It is a very large discography, as if Rogga is determined to make a living from the sales of death metal recordings that come out under the names of dozens of projects at a relentless pace. So far he seems to have some 125 (you read that right!) recordings to his name and he is about 44 years of age. It is conceivable that he once set for himself the modest goal of 100 albums, but that now his secret goal is actually 1000 albums. Furnace has Rogga on guitars and vocals. It is death with, by Rogga standards, a relatively high amount of melody added to the brutal, gruff heaviness, but don’t get it confused: this is not “melodic death” nor “melodeath.” It is death metal with a bit of a more somber feel, some softer guitars added to the usual Rogga chugging. The album is still mainly for death metal fans, given that the growling is standard death (perhaps a bit too monotonous in that "safe" and "proper" burping growl that is common in death metal) and the guitar work is chugging heaviness with simplicity for quick impact. See the official propaganda below. [--Metal Bulletin Zine]

Dark Vistas
Soulseller Records
9 October 2020
Swedish Death Metal trio FURNACE will release concept album Dark Vistas October 9 on Soulseller Records. Dark Vistas is conceptual death metal in a melodic, thrashing and gothic setting. What if Paradise Lost, Deceased and any Swedish death metal band of choice came together for a full-on storytelling album? Well then you´d have FURNACE´s Dark Vistas. Comprised of members from Paganizer, Demiurg and Assassins Blade, as well as Cult of the Fox and Void Moon, this Swedish outfit explores a new melodic death metal vista of sorts. It’s still death metal, but it’s also much more. Delve deep into the Lovecraftian and cult-riddled mythos of FURNACE with Dark Vistas.

Radiant Knife is back again in 2020 with a second EP
Radiant Knife is about to make a landing with their second EP of 2020. Their previous release this year emerged from the quagmire with sludge-oriented tunes, but that's not what is cooking in the kitchen this time around. Now it is something a bit gentler, softer, bringing to the fore the other side of the grimy coin, and the other side is more pleasant and smooth, showing that these American roughnecks clean up pretty good when they want to git'r dun. It's like they are showing that they can get into a tuxedo, and we would have never known it if we had listened only to the first EP. Alright, then, live and learn. Live, learn and get in the truck, gamblers. If you get a kick out reading official propaganda hype, then check it below. [-Metal Bulletin Zine]
Born of the Lafayette, Louisiana heavy music scene, experimental duo Radiant Knife has been laying down their unique brand of riffage since 2016. With Greg Travasos on drums/percussion and Stephen Sheppert on guitar, vocals, and synth, the band creates a monstrous sonic landscape influenced by Mahavishnu Orchestra, Yes, Zeni Geva, Dazzling Killmen, Keelhaul, Loincloth, Today is the Day, and King Crimson. Radiant Knife is now preparing to release two separate albums later in 2020: The Body on August 28th, and The Ghost on October 9th.
Travasos and Sheppert began making music together four years ago, after meeting by playing shows with past bands. Sheppert played in Raedon Kong and Collapsar, while Travasos was a member of The Object at the End of History as well as the touring drummer for international act Brother Dege. Sheppert says of their artistic compatibility, "We both like doing something different and experimental so it just felt natural. Once we began jamming together we never looked back."
And indeed, it's been a fruitful collaboration. The duo released their debut s/t album in 2017 and quickly followed it with Science Fiction in 2018; both albums were met with accolades from Metal Injection, Invisible Oranges, and more. Liam Savage of Echoes and Dust said of Science Fiction, "I can’t get these songs out of my head after repeated listens. [...] I have a distinct feeling that this will be on many people’s year-end lists. It’s that good. It’s not overblown and fancy, and it sticks in your head. What an excellent album from start to finish."
Now on the eve of putting out not one but two albums, this band's future is looking, ahem, radiant. Sheppert explains how Radiant Knife's writing process led them to be releasing two albums in such a short time span:
"We typically have songs that can be lumped in two broad groups: one group being tech/riff-driven, heavy compositions and the other group being looser and more focused on letting the music breathe. In this go-around we just ended up with enough material to fulfill two releases.Lyrically speaking, The Ghost deals with a lot of spiritual themes (death of the physical body, afterlife beliefs, etc.) so the title seemed to fit pretty well. In contrast, The Body was a fitting title for the tech/heavy album. Although different, they are very much connected and I believe should be listened to one after the other to get the full picture of what Radiant Knife is about."

Kill The Bastards Inc. is a crossover extreme metal band, mixing styles such as black/death metal, prog and doom all into one song or each individual amazing moment of brutality. Kill The Bastards Inc. was formed by guitarist/bassist/vocalist Josh swift back in 2006. Originally a solo project named after a failed pestiside company ideah Josh just went ahead and took the name for himself and his band. First demo Still Born But Breathing took a look into the post apocolyptic side of blackmetal and drug use. Later in 2008 Josh reconected with long time friend and old drummer Michael Schubert and his brother Tyler Schubert on guitar and thus the reformed Kill the Bastards Inc. and what your hearing right now is the consequences of that union.

