IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. HERE is a previous interview with Al Joseph.

The guitarist Al Joseph (U.S.) first came to the attention of this publication with the band The Great Gamble and the album Book I (2012, according to Metal Archives; on Bandcamp it says it was released in 2015 in that format), a serious and promising work of progressive metal, in the traditional style with melodic singing, but with quite a bit of crunch on the guitars. Today said band, unfortunately, is no longer active, but Al has continued working on his passion: progressive guitar. His first solo instrumental album is called Out in the Open (2013), a work that showed his songwriting abilities, combining thoughtful, melodic guitar with shredding. Nowadays he has several interesting plans in the works, as you will read in this introductory interview. At the end of the interview there are links to hear some of Al’s songs and to learn more about his biography and music. In the meantime, let’s begin the interview.
Al, can we begin with an update of your recent activities and your near-future plans? Have you been doing live shows, for instance? Where are you based at the moment and how has that city been for your music? Are there opportunities for your music?
Well I just recently moved to Los Angeles about a month ago from Boston, MA. Planning for that while working on my next solo record has been such a challenge, but I'm happy to say that I'm settling in just fine.
LA is definitely a better place for musicians. I'm in the final mastering stages of my new solo record which will be called All of Creation. I feel that this is my best work so far considering the songwriting and composition. I really feel that this album will cover a much wider palate of styles and grooves and I'm already having a lot of fun rehearsing for later gigs and appearances.
As far as shows go I'm setting that up with some friends in the states and across seas. There will be updates on my website after the release of the album.
How many albums have recorded so far and where can people hear them? I ask because Metal Archives has listed only one album of yours.
I released Out In The Open back in 2013. For my debut record it had some success, but after touring with my band we thought it would be better to recut the record with a full live band. We finished recording, but just couldn't find the right press to release it again. Seeing as it's been 3 years, it was just time to move on and cut a new record.
Who knows, we might revisit Out In The Open in the future.
What about instructional dvds? How many do you have so far?
I do quite a bit of work with Jam Track Central. Right now I have about 10 different products with JTC ranging from masterclass to demonstrations. I definitely plan on continuing down this road. Linking up with Jonny and the guys has been the single best move I've made for my career so far. These guys support their artists and take all 65 instructors with equal respect. Gotta love a company that does business like that. I couldn't be happier.
You have a band and it's called Al Joseph Group, correct? Who are the members of the band? Do you have a rotating cast of players or a steady line-up?
Because I just moved to LA, I have to search for a new cast and crew. I know the original members plan on making their way over at some point in time, but for now I'm going to patiently continue shopping for new musicians with rotation in mind till the band clicks just right.
That takes a lot of planning on my end. Making sure musicians get paid and don't have to worry about eating and sleeping is the toughest part of touring. So this time I think I'll reach out for help in that area and plan things more thoroughly.
Can you explain the objectives or mission of Jam Track Central? Do you have a specific role with JTC? I'm not sure that I understand what it is.
As for my role, I'm an artist. I simply use my talents to create products that our fans need. The guys that run JTC are 100% connected to our fanbase through running various surveys to gain feedback on how our fans are learning. Because of that our products have evolved into what they are today.
Jam Track Central was originally and still is a backing track company. But instead of just creating random tracks themselves they had the genius idea of calling upon legitimate artists like myself to create tracks and demonstrate how to play over them. This points the artist directly to their fan bases seeing that there's a high demand for quality tracks.
However, JTC has evolved into a site where musicians can learn as well, hence the Masterclass and 20 Lick Packages. It's a great way for artists to share their musical experiences with their fans, fund their various career endeavors, and gain worldwide exposure.
At this point in your career in 2016, what is your assessment of the development of your career as a professional solo guitarist? What achievements are you pleased with and what are some things that remain on your short list of things that you seek to do?
Well I would say that in this short time I've learned a great deal about how my fans see me as both a composer and musician. You see, as an aspiring guitarist growing up we have this picture in our heads as to what kind of guitarist we want to be seen as. A lot of us (I include myself) grow up trying to write the most wowing guitar lines for the musicians, neglecting key elements like song form and arrangement. We risk missing the mark of a true songwriter. But music even in the world of guitar is changing, it's evolving.
