Biography: Katabätika is a project that began in 2008 by the hand of Dani Domingo on bass and Dave on drums, with the idea of creating a band of Dark Metal inspired by bands like Crematory, Paradise Lost, Type O Negative and others. Soon he joined Albert Palop project on guitars, creating the core group. Martí capellas on keyboards and Iker Zamarripa on vocals They bind to the formation. Due to personal reasons Dave and Iker have to leave the band and was replaced by Carlos Vidal on drums and vocals Dani Domingo responsible along with the bass. After several changes of formation and collaborations by Nati (Swarm) is incorporated to Daniel (Ravenblood) band, musical motifs Daniel has to leave the band. After a long search to find singer Tania finally enters the band, consolidating training, such training was the one that had more filming live. The band has done some work unfinished recording, but has shared the stage with Drakum, Human Carnage, Ravenblood, Display, Kauterion or The Bleeding Sun, walking the halls and festivals of the metal underground scene of Barcelona and surroundings.

Fifth Angel live footage
Fifth Angel has shared a song from the live appearance in Seattle this past weekend: "In the Fallout." Next they will travel to Germany for Keep it True festival. Check it out!
Fifth Angel - "Fallout" 4/22/17 El Corazon, Seattle
Seattle traditional and melodic metal band Fifth Angel played in Seattle this past April 22, 2017 before heading out to Germany to play at Keep it True. The current members of the band are: Ed Archer - guitars; Ken Mary - drums; John Macko - bass; Kendall Bechtel - guitars; Peter Orullian - vocals. The band has posted that the former singer on the albums from the 1980s, Ted Pilot, attended this reformation show. The new vocalist, Peter Orullian, is a former member of Heir Apparent, the Seattle progressive metal band.
It is worth noting that Fifth Angel reformed back in 2010 for Keep It True, with Orullian on vocals. For the record, all four current instrumentalists in the band appear to be the same personnel as found on the band's last studio album from 1989, Time Will Tell.
The band is known for its two quality albums of highly memorable traditional and melodic heavy metal: Fifth Angel in 1986 and Time Will Tell in 1989. After the latter album, Metal Archives shows that there is no more official recorded output.
If you have never heard of Fifth Angel, go their Facebook page and see some of the videos that they have posted there, including studio songs from the above albums. The band has been active on Facebook recently.
OFFICIAL: Back in the glory days of traditional metal in the 1980's, with the likes of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, The Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Ronnie James Dio, Led Zeppelin and many others as an influence... Ed Archer, Ted Pilot and James Byrd had a vision. This vision was to blend their various musical influences and backgrounds together to form a new version of traditional metal. Thus, the inception of the band "Fifth Angel". Ken Mary was brought on board on drums, and would later move on to much success playing in bands such as House Of Lords, Bad Moon Rising, and Alice Cooper, to name but a few.
From their beginnings in 1984 in Bellevue Washington (near Seattle), Fifth Angel sought to create a musical landscape of their own to express ideas, thoughts, opinions and emotions in the most eloquent form, in the form of music and story-telling through lyrics. Fifth Angel recorded a demo with the now famed Terry Date at the mixing desk and was first signed to independent label Shrapnel Records, which opened the door to an international following and a very positive acceptance of their vision. John Macko was brought on board to become the permanent bass player around this time.
Through fate and happenstance, the band caught the ear of Derek Simon with Concrete Marketing and Management in New York, NY. This again opened new doors for the band leading to offers from various major labels including Atlantic, Elektra and Epic, the latter being the label which seemed the best fit. Epic Records re-released the original "Fifth Angel" album, giving it new life with re-mastering and cover art and the band began the journey of composing new material for a second album, to be the debut for the Epic label. This was also a time of change for the band as Kendall Bechtel became the new lead guitar player.
"Time Will Tell" was recorded with Terry Brown producing, from Rush fame, and was released to a much wider world audience through Epic's far reaching distribution network, being met with much anticipated acceptance. The song "Midnight Love" was featured as the theme song for Howard Stern's cable television show for several years.
