review: Angel Martyr -- speed metal from Italy
Angel Martyr
Nothing Louder Than Silence
Iron Shield Records
Feb. 26th 2021
Metal Archives shows this heavy/speed band beginning in 2006 as Wraith'sing, but not doing much until 2010 when they gave themselves a new, much better name. A demo in 2014 and an EP in 2015 got the ball rolling. The debut album Black Book: Chapter One came out in 2017. The Italians return with their sophomore work. It is ten tracks in a bit over an hour. Angel Martyr is that band the fans can count on for fast, shredding, and high vocals in a street metal way. The band prefers a bit of a sinister style to go along with their songs. Even though they go fast, they do not tend to paint themselves into a corner with the speed, which is an indispensable element for them. For that reason, they find good ways to create other moods while always remembering to keep the pedal to the metal. Credit to them for finding a balance in that respect. Fans looking for melody and soloing to go along with the speed should take note. They add melody and shredding to the speed, which often is near-thrash. The sound quality is good, and it is probably too clean and perfect some old-school-minded fans who prefer their speed metal a bit rawer, in a more traditional way. The last thing to mention is the vocals, which are gritty, blues/rock-based rowdy high notes.
