Sweden has long been held in high regard as one of the hotbeds of global death metal. With their third full-length, Stockholm’s Lik only add fuel to this fire. “The title of the record is Misanthropic Breed, because it describes the world today and the generations that are emerging,” states vocalist/guitarist Tomas Åkvik. “In a way it's more applicable than ever with the quote ‘It's every man for himself’ being so suitable, and it’s also a ‘hidden’ homage to both Dismember and Entombed.”

The quartet - rounded out by guitarist Niklas “Nille” Sandin, drummer Chris Barkensjö and bassist Joakim “Myre” Antman - who take their name from the Swedish word for ‘Corpse’, had their work cut out for them following up their career best, 2018’s Carnage. “Carnage is still a record that we are really proud of, it’s a lot of cool songs that brings you right back down memory lane to where it all began even though they were newly recorded, and we played a lot of cool gigs and met a lot of really nice people touring it.” They had no specific plan going into the writing sessions for what would become Misanthropic Breed, just to “write new Lik songs with the ambition of kicking the older albums’ asses.” Having made his recording debut with 2019’s STHLM Death Metal EP, this was Antman’s first full-length with Lik and his presence only improved the great ideas the band were coming up with. “The feeling of Misanthropic Breed is that it goes from sometimes very melodic stuff to very dark and eerie landscapes. We still have the ‘Iron Maiden’ feeling but I think it’s a lot darker at times. Sound-wise it’s more brutal but still very clear and you can hear what’s going on almost all the time, and the songs have a more mature feeling and are more straightforward.”

Far darker in tone and with fewer jokes than included on their previous releases, when it came to lyrical subject matter the band were influenced partially by movies and books, but most of their inspiration came from looking back at their own catalogue. “The songs are inspired by older Lik songs, and where we could take a new direction from that. Of course there are other bands that we love involved as well, but for example, “Female Fatal to the Flesh” is an evolved take on “The Deranged” from Carnage mixed with “Skin Necrosis” from Mass Funeral Evocation (2015) while “The Weird” is an even more brutal “Ghoul” from the same record. Then there’s “Corrosive Survival” which was inspired by the disaster of Chernobyl, and “Morbid Fascination” is like a Metallica/Entombed/Dismember track which turned out really cool. I think the main inspiration is still drawn from old school death metal, which we think is how death metal should be played.” Having planned to track the record at Stockholm’s Solna Studio’s the band’s intentions were derailed by the Covid-19 lockdowns, and they were forced instead to record it at their rehearsal space, but this did not prove to its detriment. “The question as to whether what we’re doing is good enough gnaws at us through the whole process when we make an album, and it was frustrating sometimes that things didn’t work out the way we wanted, but I think our producer Lawrence Mackrory (Obey Mastering) did an awesome job of pulling us through the whole thing. So all credit goes to him.” Given the quality of the finished product and the fact they have superseded all of their previous recordings the quartet really should not have worried if what they were doing was up to their high standard, and it opens the door to the next exciting phase in the existence of one of Sweden’s heaviest exports.

The infamous Bay Area has a long and extensive metal history. Responsible for many truly groundbreaking acts (just think of Exodus, Testament, Forbidden, Heathen or Blind Illusion) for over three decades now, the city by the bay has spawned some of the most innovative and exceptional talent there is.

HEXX, one of the third-generation power metal bands emerging from San Franciso, were originally formed in late 1984. Their first album entitled »No Escape« was only released in the US (by the legendary Shrapnel label) and began shaping a steadily growing fan base for the band. It was followed by »Under the Spell« and »Quest for Sanity« marking the end of HEXX Mark I. At that time, internal changes were taking place within the ranks of HEXX that would alter their musical direction quite fundamentally. On the strength of a new song called “Watery Graves“ (released as an EP on Wild Rags Records), HEXX were signed by Century Media Records. The following album, 1991's »Morbid Reality«, marked HEXX's evolution from a more or less traditional speed/power metal band to a brutal, technically-inclined thrash/death metal outfit.

With their comeback record »Wrath Of The Reaper« (issued on High Roller Records in 2017), however, HEXX were returning to their traditional power metal roots. Now, three years later, the Mark III incarnation of HEXX is returning with a brand new studio album entitled »Entangled In Sin«. “The new album was recorded at the Sonic Room Studios in Livermore California and was engineered by Tim Narducci and produced by Bart Gabriel,” explains guitarist and founding member Dan Watson. “We put a lot more time and thought into pre-production with this album than we did for the »Wrath Of The Reaper« record.”