In a short period of time the collective musical landscape and listening audience of the world changed...Seattle became a Mecca for a new sound called "Grunge". Fifth Angel was caught in a grey area that many of the up-and-coming 1980's/90's metal bands were in...established enough to be known world-wide to a certain degree, but not established enough to be seen as a profitable investment by record companies when competing against the wildfire known as grunge. The realities of the "business side" of the music industry began to settle in and the writing was on the wall. Ed Archer decided it was time to leave and start a new path in life. Fifth Angel continued on, but as record companies faced the realities of the very profitable grunge music against their bottom line, Fifth Angel was released from their contract with Epic.
The band members went their separate ways, some intertwined with music, some not. Eventually, as fate would have it some of the core band members reconnected and decided it was time to re-visit music and the band became active again in 2010 with a successful reunion gig at the "Keep IT True" Festival in Lauda-Koenigshofen Germany. With "real life" responsibilities dictating progress, it has been slow going....but Fifth Angel is working towards a goal of releasing new music to round out the previous releases from so many years ago. It is unknown if this goal will be reached...only time will tell...

Entity of Hate
Entity of Hate
Cursed for Eternity
released date: January 20th, 2017
Entity of Hate’s four-song EP is melodic, atmospheric extreme metal, perhaps mostly coming across as black metal, but not strictly so, given that there is a substantial amount of guitar-centered shred melodies. The EP results in a teaser, more than anything, something that would leave the listener wanting more. The EP creates the notion that there should be a full-length album on the way if we are going to get a better picture of Entity of Hate’s music. On the other hand, the EP is a good way to create anticipation for more.
OFFICIAL: Member of the well acclaimed atmospheric black metal band DIABOLUS ARCANIUM has started a new band called ENTITY OF HATE. The music is black/death metal this time around and is much faster and more intense while being suitably atmospheric. 'Cursed for Eternity' is the band's debut, featuring four intricately composed tracks. They are looking forward to setting new standards for this kind of music in India with this offering. It's unique in its own way, enthusiastic and holds a lot of promise. Check it out if you're into black/death metal with a melodic flourish and an eerie vibe.
Attempting to explore brand new realms, the newly-renamed Indian atmospheric black/death metallers Entity of Hate have come together from the previous efforts released as Diabolus Arcanium to offer faster, more intense efforts while still staying true to the atmospheric ideals. Starting out with their own voice, the groups’ first release under this banner was self-released January 17, 2017.
Taking a harder-hitting approach than their previous moniker, the group is quite adept at their fiery and melodic brand of blackened death metal. Efforts like the title track and “Lovers and Prey” fire off plenty of swirling tremolo rhythms with a furious singeing charge, it gives this the kind of explosive main rhythm that allows for both atmosphere and melody to run rampant throughout here. Alongside the melodic fervor attempted here, the bands’ steady and simplified tempos keep this one pretty straightforward, letting the tremolo-picked riffing take center stage in the album which makes this one rather fun for the most part. They’re atmospheric, melodic and still retain a fiery edge, making for a wholly enjoyable offering here. There’s just not a whole lot really here, as the three originals are pretty straightforward and the finale is an instrumental cover of a video game song. There’s just not a whole lot else to this one.
Without a whole lot of differences with this one and not nearly enough time to really get into it other than on the surface quality, there’s plenty to like here for fans of the bands’ previous moniker or this style of melodic atmospheric-heavy death metal who don’t mind the brevity.
track list:
1.Cursed For Eternity 03:40
2.Lovers & Prey 04:29
3.Heart Shaped Dagger 03:53
4.Bloody Tears (Castlevania) 02:22

review by Dee: Hån
Hån – Facilis Descensus Averni
It’s about time an underground black metal band spoil us. Switzerland’s Hån gives us nothing less than grim emotion on their latest full-length, Facilis Descensus Averni. Hån is the Norwegian word for “scorn,” and their tribute to ridicule is stained on each and every one of the tracks on Facilis Descensus Averni.
Loose percussion ignites track number one, “Black Banners”; a swarm of melancholy instrumentation treads under piercing screams, awaking the theme of the album. Guitars scratch through “Desublimation,” and the arrangement of the melody and vocals makes it feel like a rallying, dark anthem. “Distant Lights” quickly builds up and feeds listeners hyper blast beats. Sealing up the album is “Summum Bonum.” Vocals and instruments work together to give a final outcry, but the album’s effects are to be everlasting.
