The British-born singer Tony Mills has been riding the rock and roll crazy roller coaster for 40 years. For fans of classic heavy metal, he is perhaps most known for his time with the long-running Norwegian band TNT (1982-present) from 2006 (or 2007) to 2013, and his singing on three studio albums. This is apparently the last studio album that he will make, especially considering the news that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. This new album Beyond the Law is one those works in which every song sounds like a hit single, with wonderful instrumentation by longtime friends and collaborators, and singing that classic rock fans appreciate. The genre flows between anthem heavy rock and melodic heavy metal, with big hooks and big choruses.
The album tells the story of Bonnie and Clyde, the notorious U.S. criminals in the 1930s that captured the imagination of the population due to the news coverage at the time. Musically, the album features the range of styles for which Mills has been known. Songs like “FB,” “Beyond the Law,” and “Gunfire” are classic-style uptempo numbers loaded with ear-friendly vibes, but in general the entire work features bouncy heavy rock, good-time vibes; and only “Bonnie’s Farewell” is the ballad that features that smooth, cool saxophone.
The production is clean and clear as fans of melodic heavy rock would expect. The rhythm section is grooving, and the guitar works so well the blues-based riffs for a great cross section of rocking and grooving, and lots of melodies. Vocally, the singing is, as expected, that of the heavy rock/heavy metal music giants. The singing is a main attraction for fans that want songs to remember and for singing along. This genre is generally associated with fans that demand great, awesome singing, and this is certainly that.