“»Entangled In Sin« is, in my opinion, a better record,” Dan Watson carries on by comparing the last two HEXX albums. “Not that »Wrath Of The Reaper« is without its moments, but this new album is superior in many ways. Better songs and better production for sure. For this recording, we wrote and rehearsed everything with the click track in mind. We paid special attention to the tempos so that the riffs would flow and grove the way we wanted them to for maximum crushing power. Lyrically, this album also has a more focused message than its predecessor.” Stylistically »Entangled In Sin« is much closer to HEXX’s power metal roots than to the band’s brutal thrash/death metal period. It’s a classic US Metal album, going back to the glory days of the 1980s (albeit with a much stronger production).

HenoH -- metal from Poland

HenoH (Poland) recently wrote to Metal Bulletin Zine about their 2020 recording called "Demonstration." Their Facebook does not have a whole lot of information, but the recording is on Bandcamp. Their music is thrash/death/groove. Megadeth fans might notice the influence of the song "Symphony of Destruction" on the second track called "Quinas." American fans of 1990s groove metal like Pantera and that period of Sepultura might enjoy the old-school grooves of Henoh in some spots. The vocals are growled in a death metal style, and the music is direct and heavy, the way that some American fans like their metal: simple, heavy, groovy, and stomping.

Metal Rules zine wrote back in 2001, in part: This Chicago, five-piece was nice enough to send me their demo and I’m glad they did because I really enjoy it. The music could be described as a sort of a gothic, doom-death kick-ass kinda thing….very cool. It has progressive elements that are innovative but don’t stray away from the core of metal. It’s not prog in the sense of Dream Theater with layers of keyboard solos but more progressive with the use of classical music elements. The thing I like about this CD is it does have a unique sound, it sounds like a few other bands that you can’t quite put your finger on which is good because you don’t want to wear your influences on your sleeve.

The musicians are very talented and have some excellent song-writing tricks. Check out the acoustic, flamenco part at the beginning of the 10+ minute song The Solemn Promise, again, very cool, reminded me a little of the way Conception used to fool around with that sound. Vocals are low and slightly gutteral without being inaccessible or inaudible. However, major complaint, they are waaay too far back in the mix. The singer Luis has a cool voice that could be a weapon in their arsenal but it is a secret weapon, hidden, not emphasized…yet. That will be easily overcome with the next demo or an external producer. The rest of the musicians seem very competent and the guitars has a nice melancholy drone or buzz at times only adding excellent atmosphere to already atmospheric song writing. A lot of emotion and fell went into the song-writing, nothing sterile or unimaginative here! The drummer and bassist keep it punchy on the tune Standing in A Different Light, which has a great Entombed death-rock vibe to it.

About: The Reticent is an NC outfit that is, as Hard Rock Haven put it, “progressive in the truest sense of the term.” Beginning as an atmospheric acoustic side project for mastermind Chris Hathcock while he toured with war-metallers Wehrwolfe, The Reticent has become a fully realized emotional experience rooted in progressive rock and metal. This was epitomized in the band’s critically acclaimed 2016 release on Heaven & Hell Records, “On The Eve Of A Goodbye” produced by Jamie King (BTBAM, The Contortionist, Scale the Summit). The album was a tragic autobiographical concept record that chronicled the day before, day of, and the day after the suicide of Hathcock’s childhood friend Eve. Critics and fans of the record alike were moved by the compelling narrative and heartrending performances. Hatchcock adds: “As with my previous album, I hope that ‘The Oubliette’ will provide listeners with a rich and emotionally challenging audio experience. The album as a whole: “The Oubliette” is a progressive metal concept album focused on Alzheimer’s disease. The album follows the journey of an old man named Henry (based upon a relative of songwriter Chris Hathcock) as he descends through the seven stages of Alzheimer’s. He doesn’t know where he is or why he’s there. He doesn’t remember his wife is dead. He doesn’t recognize his son. Step by step the disease takes his memories, his ability to speak, his ability to walk, his ability to breathe. The music of “The Oubliette” traverses styles as divergent as jazz and black metal all within the framework of emotionally driven progressive metal. With each track sonically independent from its predecessor, the album moves the listener from experience to experience, vague memories to dreams and nightmares all toward its heartbreaking finale.

review: Sacred Outcry -- prog power from Greece

After some 90 seconds of intro the first song kicks off with “Legend of the Fallen”: majes-tic heroic heavy metal that gallops to glory with gigantic melodies, good singing, air raid siren, and a super catchy chorus. This song is the type that German fans of power and heavy metal welcome with wide open arms and embrace as perfection during those open air festivals. The next two songs, unlike the slow burner heroic pace of the first song, summon a faster tempo of symphonic heavy metal. Fans of epic heavy metal, traditional heavy metal, and power metal should be pleased so far.

It turns out that things change a lot after the above songs, and the album takes a turn towards prog metal, and listeners need to be prepared for the change. It all starts with a soft ballad (#5) that slows down the momentum. The ballad is followed by a rocker, and the rocker by a midtempo prog number. It is all done well because they have the skills and the production team to make it sound good. The potential problem is that the band has changed genres! Then, the title track arrives and it is a long prog power track (some 14 and a half minutes). This song is for the fans of prog, like the fans that tru-ly enjoy the plodding prog of Iron Maiden as elderly gentlemen or the meandering slower sounds of Manowar as senior citizens. The last song is a return to the energy of the first few songs.