I'm glad I took the first step and put myself out there, continuing to release music because now I have a great deal of feedback from both fans of guitar music and the greater public. That is to say I now see my strengths from both sides. That's not to say that I don't cherish my roots as a guitar player, but it's my deep desire that instrumental music makes a greater impact on more than just guitar players.
I've become even less particular about the content of my solos concerning virtuosity and more sensitive to the vibes and emotions my lines give off. You'll see that in my next record for sure. Yes, it's still guitar music, but I'm excited to see the crowd’s reaction to the show we're planning to put on.
As far as the future is concerned I really want to gig and tour much more which is why I moved to LA. I enjoy educating people and sharing my musical experiences, but I feel like there's a side of myself I really need my fans to see. That side can and will only be seen on stage.
What are some specific obstacles that solo prog guitarists face in the music industry nowadays? Some of today's most successful guitarists established themselves decades ago, like Joe Satriani, Tony MacAlpine, Steve Vai and others in the pre-internet days, when the industry was set up differently. What are some things that you have discovered that you needed to tackle in order to move forward? Business aspects, social media, sponsors, equipment, the music press and its coverage, so on and so forth?
I'd say it's songwriting and business savvy.
Artists like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and many more had to do it outside the bedroom. No home studio camera with editing and 100 takes. I'm am very guilty of this Lol. For so long these artists have overcome the challenges of being a working musician. Not to say that those challenges ever went away, but at this point where they are the ones who manage these challenges, not the other way around. They have just become very aware and smarter over the years I'd say. Musicians these days I've found just don't understand or cherish the business mindset. I will go as far to say they fear it. I am always testing for this quality and have to say most just lack the tenacity.
Others think because they're very good at playing guitar they should "make it". It's all a balancing act, all the way up. You have to maintain your chops, but you also have to be open to putting out lots of music, receiving solid feedback from your fans and peers. Just because you have a unique sense of writing doesn't mean it's any good. You're fans decide that eventually as you grow with them. I've found those who possess the deep inner urge to connect emotionally with their audience usually have better results, whether pop star or virtuoso.
So with that being said surround yourself with successful people both business and musically. Learn how they talk, how they vibe, and take massive action.
You probably have told your story many times in interviews, but I have not read it anywhere. How did you get interested in playing an instrument and what do you remember how your interest in guitar started? Did you go to a concert or did you watch a video of a particular guitar player?
I've always been a musician. From the womb. I grew up playing in churches and with friends but it never became a true direction in my life until I ran into the music of my favorite artists.
To sum it up it was my first listen to Joe Satriani's Surfing With The Alien record. Just pure genius, from the songwriting and guitar playing all the way to the production. To this day I take notes on that album and just about every other record he's ever put out. The man still sells out theaters. If you want to make it as a guitar soloist, sit down and have coffee with this guy. (On my to-do list)
John Petrucci is another guy that set the bar high for me for obvious reasons. He's just a powerhouse and another amazing songwriter. I personally think he doesn't get enough credit for his songwriting. He's another example of someone with incredible skill but also through his work with Dream Theater, has a catalogue the size of Texas Lol.
And lastly, my journey continues with inspiration I receive from the guitar players of today. There's just too much to go around but I manage to keep up somehow Lol
I'm loving music at the moment!
This question is the most annoying to you, most likely: why have you chosen to go instrumental? Is there no room for singers in your music? Are there any circumstances in which you would be open to the idea of having singing in your music?
The funny thing about my career now is that I hit up JTC with the intention of bringing more fans to know my band The Great Gamble at the time. In fact, in that band I was the lead singer, so there was no reason to look for one. We've since then broken up so I just continued doing what I loved most. I'm not a singer, I'm a guitar player, but I'm not opposed to being in a band with a singer. In fact, I recently started a new band called The Atman Project in which we'll have a singer, a damn good one by the name of Josiah Baker. Amazing talent that guy and VERY business savvy which is very refreshing. But as for my solo music who knows what the future may hold. For now I prefer it strictly instrumental.
