BARQUE OF DANTE remembers this very important date in history: the great explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus reaches the Americas!!!

October 12, 1492: Christopher Columbus's first expedition makes landfall on San Salvador Island in the Caribbean

Christopher Columbus lands in the Americas on October 12, 1492 connecting two parts of the world that did not know each other. This single event changed human history forever. Before 1492, people in Europe, Asia, and Africa knew nothing about the Americas, and native people in the Americas knew nothing about them. Plants, animals, and foods moved across the ocean. American foods like potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and chocolate moved to Europe and Asia, feeding millions and growing the world's population. In return, horses, cows, wheat, and coffee came to the Americas. Trade exploded across the Atlantic Ocean. Ships carried goods, silver, and people across the sea, creating the very first truly global economy and kicking off modern science, travel, and mapmaking. Christopher Columbus was a intrepid navigator whose bold 1492 transatlantic voyage permanently linked the Old World and New World, fundamentally altering the course of human history.