Hån’s interpretation of black metal is beyond satisfying. Songs don’t bleed together in a monotonous lump; each track is marked with its own vibe, where the vocals come from a believable place. Facilis Descensus Averni buzzes with woeful melodies, and the percussion maintains an urgent and forceful nature throughout the songs. Overwhelmingly honest and overwhelmingly desolate sums up Facilis Descensus Averni.

review by Matt Spall: Ancient Ascendant
Artist: Ancient Ascendant
Album Title: Raise The Torch
Label: Spinefarm Records / Candlelight Records
Date Of Release: 21 April 2017
When the legendary Dan Swanö is quoted as saying that Ancient Ascendant are ‘one of the best brutal bands to come out of Britain, well, ever’, I don’t really have any choice but to investigate further. Who am I to ignore a ringing endorsement like this from such an important name within extreme metal circles?
To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure that I’ve have given this album a go if it hadn’t been for Swanö’s interjection, so I have yet another reason to be indebted musically to the legendary Swede.
‘Raise The Torch’ is the third album from the UK extreme metallers and the first to cross my path. And the first thing that strikes me is just how different this sounds. It is no exaggeration to describe the output of Ancient Ascendant as a blend of death metal, black metal, classic metal, hard rock, thrash metal and prog. There’s even a faint echo of a few other things in the melting pot too. The way I’m describing this, you must be thinking ‘oh, that sounds like it could be messy’.
And you’re right, the result could sound messy, disjointed and lacking cohesion. And yet it doesn’t. This is a rip-roaring album that works pretty much from start to finish, where the enjoyment levels are cranked up to the max, accentuated by a strong production courtesy of Ritual Sound and Swanö himself (Unisound). I’ve become pretty hooked on this record if I’m honest.
The black and death metal genres, by their very nature are usually associated with the darker side of life but whilst these elements play a big part in the Ancient Ascendant sound, the music here frequently comes across as being quite upbeat and infectious. Yes, there are sections that are extreme and intense and in no way can ‘Raise The Torch’ be considered ‘happy’. However, the venom is tempered all the while by huge grooves, large slabs of melody, interesting song structures or simply an almost intangible vibrancy that permeates the album.
The juxtaposition of various, competing ideas in turn then creates something of a progressive vibe. Whether this was by accident or design, it matters not because to my mind, the end result is all that matters. Each of the nine compositions has a strong identity at its core but within that, Ancient Ascendant afford themselves the space to experiment. And this experimentation, although not overdone, makes the listening experience exciting and rather exhilarating. I’m struggling to think of another band currently on the scene who has anything significant in common with Ancient Ascendant, something that can only be positive.
On to the music itself in more detail and ‘Raising The Torch’ kicks things off with an atmospheric instrumental that is elegant and refined. It has a sinister edge that’s pure black metal intro fodder but it is also quite beautiful and cinematic in scope.
After one minute and 31 seconds, ‘Our Way’ enters the fray to kick things off properly. It starts with a frosty guitar line, very old school black/death in tone before exploding thanks to some frenetic drumming from Dave Moulding and faster-paced riffing from guitarists Alex Butler and Nariman Poushin. At this point, vocalist Alex Butler delivers a deep, guttural death growl which shakes the earth. The pace slackens slightly to be replaced by a groovy and melodic riff that has burrowed right under my skin. The fact that it is overlaid by a much higher-pitched, raspy and thoroughly caustic black metal scream, only enhances its overall impact. There’s a nice moment of respite where the bass of Alan Webb comes through nicely in the mix before the track gallops to a close via some expressive and exuberant lead guitar work. Dare I begin to call this ‘nasty, feel good music’?
‘Scaling The Gods’ comes out of the traps like a scolded rat, full of energy and intent. Again, whilst it has extreme metal tendencies, there’s a playful edge to much of it, particularly when the guitars go all classic hard rock on us in the mid-section, complete with hand-clapping if my ears aren’t deceiving me.
The doom metal references loom large within ‘Unearth’ as the pace is slowed slightly, fed by twisted, vaguely discordant riffs before being replaced by a truckload of groove interspersed with moments of black metal malevolence or extreme death metal brutality.