Do you feel a sense of freedom in doing your music without vocals? You don’t have to worry about whether someone will not like the singing style, you don’t have to make the music simpler with lots of choruses so that people understand it, you don’t have to get into current topics like personal, social or political problems/issues and other things like that. Do you feel like you have more freedom to let your guitar playing do the talking?
Wow, this is a great question. I am extremely picky when it comes to vocalists, actually. I don't usually care how they sound within reason, but how well they gel with the music. Most singers think the job is to just sing over the band as opposed to singing with the band. It's extremely irritating for me as someone who plays and actual instrument. Lol
But back to your question. As a guitarist I feel I want the freedom to "let it all out" on the guitar so to speak. But, with newer artists surfacing like David Maxim Micic and Jakub Zytecki having singers on their solo records, I'm starting to see that it's possible without being too corny. There are some solo artists out there I won't mention that tried it and for some reason I find they continue to contract some of the worst vocalists you could possibly imagine for a record. But It's hard to find that balance as a solo artist without becoming a "band". It just depends on the mentality.
I guess for the most part it comes down to the compositional style. I tend to want to keep things more simple when there's a singer involved and I usually play solos in particular spots in that situation. But I love playing the melody so much that I feel there will always be songs on my solo records that will feature only guitar as the "singer". If you gig with me a lot you'll know that it's usually simpler melodic lines I favor the most. There isn't much room for sexy vibrato in shred, so when I compose guitar music I make it a point to compose hooks way before solos.
I do write lyrics, though. I love it, actually. I'm not afraid to be controversial or touch on topics that may offend people. I'm not a particularly "nice" person in that regard Lol. But I avoid being overtly offensive. If the message promotes positivity in any way I'll allow it. If it's nonsense then back to the guitar Lol
Finally, do you have any news or things that you would like mention? Anything else going on that you want to say to the readers?
Yes! Be on the lookout for my new solo record as I mentioned before. It will be called All Of Creation. I wasn't going to say this, but I'm featuring artists Marco Sfogli, Per Nilsson, and Jack Gardiner on this one so it should be a heavy hitter for you guys.
Also be on the lookout for my new band called The Atman Project at the moment. It will be very djent and Dream Theater influenced so I'm very excited to get started on that.
Lastly, I'm back online so gonna be teaching Skype lessons again for those who are ready to start getting to that next level!
Thanks for inviting me guys. It's been a pleasure!
THE END.

OFFICIAL: Starting as a side project from the now defunct band The Fabled, guitarist Rider Ingalls and Vocalist RJ Mitchell started writing new songs different from the Tech death music of the old band, going for a more melodic style of metal. After the first few songs were written the duo decided it would be a good idea to take the project past just songwriting. The lineup over time has filled out with Corvin Costache as a mighty axe-slayer, Brandon Carnahan bringing the thunder on bass and the heart throb from Ohio Josh O'Neil on drums

NEWS: Nightwalkers
The Panamanian metal band Nightwalkers has a new video. Check it out below and bang your head!
Nightwalkers - Nitrogenesis (Official Music Video)
OFFICIAL: Nightwalkers is a Panamanian Thrash / Heavy Metal band created in 2010. Nightwalkers takes ideas from old school by reforming it with a heavy, fast, concrete, melodic sound. Founded by Carlos Shedden and its co-founder, Vladimir Pardales.
History and most relevant presentations: They both took on the task of studying their instruments for a year and then looking for the lineup they needed to start the band and experimenting with musicians. Within these sections, violins, keyboards and guitars were recorded backwards. At the beginning of 2011, Josué Olivero joined the group as a drummer. The musical connection was immediate, but they still needed to find the bass frequencies of the band. During months of rehearsal and composing music composed in summer of 2011. The band tried to work with numerous bassists but none fit with the style that Nightwalkers was elaborating for those days. Until they found Pedro Contreras being the first official bass player of the group.
