How to Promote Your Band: Tips from Dewar PR

Dewar PR on Facebook has been posting helpful tips for promoting your band. If you are a musician or plan to be in a band, it is likely that these tips are going to be useful to you. Below are some samples.
Next on the things you need to have in place prior to starting PR:
Prior to starting your campaign (Or when beginning) you should figure out any advertising that you want to get done. Advertising is a key thing, in order to help drive sales. *Also* in some European physical magazines, they won't even consider covering you unless an ad is purchased. So, if there is a particular publication you *really* want to get a placement in in Europe that is print, find out if an ad is needed. It sucks this is the case, but it is what it is.
If you don't want to pay big bucks for a print ad (And I don't blame you), your best bet is to get some ads online with a reputable place like The Blastbeat Network (Who do a phenomenal job), at a site like Ghost Cult Magazine or even just doing Facebook ads yourself. Either way, you should get some ad money set aside, specifically for an online campaign so you can drive traffic to your Bandcamp/Store/Spotify. PR builds awareness and it has to be followed up with advertising and sales.
That's it for today more tomorrow!
Next on items you need to have ready prior to starting PR:
Someone in the band assigned to be the contact point between the PR and the band.
This is extremely important. I don't know how many times I've done PR for a band where I've had contact point with multiple members and gotten conflicting directions. When you hire a PR you need to make sure there is *one* person who is the PR's contact point, otherwise things can get extremely confused.
For example, I've had situations where I'll be told the band wants to release a certain single and then get conflicting info an hour later from another band member. I'll also get asked to send a press release with certain information and then later be given shit by another member.
Things get confusing and messy awful quick *unless* you have on specific person assigned to act on behalf of the band.
That's it for today, more tomorrow!
Next in the steps of what you need to have ready prior to starting PR: Any videos you plan to have released..
The reason why this is important is because then the PR has an idea of what message you are trying to convey.
In addition, I've also had it where a band has sent me a video mid campaign that was impossible to get placements for due to either low quality or excessive violence. While I realize it isn't always feasible to have the video ready ahead of time, if possible try to have it ready prior to working with a PR.
Also realize that if you have excessive violence/nudity or other controversial images in the video it could be next to impossible to land a major placement. I've actually been turned down for video premieres due to the video being too graphic.
That's all for today, more tomorrow!