Helion Prime: power metallers' third album Question Everything (Oct. 5th)
It is accurate to say that U.S. power metal act Helion Prime has had its fair share of instability in the singing department during its six-year operations, with three former singers. Now in 2020 they return with their third full-length album Question Everything, and a new singer, none other than Mary Zimmer. Older fans in Madison, Wisconsin and elsewhere will remember Mary from the band The Ottoman Empire that later became Luna Mortis (Century Media Records). As the new album amply demonstrates, Mary is a capable singer, and a good addition to the band, assuming they achieve some line-up stability, and that Helion Prime does not turn into one of those entities has a different singer on every album. Nobody wants that, Yngwie! The new album is another clinic on contemporary melodic heavy metal. The guitar work is crisp with riffs, giving the people what the people want. Fans of melodic metal want good guitar work, good solos, and melodies. Check. The songs are as catchy as possible for power metal fans.
Below are four songs from the album. By the way, the last song on the album (not available below) is a cover of a Misfits song. Who knew that Helion Prime is not only good at power metal but also power metal punk rock! Below is the official propaganda. [Metal Bulletin Zine]

Question Everything
Saibot Reigns
5 October 2020
It’s been about two years since the band’s sophomore release “Terror of the Cybernetic Space Monster” and Sacramento sci-fi power metallers Helion Prime returns with their third effort and the much shorter title “Question Everything” set for release on Monday, October 5th, 2020 via their label Saibot Reigns. This is Helion Prime’s first album with new vocalist Mary Zimmer, who has also accompanied the band on two separate tours of the United States. It also sees the band’s original singer, Heather Michele, returning in a writing capacity and contributing all lyrics and melodies. Heather Michele also along with other former Helion Prime vocalist Sozos Michael and with John Yelland (Judicator/Dire Peril) add their guest vocals on the full length.
The highly anticipated third record is a concept album, with each song revolving around different figures throughout human history who had the courage to question the status quo of their respective worlds/societies, in some cases even dealing with harsh persecution as a result. Those Helion Prime chose to write about-faced prejudice, mockery, ex-communication, and persecution – yet through it all, they held true to their beliefs and ideas. Time would be their greatest ally as their ideas and identities were eventually validated, oftentimes not until after their passing. They serve as an inspiration for all minds to continue thinking outside the box and staying true to themselves.
Jason speaks on the album itself: “This album has truly been amazing to work on. The idea behind it is something I’ve been holding on to since around the time I started the band. Aside from writing some of what I consider to be Prime’s best work it was a great experience getting to work with Heather again on an album as she once again contributed her talents for the lyrics.”
“Question Everything” was mixed by Chris Collier and mastered by Brett Caldas-Lima with additional mixing/drum edits/reamping by Alex Nasla of Gear Gods Studio. Guitar/Bass edits by Michael Goodrich and cover art by Marc Whisnant. “Question Everything” is out worldwide on October 5th, 2020 via Saibot Reigns.

JesusWearsArmani (Washington state, U.S.A.)
JesusWearsArmani is a groove band.
ABOUT: “I wrote Pray For War when I was in a very dark place. It was early 2014 and I had just gotten out of the military. I was having a really hard time readjusting to civilian life. I wanted to go back to war. It was safe: I knew it. I had done it for 8 years. That feeling is something that almost any veteran, especially one who’s seen combat, can relate to. Switching between war and civilian life is really hard.” Rich Hurst, lyricist and lead singer of melodic heavy metal band Jesus Wears Armani, writes combat-tested metal. His songs address the physical and psychological scars of war: injury, alcoholism, addiction, PTSD, and the feelings of dislocation and alienation that are unfortunately all-too-common for our returning veterans. As Hurst sees it, the mission of the band is to use music to give voice to emotions and experiences his fellow soldiers might find too painful to express. Hurst is also committed to giving back in a material way to his fellow soldiers. Backing Hurst are musicians Casey Catts on guitar, Jared Conniele on drums, and Ricy Bjorklund on bass. Listeners have described Jesus Wears Armani’s sound as “Lamb of God meets Dethklok” (of the animated Adult Swim television show Metalocalypse). The band counts as its musical influences The Black Dahlia Murder, The Faceless, and DevilDriver. Jesus Wears Armani’s high energy stage show, featuring an original music setlist, a military theme and strobe lights, is heating up the Seattle heavy metal scene. They received honorable mention at the South Sound Underground Festival to directly benefit the Wounded Warrior Project at Louie G’s in March 2015. The band co-headlined the Hawaii Metalfest in August 2015 with Suicide Silence, and also received runner-up at Seattle’s Studio Seven’s 2015 KNOTFEST, opening for Slipknot/Judas Priest and Korn. They are headlining Wingfest at Louie G’s in December 2015, and will be touring the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Seattle, Vancouver and Everett) starting in early 2016.
Jesus Wears Armani’s music has also been getting airplay on internet radio stations like Earbits and Radio Riss. “Music is a way for us to reach out to other veterans. The things that they have gone through, we have also been through. It’s kind of like therapy. It expresses itself in our lyrics. No matter how hard life is, you are going to come out on top,” says Hurst. “Our song, To the Front, is about duty in the military - what soldiers go through to get ready to go into combat: ‘Back to the front, join the dead, write your letters home and tell your family everything will be alright.’” Hurst first formed Jesus Wears Armani when he was on active duty in Iraq in 2008, continued playing when he returned to Hawaii in 2010 and played even through another tour of duty in 2011-12 in Afghanistan. The band saw considerable success at their previous base of operations on Oahu, HI, where they were stationed. Regular performers at the two most popular metal venues on the island, The Station and Hawaiian Brian, they were invited to open for August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage and Cannibal Corpse in 2012-13. They were also fortunate enough to tour around the islands with Christian deathcore band Impending Doom. The band relocated from Hawaii to Seattle in 2013. Then, in March of 2014, they performed at the SXSW Heart of Texas Rockfest showcase to critical acclaim. Hurst is a wounded warrior himself - he had a rocket explode behind his head. He knows physical scars are not the only legacy many veterans suffer from, and the song “Whatever Vices May Come” is a reflection of the many emotions he has dealt with both in the field of war and after coming home to civilian life. Having overcome problems with alcohol and addiction which almost cost him his military career, Hurst’s goal is to help others express and fight the same self-destructive forces. Hurst and the band are working on their second CD, Pray For War, projected to release in 2017. Their first EP, Curse of Man (2012), can be heard on ReverbNation.