The band would have its official debut on the streets of Panama on December 17, 2011, in the old bar La Casona, located in the Old Town, the public was surprised that the band performed well the Metal at a young age. After months of several touches in collaboration with other bands, gaining valuable public, Josué Olivero leaves the band in nov. 2012 by musical differences. In December. 2012 are presented in the Christmas parade in a segment called "Christmas Rock" working with Magic Dreams, and the Mayor of Panama along with the collaboration of Conrad Clarke and Kevin Moreno (Drum) session musicians. The band adapted Christmas songs to Rock Heavy and playing emblematic themes of the group as "My Victory" "Across the Fire" "Heroes Of Justice". At the beginning of 2013, as the band did not have a fixed drummer yet and the agenda of presentations continued, the group made the decision to work with more session drummers until getting a fixed one. One can emphasize the presentation of the band in the second A 6 Electric Strings in the Yuyin Luzcando, in which they shared platform with many chants authors of the stature of Luis de la Rosa, Aniel Mejia, Metheora and Yek Gamboa and the missing band of Rock in Spanish, Saints and Demons.
In March 2013, they audition for new drummer and the decision falls positively for Johann Tempest, a conservatory percussionist entering his first steps in Heavy Rock and making his debut in April. Shortly after his entrance to the band, Pedro Contreras leaves the band for university reasons and again the group is without bass. Fortunately this period did not last long, since at the recommendation of Johann, Orlando Cigarruista enters Nightwalkers, being the most stable lineup to date. They participated in the last contest Hard Rock Café in Spanish, in which they had an excellent participation. In August 2013, they were interviewed by TVN Al Descubierto, Tharyn Jimenez, in which they impacted with their social and interpersonal themes and left their desires to arise at national level and transcend borders, which is one of the goals Of this grouping. They performed the Tribute to Iron Maiden 1.0 at the Pavo Real Restaurant along with invited musicians from other groups. This event had a great reception among the audience that could enjoy and chant each of the songs of the mythical band.
In October 2013 begins the project to record his first EP with the support of Rompiendo Bocinas and Vélez Record, a process that lasted several months because the band took the time to find the sound they were looking for and obtaining better equipment to record.
In March of 2014, they appear next to Head of Hammer in Hangar 18, in which the public was enchanted with the presentation of both bands. Being honored by Eric Pinzón in his comments to have been able to share with excellent young musicians and their future success. Even people from the audience claimed to see "Hammerhead in its infancy." The band has appeared several times in the interior of the country, in which we can highlight their concert in the Billar Ken, La Chorrera. Thanks to the impact of the good comments of the tribute to Iron Maiden 1.0, Nightwalkers again of the hand of other musicians realize the Tribute to Iron Maiden 2.0 this time in Hangar 18, which was a full one.
On May 30 Nightwalkers returned to share stage with Hammerhead and with the return of the band Deathless in Hangar 18.
In September 2014 they were part of the second round of the second contest Istmo Rock 2014. In October 2014, the band made a media tour of Panama's key rock radio stations, promoting themselves as a band and announcing that they would release the album in November. Some of these radios were "Radio Metropolis" in the Voltaje 3 program and "Radio Mix" in the Brutal Volume program.
November 22, 2014 they released their first independent album entitled "Path To Reality" EP, an event completely organized by the band in Hangar 18. The event included numerous national rock media such as Rock Flag, Rock Press, La Critica and sponsored by Grecha -Accesorios, Alfaro Company, Plug n Play Test Rooms, PTY Culture and many more. The band took a break to compose new songs and work on their next material. In February 2015 they presented in the first RockFest 2015 of Gaitán Bros and Odebrecht leaving in high a great participation of the Panamanian Metal. They formed part of the bands called for the ExpoTattoo 2015. Stage in which RPG, Os Almirantes, Hammerhead and several others were presented. In May 2015 they were invited by the radio program "Los 40 Principales" to talk a bit about the band and promote the single from the EP Album "Face Your Fears". Thanks to this, in the ears of this radio were invited to realize a media tour by all Mexico D.F, making that the music of the band was heard in Mexican and Costa Rican soil. In July 2015 the band recorded their first audiovisual material titled "Nightwalkers, Bunker Jam Sessions" a DVD that will be released soon, in which the band interprets unpublished tracks to the disc EP. This DVD has no official release date yet. Two DVD tracks can be played for free on Youtube. After a 2015 full of concerts in collaboration with other Panamanian groups like 2 TON YAKAMA, Valkeryon, Elgebar, Votraster and Sonor Storm, the band decides to enter the studio to work on perfecting their sound. On September 11, the band published an official communiqué announcing their first tour around Panama, a tour that begins in October and ends in December.