The audiences that prefer more metal than prog may find that this album leans a bit too much towards prog, while audiences that have a passion for prog-leaning tradi-tional heavy metal might just find that this is a very good balance of prog with heavy metal. A skillfully done album.

Devil Empire -- symphonic extreme metal from Tunisia

Biography: Devil Empire is a Tunisian death/black metal band based in Tunis, one of the first metal bands in Tunisia formed in 1999 by sam Klai ("Lord Kobal") and Moez Tounsi ("Immortal"), the group has been through several personal changes including the replacement of every single original members.

Devil Empire has consistently incorporated folk, classical influences into it's usually lengthy compositions, as well as strong influences from death metal, especially in their early works. The band rarely made live appearances supporting their first album. Devil Empire has released one EP "Painful Crying" in 2012 and a demo "Rise of a Black Sun" in 2001. Devil Empire did not experience major commercial success because of their extreme music was and still suppressed in the Tunisian community.

Leng Tch'e -- grind from Belgium

Biography: The development of veteran bands follows established patterns. Some become complacent and happy to release a regular string of barely inspired albums. Others take their time and with no need to prove anything wait until the time is ripe to hammer out another crusher that demonstrates their hard-won maturity much to the delight of their following. Leng Tch'e fall into the latter category. The Belgian death grind extremists obviously felt no rush to follow-up their latest sonic assault 'Hypomanic' (2010), but their new sixth full-length aptly named after their self-chosen style description 'Razorgrind' comes with everything that their die-hard fans want to hear. Short, sharp chops crammed with brutal riffing, down-tuned grinding and a knack for deadly melodies over which frontman Sergeï bellows belligerent and fury-filled vocal lines.

Leng Tch'e have fine-tuned their particular genre-mix ever since the release of their first split EP with Black Ops in 2002. Grind, hardcore, and death metal form the main ingredients, but traces of cleverly inserted doom, stoner rock, and other eclectic influences can also be identified. Their name was inspired by an ancient imperial Chinese torture ritual, which the Belgians alluded to in their debut album 'Death by a Thousand Cuts' that also came out in 2002 - only one year after their inception. This created a buzz in the underground that grew considerably louder with the release of the follow-up 'ManMadePredator' in 2003.

International breakthrough came for Leng Tch'e with their widely acclaimed third full-length 'The Process of Elimination' (2005), which combined catchy hooks with extreme grind. Invitations to major festivals such as Furyfest, Graspop, Summer Breeze, and Maryland Deathfest as well as worldwide touring were their reward. 'Marasmus' (2007) witnessed Leng Tch'e adding more heavy death metal riffing – a trend of carefully widening their musical horizon that continued with album number five, 'Hypomanic'. More touring and festival shows including Hellfest, Neurotic Deathfest, Motocultor, and Metalfest among others followed. Having found and consolidated their own style, the Belgians are now taking the next step forward with 'Razorgrind', which sees all the musical pieces falling firmly into their place.

Slave Traitor (U.S.A.; 2005-2012)

Slave Traitor, says Metal Archives, was a band in Washington state. Metal Archives shows: Black Narcissus EP 2006; Man Infest Destiny EP 2008; Too High to Reach EP 2012.

A person on Metal Archives wrote about this band: For their 2nd EP, Seattle's Slave Traitor deliver six flowing tracks of sludge and doom infused death metal, complete with some bluesy leads and gruff vocals. I could liken this to a less aggressive EyeHateGod, or a less noisy Buzz*oven as far as its riffs are concerned.

"Wilderness of Mirrors" opens the EP and I believe this is the real strong point. It develops a nice atmosphere in its opening riffs and then kicks out a groovy jam with angry vocals, and a little death metal riff over the chorus. I wasn't feeling "Burning Sniper" or "Pill Cutter" as much, both have a groovy sludge dynamic to them with some more uplifting melodic riffs. "The Middle Passage" has a stony heavy metal vibe, and the vocals on this track are pretty nice, it's like a death metal Cirith Ungol, Cathedral or Trouble. It's another of the better tracks. "Insult" rocks out but there is little of note after its initial driving rhythm. "Dust in the Wound" is grooving and angry, with some nice gang shouts.

The EP sounds spectacular, with the perfect bite to the guitars and the vocals sit just above at the proper volume. I also dig the band's aesthetic, especially the cover art with the gasmask visor reflection of a Seattle holocaust. Gives it a sort of thrash feel which actually meshes well with the band's music. I did enjoy a few songs here, but others not so much. Maybe next time. They've definitely got a strong style and if you dig heavier doom with some groove to it (Eyehategod, Grief, etc) then you might get more from this.