defunct black metallers Ceremonial Castings announce re-recording of 2008 album Salem 1692
Below is the statement by Ceremonial Castings posted on Facebook. Below you will also find the old version of the album that someone has posted on YouTube.
Although we were once thought to be swallowed by the aeons of time, we now return from the abyss...
Eisenwald is proud to present a special re-recording of CEREMONIAL CASTINGS’ lost classic Salem 1692 on CD and cassette in late November, and vinyl LP format due out in early next year.
Listen to 'Damned Be Those of the Craft' now on our official Youtube channel:
Pre-save the song for streaming platforms, available October 9th: https://ffm.to/damnedbethoseofthecraft
Formed in that fateful year of 1996, CEREMONIAL CASTINGS were a band of the times, a band later behind the times, and now a band ahead of the times once again. Many will belatedly be aware of the name CEREMONIAL CASTINGS due to the membership of future UADA founder Jake Superchi, alongside his brother Nick Superchi, who were later (and once again now) joined by drummer Matt Mattern. The band crafted a canon of symphonic black metal that was admirably ambitious and often brilliant but all too often overlooked. Until their eventual demise in 2014, CEREMONIAL CASTINGS created nine full-lengths and just as many demos/Eps that were all released on their own label. Their album covers were often graced with artwork courtesy of the masterful Kris Verwimp, who also created the band’s logo.
Of these, it's arguably 2008’s Salem 1692 which is the most beloved of all CEREMONIAL CASTINGS recordings and the one which is most emblematic of the band’s “Bewitching Black Metal.” By this point, the band’s albums were easily topping an hour-plus in length, as their songwriting had become more ambitious as well as their lyrical themes in kind. Salem 1692 is distinct in this regard in that the lyrical theme directly ties into the Superchi brothers’ family history. As Jake explains, “Since the beginning of this band in 1996, this was the album we always wanted to make, as we have a deep tie to the events in Salem of 1692. Growing up just west of Salem, my brother Nick and I learned all about the events at a very young age, including that we are in fact direct descendants – however many great grandsons – of Judge John Hathorne, who had sentenced the witches to hang. It is said that one of the girls who was hung had cast a curse on our family's bloodline.”
While it is still unclear whether CEREMONIAL CASTINGS have officially returned from the grave, this new re-recording of Salem 1692 sounds exceptionally fresh, richly detailed, and fully conveys the mysticism so crucial to their aesthetic. It’s as immersive as ever, if not more so due to the richly kaleidoscopic sound – organic, analog, but not once sacrificing any of the otherworldliness which endeared CEREMONIAL CASTINGS to so many. And now, in 2020, as more ancient and classicist styles of black metal take hold with a new generation, “symphonic black metal” need no longer be a dirty word: this re-recording of Salem 1692 is poignant proof of the subgenre’s inherent power to transport the listener to forgotten realms and dimensions far, far away from modernity.
“This is a record that holds a lot of mystical energy showcased within its eleven hymns as they seamlessly weave and flow together as one harmonious entity,” explains VEILED founder and UADA bassist Nate Verschoor. “Taking into consideration the concept of the album, it’s as if the songs themselves were twisted into form to act as spells and incantations. I say this because the moment the album begins, a presence is immediately felt, and the journey into a time long ago begins to take shape.”
"With the turn of a new decade," concludes Jake, "we who would be sentenced to hang by our own ancestor, felt that not only did this represent our craft best to reintroduce ourselves, but we also would like to remind the world in 2020 of where a witch-hunt can and will lead if not careful with unwise accusations. We are here to show that American black metal does have a history that is tied to a very dark and cruel past. We are here to turn the focus around upon those who would condemn us for who and what we are. This album is for all who still believe in the old ways and who understand the true nature of magick. Together, let us reverse the curse."