NEWS: Hypnos lyric video
HYPNOS - The Whitecrow
OFFICIAL: Death Metal commando HYPNOS was founded in the autumn of 1999 from the remnants of the famous Czech band KRABATHOR (est. 1984). The band became the country's leading Death Metal band after four albums and several EPs. HYPNOS have played more than 300 shows all over Europe, among them the WFF and the Brutal Assault also touring alongside BEHEMOTH, MORBID ANGEL, ENSLAVED, DYING FETUS and THE CROWN.
“The Whitecrow“ was recorded by Børge FINSTAD (MAYHEM, IHSAHN, ARCTURUS) again. Christopher (Krabathor), Paul Speckmann (Master), V. Santura (Dark Fortress, Triptykon), Martin Missy (Protector) contributed to the album as guests. Musicologists & press are enthusiastic. The album will be available March 24th 2017 as a Digi-CD+DVD (incl. 3 video clips and a 70 minutes live show) limited to 1.000 copies as well as a standard jewel case CD with a great 28-page booklet, as vinyl & digital.
Few press and musician´s quotes:
“Be prepared for The Dark Side of HYPNOS - the one you have not got a chance to explore yet.“ (Ashok) Cradle Of Filth
“The Whitecrow rises upon the grounds of classic metal but rumbles with an ominous presence of rage and fury that captured me. The title track is truly a brilliant song that eventually will hunt you down. Check it out!” (Øystein Brun) Borknagar
“Hypnos rejuvenated their sound – the result sounds darker, more morbid and intense than ever before, still not losing any class, on the contrary. "The Whitecrow" is a strong record with a long shelf-life.” (Frank Albrecht) Deaf Forever
OFFICIAL: HYPNOS was founded back in 1999 by BRUNO (bass / guitar / vocals) and PEGAS (drums), previously involved with the band KRABATHOR. Instantaneously Hypnos became one of the leading Czech/Slovakian death metal acts.
Having signed with Morbid Records (de) in 2000, the self-titled MCD got released followed by the debut full-length ‘In Blood We Trust’ the same year, featuring Mika Luttinen / IMPALED NAZARENE as guest vocalist. The release was promoted during the NO MERCY FESTIVAL where Hypnos shared the stage alongside MORBID ANGEL, DYING FETUS, BEHEMOTH, ENSLAVED, and THE CROWN.
In 2001, the second album ‘The Revenge Ride’ was released. This album was recorded and mixed by HARRIS JOHNS (HELLOWEEN, KREATOR, SODOM, TANKARD, PESTILENCE, VOIVOD) and mastered at MORRISOUND Studios (Tampa, FL). Following its launching, HYPNOS participated in events including WITH FULL FORCE, SUMMER BREEZE, PARTY-SAN and HELL ON EARTH among others.
The third album ‘Rabble Manifesto’ (2005) recorded again with Harris JOHNS received an extremely positive response within the global metal music media. Additionally the album got nominated for the Czech Andel Award (a Grammy Award equivalent) under the Hard and Heavy category. In January 2006 HYPNOS performed live with CENTINEX and PURGATORY before going on a deliberate hiatus.
Bruno and Pegas reformed Hypnos after four years of silence and the EP ‘Halfway To Hell’ was released. A comeback show was performed at the BRUTAL ASSAULT Fest in 2010 and the band gained a massive response from around 13,000 fans. ROOT’s bassist IGORR joined as a guest guitarist before becoming a permanent member. Meanwhile, VLASA (Six Degrees of Separation) joined the band as a second guitarist and consequently three shows were performed together with NAPALM DEATH.