For me, ‘Foreign Skies’ is the absolute high point within this excellent record. It begins in very chilled fashion, delivering delicate atmospheric melodies with gorgeous clean guitars and some stunning bass work. The heaviness comes in out of nowhere like a slap in the face. The guitars chug with menace one minute and then inject black metal voracity the next whilst the vocals are venomous either in black or death mode. However, the music retains its melodic edge wonderfully, occasionally reverting to the quieter intro melody to create variety and keep the listener fully engaged. The groove-laden chug at the mid-point is marvellous as is the ensuing riff which is equally groovy but more expansive and brimming with cheekiness. This is the kind of music that’ll have you grinning like a loon, trust me.
‘Grasping The Torch’ is thoroughly infectious thanks to yet more solid and commanding riffing. Out of nowhere the heaviness departs to be replaced by an all-too-brief jazz-tinged progressive interlude that calls to mind the likes of Opeth. However, just as quickly, this is eclipsed by one of the most thunderous sections anywhere on the record as the song powers to a conclusion. Naturally, as is the Ancient Ascendant way, the conclusion is reached via a few ubiquitous twists and turns fuelled by a large helping of daring do in the process.
If ‘The Great Curve’ doesn’t get you banging your head from the outset then the conclusion must be that you’re deaf, whilst it is left to ‘To The Cold’ to see ‘Raise The Torch’ to its conclusion, which it does with the kind of panache and uniqueness that is a hallmark of this album. Frequent shifts in tempo and a demonstrable classic heavy metal vibe supplement the more extreme elements. And the outro delivers a wonderfully dramatic and epic-sounding conclusion, just as it should.
To conclude, ‘Raise The Torch’ is a fabulous record. The music is hugely engaging and memorable but what I like most about it is that these guys clearly enjoyed making this music, they are assured and accomplished in what they are doing and it shows. Nothing is off limits for Ancient Ascendant and ‘Raising The Torch’ is all the stronger for it. What a record!

NEWS: Aggression
Friends into traditional, riff-centered, speed-focused thrash metal will want to spend some time listening to the complete album by the returning Canadian band Aggression. Their origins go all the way back to the middle of the 1980s when thrash was taking over the heavy metal music underground scenes in many places. It's no problem if you do not know who they are because there are hundreds and hundreds of 80s thrash bands that people have not heard. The important thing is that they got their act together, the fire was once again inside their bellies and brains and they managed to get back up for the thrash supporters of the world. They are back screaming about all sorts of violence and incorrigible behavior because apparently life and age has not taught them to grow up and start talking about the importance of recycling your plastics and telling you which capitalist politician to vote for, unlike some other thrash bands. Stay away from these old Canadians if you are easily offended. They are still a bunch of perverts who should be in jail but somehow have managed to deceive the Canadian authorities into allowing them to be free men in society. Boy, what a mistake that was! Just listen to the new album. Sick puppies. Warning: they have songs about bodily fluids. Double warning: bang your head!
Aggression
Fragmented Spirit Devils
release date: November 10th, 2016
label: Xtreem Music
OFFICIAL: 3rd album, first one since '87 by this mythic canadian Thrash Metal featuring Brian Langley (ex-INFERNÄL MÄJESTY) on vocals and a little bit more Death Metal tinged approach while still retaining that main full raging Thrash Metal basis. Their sound swims in the same seas of bands like POSSESSED, DARK ANGEL, HELLWITCH, INFERNÄL MÄJESTY, MORBID SAINT.
OFFICIAL: Classic thrash metal band AGGRESSION from Canada have employed the services of Brian Langley of the legendary Canadian band INFERNAL MAJESTY to do vocals for their new album on Xtreem Music. AGGRESSION have been around since the 80s and have unfortunately remained unheralded over the decades, but Xtreem Music has stepped up to not only re-release their classic album 'The Full Treatment' but also put out their brand new one. This album retains the original charm and yet manages to sound relevant today. 'Fragmented Spirit Devils' sounds sufficiently vitriolic and juicy, something which the polished, sterile bands of today fail miserably to achieve. So dig into this fresh slab of old school thrash metal from the masters themselves.