By late 2011, Hypnos got signed with the German label EINHEIT PRODUKTIONEN, and the fourth album entitled ‘Heretic Commando / Rise of the New Antikrist’ saw the light in April 2012 including a bonus DVD for the digi-pack edition. Recording duties were handled by the Norwegian sound engineer Børge FINSTAD (MAYHEM, IHSAHN, BORKNAGAR, ULVER). This was a breakthrough in the band’s history and quality reviews resulted in press like DECIBEL MAGAZINE (8/10), ROCKHARD, LEGACY, METALLIAN, TERRORIZER, EMP, and NUCLEAR BLAST. Furthermore Cili Chili, the Czech VODAFONE magazine featured an exclusive interview with Bruno concerning the band and the metal music scene. A video was shot for the track title ‘Inverted’, directed by Mejla BASEL who is responsible for MACHINE HEAD ‘Darkness Within’ and the Czech Academy Award winner MARKETA IRGLOVA ‘Crossroads’ videos. During 2012, Hypnos performed live with NAPALM DEATH, and later with VADER during the BACK IN BLACK tour.
In April/May 2014 band toured across east Europe together with AMON AMARTH.

OFFICIAL: The name Tony MacAlpine is synonymous with modern musical virtuosity. Whether performing as a solo artist, band member, session player, touring hired-gun, or as a producer, Tony MacAlpine continues to prove that he truly is one of rock’s most amazing and versatile musicians. He incorporates classical, jazz and fusion influences into the hard rock/metal genre on both guitar and keyboards.
In his 25 year career he has produced, written and arranged eleven solo instrumental studio albums. Tony has also released four albums with his jazz-fusion band CAB, three albums with his progressive rock band Planet X, and a number of other band projects. In addition, MacAlpine has contributed both guitar and keyboards to a long list of records by other artists.
Tony was born and raised in Springfield Massachusetts, and in his early years was a classically trained pianist and violinist. He began his musical education at age 5 as a piano major at the Springfield Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the direction of Marion Jensen for twelve years. Tony furthered his studies at HARTT College under the tutelage of Professor Raymond Hanson at the University of Hartford, Connecticut.
At age 12, Tony picked up the guitar. He was later “discovered” in the pages of Guitar Player magazine by Mike Varney in 1984, and became a leader in the neoclassical guitar virtuoso movement of the mid to late 80s. MacAlpine was possibly the first new rock guitar instrumental artist of the 80s to break 100,000 units in the USA. His debut album Edge Of Insanity (1986) and sophomore release Maximum Security (1987) are cited by countless guitarists as major influences. Tony performed guitar and keyboards on Edge Of Insanity (with Billy Sheehan on bass and Steve Smith on drums), and all instruments (with the exception of drums by Deen Castronovo and Atma Anur) on Maximum Security, highlighting his musical dexterity.
MacAlpine continued his extraordinary output into the 90s, with critically acclaimed releases Freedom to Fly (1992), Madness (1993), Premonition (1994) and Evolution (1995), which all remain among his discography’s best sellers.
In the late 90s, Tony joined forces with Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Billy Idol) and Virgil Donati (Steve Vai, Scott Henderson) to form progressive rock band Planet X, regularly touring Europe and South America. In 1999, bassist Bunny Brunel (Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock) tapped MacAlpine to join his jazz-fusion band CAB, along with drummer Dennis Chambers (John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana) and keyboardist Brian Auger (Tony Williams, Jimi Hendrix). This lead to the release of their self-titled album in 2000, and their GRAMMY-nominated CAB2 album in 2001. Two further CAB albums followed and the band toured the world, including Europe, Asia and Russia.
Shortly after, Tony was invited to join the band of fellow guitar virtuoso Steve Vai (along with Billy Sheehan on bass) where he played both guitar and keyboards, often doubling Vai’s formidable leads on both instruments. Tony performed and toured the world with Vai for seven years, playing to hundreds of thousands of people, and appearing on the certified double-platinum DVD Live At The Astoria, London, along with the G3’03 Live In Denver and G3 Live In Tokyo DVDs.
In 2006, Shrapnel Records celebrated Tony’s 20 year career with “Collection – The Shrapnel Years” – an album containing some of his hottest musical moments — comprised of aggressive rock and fusion compositions which highlight Tony’s incredible technique and melodic flair. These tracks contain standout performances by some of the greatest musicians in progressive music, including drummers Steve Smith and Deen Castronovo as well as bassists Billy Sheehan and Tony Franklin and other world class players.
In 2007, Tony was the featured guitarist for French pop legend Michel Polnareff’s highly successful comeback tour in France, playing to over half a million people during the tour’s three month run. A special performance of this event was televised across France. He also appeared in the 2008 award-winning motion picture Crazy: The Hank Garland Story making a cameo as Wes Montgomery.
His new self-titled album is due out on June 21, 2011 and marks a highly anticipated return to solo work. It features 12 blistering tracks of MacAlpine on 7 and 8-stringed guitars, keyboards, bass and programming, along with appearances from drum legends Virgil Donati and Marco Minnemann. Described by MacAlpine as his best work to date, the album is destined to again set the bar for guitarists everywhere.
Tony endorses Ibanez guitars, Hughes & Kettner amplifiers, EMG pickups, Ernie Ball strings, Source Audio pedals, and Toontrack software.
Tony likes motorcycles. He lives in Pasadena, CA.

interview: Lelahell
The Algerian death metal indefatigables Lelahell are on the march again, working on a new album and they also are getting ready to head to play shows in Europe. This publication contacted the band to get the scoop on the band’s activities. The interview deals with the ups and downs of being a metal band, and in this case a band in Algeria. In addition, the band offered its views on life in Algeria in general and other broader topics like economics, politics and religion, which makes for a very interesting read. The band’s recordings so far are: Al Intihar (2012) and Al Insane... The (Re)Birth of Abderrahmane (2014). The new album will be called Alif.
Hello, how is life in Algeria for Lelahell in 2017? What can you tell us about the new album Alif? All the recording is finished, correct?
First of all thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to talk about my band and my music in this interview. Life is quite in Algeria for Lelahell in 2017! We are preparing our new album Alif which is in the mastering process. Each Lelahell release is conceptually linked to the character of Abderrahmane, yet focusing on another evolutionary step—another chapter in his own book. Our new album "Alif" is now focusing on Abderrahmane's first steps in his new life, just like a child learning to speak, walk, learning about the world around him. Yet this is full of foes and fears, that's why Abderrahmane needs to save himself from those dangers.
May will be a very interesting month for Lelahell. The band will play Incineration Fest in the U.K. and do several shows in France. This is very positive for Lelahell!
Those shows belong to the Alif tour from 10 to 24th May (8 countries, 14 or 15 shows) to promote our upcoming album. We played many shows in Europe and we will continue to spread the name of Lelahell all around the globe!
I’m sure that Lelahell would like to play in Europe more because there is a lot support for metal music in Europe. What are the main obstacles that prevent Lelahell from playing more in Europe?
Yeah, we would like to play more in Europe and also in all countries of the world. Lelahell is an underground band that means that the main obstacle for playing overseas is the financial aspect because we have to pay for travel (ticket plane) and also van and sometimes rent backline. So if it is not a tour or a big festival it doesn’t really make a sense to spend so much money for one or two small gigs.
Lelahell’s vocalist and bassist, Lelahel the man, is the founder of the band in 2011. He has many years of experience in other bands like Neanderthalia and Carnavage. Who else are the other members of the band at the moment? Nihil (bass) and Slaveblaster (drums) have been part of the band, but I don’t know if they are still in it.
Nihil (bass) has left the band in 2014 after Al insane tour for personal reasons, and Slaveblaster (drums) left the band in 2016. The actual bass player is Ramzy Curse who is very well known in the local scene because he play in more than 6 different bands and he is very talented! For drums we have a sick and crazy non-human session drummer (you will know more about it soon)!!!
Has Lelahell become more known in northern Africa because the band already has two previous recordings? How’s the Algerian metal scene? Some people often talk about northwest Africa as the Maghreb, as a region: Morocco, Algeria, Lybia, Tunisia, so on and so forth. Does Lelahell have communications with metal bands from those countries?
To be honest I can’t answer to your question, I don’t know if Lelahell is more known in North Africa after those 2 releases because we don’t have too much connection with the other North African scenes, but we know that we got a good fan base in France because when we made our crowdfunding campaign for our new album the majority of contributions came from there.