OFFICIAL: Aggression was formed in the spring of 1985 (originally under the moniker "Asylum"), by the 2 guitar shredders Sasquatch and Burn. Rounding out the lineup was Botcher on vocals, Dug on Bass and Gate on drums. After a few demos they
recorded "Forgotten Skeleton" in 1986. Unfortunately the album would not see a release until 2005. (Almost 20 years later!) After some lineup changes, Aggression recorded and released 1987's The Full Treatment. They received good reviews for there demos and The Full Treatment, and very quickly became one of the most popular metal bands in Quebec and Canada. Their concerts were sold out everywhere, and the fanbase grew from hundreds to thousands in no time. With his public relations expertise, their manager at the time (Johnny Hart) quickly made Aggression an household name. Other
bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Hallow's eve, Destruction and others all wanted to see the beast for themselves and meet Aggression while they were in Montreal. Playing numerous concerts with bands such as Anvil, Celtic Frost, Voïvod, Nuclear Assault, Agnostic Front, D.R.I., Possessed, Dark Angel, Crumbsuckers, Sacrifice and others. Due to certain members drug habits and bad decision making the band was all but dead in 1989.
Fast forward to 2005. The 1986 unreleased album Forgotten Skeleton gets released and see's the band reunite at Montreal Metal Massacre fest 2005. Unable to commit to anthing more than a few reunion shows it was decided that the band would be
put to rest once more. Aggression's 30 year anniversary is looming. Could 2015 see the return of these Frozen Aggressors?

NEWS: Seattle Extreme Prog Metallers A FLOURISHING SCOURGE Releasing Debut Album in June
A Flourishing Scourge, a progressive extreme metal band from the state of Washington, U.S., has begun the march towards the release of its self-titled debut album in June. In the state of Washington they have been building up their name, and their reputation as good musicians has been growing. Their take on extreme metal is a serious endeavor, much of it showing black metal affinities in the guitar work, while the progressive side keeps up a high level of musicianship, too, and with eye towards keeping the metal at the forefront. In all truth, this band and this music is not easy listening and it invites the listeners to take a more active role in the experience in order to appreciate it. The album itself is not something that one listen will reveal in its entirety, but fortunately the band has decided to ease you into the world of A Flourishing Scourge's extreme and progressive metal by posting a new song at the first link below. Consider this your first invitation. One step at a time. There is more coming. A lot more.

NEWS: Irony Destroyed
The metalcore band Irony Destroyed (Kenya) now has its debut EP ready for listening and it is called Strife to Legacy and it is now available on YouTube, Bandcamp and other places. Perhaps it took longer than the band expected, but the music is finally here and that’s something to celebrate. Check it out at the link below.
BIO: Irony Destroyed was formed in 2012 by Nelson “Ecclesiastes” Musyoka. Still young and in high school but that did not stop him from forming a hard-hitting metal band. He wrote some songs and met up with three of his friends to make all their dreams come true.
They played and practiced some covers and recorded two tracks namely, “Think Twice, if Possible Thrice” and, “Sun as a Home” in 2013 when everyone was through with high school. That was until when the members of the band left to continue with their further studies. By then, Irony Destroyed (Earlier) had only recorded two songs in their practice room (On a laptop).
In 2014, Nelson found the Lead guitarist, Lenny Kiano on Irony Destroyed’s Facebook page and boy could he shred. Had some awesome riffs, he was definitely going to be the lead guitarist. Lenny then became in charge of the band and recruiting new members when Nelson left to study as well.

interview: Wretch
Wretch is a traditional heavy metal band from Ohio, U.S. and they play what some Europeans call “U.S. metal.” Wretch is real heavy metal for people who want precisely that: traditional heavy metal. There was heavy metal in the 80s and there is heavy metal today, and that’s why Wretch exists. They play the music honestly and do it the best that they can. It’s about guitars, it’s about solos and it’s about singing. They are not a fancy, plastic, fake rock band and they are not full of themselves. They have been around the block a few times and they are stubborn and they believe in this music as a positive force in life, as they reveal in this interview. Their newest album is called The Hunt. Let’s find out more about it.
Hello! I am listening to your new album The Hunt now and I have been listening to it quite a bit for weeks now. Is it correct that Wretch recently played in Germany, in 2017? How was that experience for you, as an American band from Ohio? You played your new album material?
Hi, there! We actually did a 3-week European tour in March of 2017. We played shows in Germany, Belgium and Holland. It was a great experience for us; Europe is definitely our market. We played some new material, but we also played music from all of our releases, including Reborn (2006), the Make this Garden Burn EP (2007), the Rise to Power EP (2013) and the Warriors album (2014). This isn't the first time Wretch has played Germany, having appeared at the "Headbangers Open Air" festival in 2007, and Greece's "Up the Hammers" festival in 2013.
I am familiar with The Hunt and the previous album Warriors (2014). However, I did not realize that Wretch’s history goes back to 1984! Is that true? 1984?! So, who are the current members and how long has each current member been in the band?
Yeah, we've been around for quite a while. The only member that has been consistent throughout the life of the band is Nick Giannakos (guitars). Jeff Curenton (drums) from the original line-up has recently rejoined, though. He appeared on the Reborn album and now The Hunt. He's been with Wretch (1986-1990, 2003-2006, 2015-present) Tim Frederick (bass) has been with the band since 2006. Mike Stephenson (guitars) joined in 2011, and finally Juan Ricardo (vocals) joined in 2016.
For some European supporters of traditional heavy metal, the term “U.S. metal” means heavy metal from Ohio, a place that has quite a number of metal bands with cool histories, even though the metal music press in the U.S. does not cover it much. Do you all live in Ohio now? How is the Ohio metal scene for Wretch?
We all currently live in Ohio. We do have a lot of what they call "U.S. Metal" in Ohio, and yes, we are largely neglected by the U.S. metal press. We have a small metal scene in Ohio. We get some local support, but it's pretty limited. We do a few shows a year in the Cleveland area; usually try to limit it to the festival type events where a bunch of bands play or opening for larger acts like Fates Warning and Iced Earth.
Wretch has called Ohio an “industrial wasteland.” Can you explain what you mean by that?
Specifically in Northeast Ohio, specifically the Cleveland and Youngstown areas, just got wiped out in the mid-80s when the Steel Mills closed. We all grew up with that. There's not a lot of hope for the American dream when all the good paying jobs are wiped out and the infrastructure is just crumbling around you. A lot of crime and drugs and no jobs. That's what we mean by "industrial wasteland,” and for all of us through the years, playing music was our escape from that.
Coming back to The Hunt. This is your new album and I’m sure it took blood, sweat and tears to make it because I’m pretty sure that you are not rolling in the cash. Where does Wretch record its music?
Ha ha! We are definitely not rolling in the cash! Before this album, we'd pay to go into a studio to record. We finally wised up and put our own studio together (we call it "WRETCH's Bargain Basement Studio"). We invested in a top of the line mixing board, computer, monitors and we've been around long enough to be able to pull together any other odds and ends we need for a few weeks while we record. The Hunt is the first album we recorded all by ourselves and we think it came out great. We do pay to have the final mixing and mastering done by a great German sound engineer, Achim Kohler. He does all of Primal Fears albums, but has also worked with Amon Amarth and some other well-known bands.
I want to thank you for continuing to make music, especially traditional heavy metal, in age in which it is very underreported. You know that there are fashions and trends, but Wretch is swimming against the stream in the U.S. What makes you determined to keep going?
What keeps us going is that we love the music, and there are some people out there that still love the same music. Like we said, when we go to Europe, they really get what we are doing.
I have read the lyrics to the previous album Warriors. One theme that runs through those lyrics is the idea of being strong in the face of obstacles. Living in Ohio, do you see some people who are discouraged in life?
There are a lot of folks that live in despair in Ohio. Ohio currently has probably the worst heroin epidemic in the country (and that's saying something because it's bad all over). I guess when we write lyrics, we tend not to focus on the grim reality (although "Straight to Hell" kind of does just that), but in general, we just try to entertain, maybe give somebody something to forget for a while about the normal everyday s## they are dealing with.
On this album you have mostly rockers, as usual. “The Hunt” and “Throne of Poseidon” are uptempo songs. You also have some songs that have midtempo stomping rocking sound, that “U.S. metal.” These sounds are what Wretch is all about. “Once in a Lifetime” towards the end of the album is also an uptempo, rocking song, for instance. Yet, the new album has the acoustic song “She Waits.” What prompted you to do this track? It’s definitely different from the other songs.