About Algeria actually we can say that there are some good promising bands that need to work and produce albums. After that we can pretend to have an Algerian Metal Scene!
To be honest we don’t have a lot of contacts with the metal scene from neighbors countries, we just sometimes spent our holidays there. Some years ago we had many friends from Morocco and Tunisia but most of them have stopped playing music.
Does Lelahell have an interest in playing in other scenes in Africa, like in South Africa and Botswana?
In the past we got many offers from South Africa, we also get an offer from Botswana from Tshomarelo the guy behind the band Overthrust who is organizing a festival called “Overthrust Winter Metal Mania Fest 2017” on Friday 26 May 2017 and Saturday 27 May, but we have to pay for travel costs which are 5 times more expensive than the travel costs to Europe! And the same goes for South Africa.
In your opinion, how does the political situation in your country and region affect the metal music scene in Algeria?
When you see the metal scene of a country it reflects the economic and political situation of the country. This music was born in UK and USA in 60s, in that period those two countries were considered as the richest and the most politically stable countries in the world. The metal music is like a fish that needs aquatic environment to survive. The right equipment, the right venues, committed people, good living. In Algeria the actual political situation is uncertain; we don’t really know how all that will evolve. Added to that the expensive cost of life and the stressful days. The Algerian people move to other countries to find quiet and to live a better life.
Algeria had to fight really hard to be independent from France. Yet, after independence it was not happy times, was it? There has been civil war; extreme Islamist groups like the Islamic Salvation Front. There has been terrorism and massacres. In your opinion, what is it that you would like to see happen in Algeria? Do you think that people are tired of extremist and terrorist groups and also tired of the corrupt politicians? Would you like to see more democracy and more tolerance without violence in Algeria? Is that possible? Are there political parties that propose democracy, peaceful resolution of conflicts and that reject the method of political violence?
In 1962 after the independence it was the golden age: small population, strong economy, cultural diversity. In 1992 the F.I.S (Islamic Front of Salvation) won the legislative elections, but the government didn’t accept that the people voted for the FIS, so they cancelled those elections. And after that many Islamist radicalist groups committed many crimes (massacres, bombs, tortures,…) to access to power . We call that period the black decade.
Since 15 years the situation is quieter, but the economic situation is getting worse and worse. There is also a lot of corruption and no freedom of expression. We are tired of this situation; we don’t know where the real exit is!
There is no opposition; all political parties are supporters of the government, so we don’t believe in democracy anymore.
As we all know, there is terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, in Turkey and other places where Islam is a predominant religion. In Europe and in the U.S., and other places, some people have become suspicious of Muslims because of the ongoing violence in many countries. Some people suspect that many North African and Middle Eastern peoples who say they are “moderate Muslims” have secret sympathy for jihad, violence, suicide bombings, sharia law, killing Christians, atheists and gays. There are also some people who really support terrorist methods and Islamism. You live in Algeria and your country has experienced war and terrorism. What would you like to say to metalheads in the United States about terrorism and the problem of terrorism in Islamic countries and also in Western countries?
In the 90s during the terrorism period, when we were travelling abroad (Europe and USA) people were treating us like terrorists. They expected that all Algerian are terrorists! This is what the people were watching in the medias in that period!
Stop believing those bulls## medias! You will never understand the main purpose of those terrorist acts! What is happening in Europe and USA have nothing to do with Islam.
Metal music often critiques religion and many metalheads in the West do not believe in religion because of the extremism associated with religion. What is your personal opinion about the extremism, violence and intolerance that takes place in Islamic countries in the name of religion?
Like all other religions, Islam promotes peace, love and harmony /among the people.) The word Islam is derived from the Arabic word Salam (peace). Islam condemns the killing or even the persecution of people. Attacks on civilians around the world by such groups cannot be justified by any religion. It is strongly condemned in all religions, including Islam. Several persons have used terrorism to implement their own agenda, issues or beliefs. None of them represent true religion.
Thanks for your answers and time. Do you have any more news about your band?
As you said before expect a lot of news from Lelahell during the month of May, and don’t forget like our FB page and stay brutal!