Wretch is a pretty guitar-centric band, the twin lead guitars is pretty important to our sound. Nick and Mike have been playing together for years. Mike was actually Nick's guitar student some 30 years ago and then started playing in bands starting in the early 90s after WRETCH went dormant. Nick and Mike both have a love of classical and shred guitar, so there's always some kind of classical guitar thing getting noodled around in the background. That song was written by Nick and almost didn't appear on the album. We added it at the last minute because we didn't think there was enough material.
Now that you have the new album out, will you be able to play more shows in your region?
We'll definitely be playing some shows in the Midwest this year. We'll likely have a CD release party here in May (U.S. release hasn't occurred yet). We're hoping to get back to Europe again before too long, as well.
Do you do regular updates?
Most of our updates come out on Facebook and Twitter but we also have a webpage. The best news we can share is that we exist, hopefully some traditional metal fans find their way to us. Our album The Hunt will be out in the U.S. in April. We've also got a limited release of vinyl for both The Hunt and Warriors, in fact, the Warriors vinyl is a special double-vinyl that got new cover art. Those can be found here at the Pure Steel shop below.
Thanks again for your time and music.
Thanks for caring!

review: Cryonic Temple
Cryonic Temple
Into The Glorious Battle
Scarlet Records
Release: 21 April 2017
Cryonic Temple returns with a statement album after years of studio silence. Metal Archives shows that their previous album is from 2008. They began in 1996 and had four albums released before this new one, which is an affirmation of power metal. The loyalists of traditional metal music melodic forms will consider this work by the Swedes as a great example of the genre in 2017. Their objective is to remind their supporters that the band is very much alive, contrary to how it may have seemed for a while, due to the personnel changes over the years.
There are 13 songs that illustrate the main ideas of glorious power metal, beginning with speedfest numbers with thrash-level velocities and uptempo rockers contagious from start to end, forwards and backwards, right side up and upside down. These Swedes have no shame, no shame at all; they want to take over the world right this minute and they seek to convince anyone within striking distance. They take the listener from the highest of highs to the agony and melancholy of the power ballads (three of them, including the closing track as an epic conclusion to the album) that will make you take out your lighter and wave your arms side to side. War, victory, defeat, death, solitude, fury, consolation, joy and desperation, it's all in this tour de force of an album.
The new album shows the band as a major exponent of European power metal. The sound on this album incorporates keyboards as a strong background component that smoothes out the music and adds a permanent element of melody. The guitar work delivers everything expected in this field: fast riffs, uptempo rhythms, fast solos and catchy melodies. In addition, there are some bluesy elements during the power ballads, amongst other places. Everything you want in power metal guitar is present. The bass guitar is not very audible, but "Prepare for War" certainly shows the bass guitar. The drums do not sound like real drums due to the clean production. You can't hear much in the way of cymbal work and the double bass is clicky, as it tends to be in so much of modern metal genres, unfortunately.
The singing is done very well and appropriately for the genre in the sense that it is melodic with both (1) a massive appeal potential and (2) without all the annoying things associated with singing. (1) The singing is very friendly to the ear, in a way that is pop and good for radio, not just for heavy metal audiences. Anyone who hears the power ballad "The War Is Useless" will find the singing to be pleasant and perfect for singing along. (2) The singing is a type of midrange vocal style, but with enough of an upper range to be totally in the territory of melody. There are no forced and out-of-place shrill high notes that some people dislike about traditional metal singing.
Trivia. The band shows some quick flashes of homage to heavy metal and to 80s pop. These include vocal phrases like "steel meets steel," quick keyboards phrasings that recall the power metal renaissance in the 90s, like HammerFall and Edguy. Some of the keyboards parts recall 80s pop, of course, as is usual with power metal. In certain spots, they might be channeling Europe or Cutting Crew. They also could be invoking a bit of Gun n Roses’ “November Rain” in the aforementioned power ballad “The War Is Useless.”
The work is a rebirth for the band. They took their time with this album and the results speak for themselves. Power metal supporters will do themselves a great favor to hear this album in its totality. It should not take more than a few listens to begin understanding that is a strong return for the band in all the songs.
Go here to hear a new song now before the album is out.
