Check out "Orb" from this anonymous prog entity's self-titled album. Willowtip Records so far is not saying who the members of this project are. Listen to the song and see what you think, but readers should know that the album is not a genre-specific recording, per se. They are not hiding that their music is a bit all over the place. They say: "COGNOS links extreme styles with atmospheric ambience, trying to find the balancing point where Gojira meets Vangelis, Peter Gabriel embraces Coroner or even where Enya converses with Opeth. With a possible loose resemblance to Devin Townsend." One song is not necessarily a full representation of the various sides of their sound, but it's a good insight in the mix of influences bubbling under the name of COGNOS. Expect something along the lines of melodic progressive extreme metal with both growling and singing.

BIZARRE - obscurantist death from Spain

Old-school Spanish deathsters BIZARRE are streaming two songs from their October 2021 album Invocation Codex. This is traditional, international old-school death with a style and sound that fans of the genre around the world immediately understand as a headbanging, no-experimentation, no-weirdness execution of extremity. NOLTEM - atmospheric melodic extreme metal from Connecticut, USA

Atmospheric melodic extreme band NOLTEM now has two songs streaming from their full-length Illusions in the Wake scheduled for early October 2021. It looks like they previously did an EP in 2015. They probably have a lot more history that will come out later because they seem to have had a gap of 10 years between 2005 (their first demo) and 2015 of no recordings, according to the information on Metal Archives. In 2021 audiences should expect music that emphasizes atmopherics and melancholic vibes, with growling (not shrieked) vocals, and a type of sad, melodic black metal aesthetics in the songwriting. The music is not particularly slow, and certainly not super slow, although the band prefers a moody type of sound. Some people might call this atmospheric melodeath or atmospheric melodic black metal, and if you split the difference, they'd both be correct. In fact, don't worry about the category. As long as you are interested in brooding, pleasant, ear-friendly songwriting, NOLTEM should be an enjoyable listening experience, whether the music is slowing down a bit or speeding up to blasting black metal velocities.

Currently the Australian dissonant extreme metal band NORSE is streaming three songs from the new album Ascetic, their fourth full-length album, and eigth overall, including their EPs. Essentially an unmelodic or even antimelodic form of prog extreme sounds, NORSE features left-field, sideways and even purposefully annoying guitar work/sounds that challenge the listener's attention. Lutharö - Canadian melodic death metal album in October

The time for the full-length album Hiraeth by Canadian melodic death metal band Lutharö is not too far away now. Incarnadine seems to be what they used to be named until 2014 when they changed their name to Lutharö. They did an EP as Incarnadine, and in 2015 they did another EP as Lutharö. Then they had another EP in 2018 and one more in 2020. They are ready with a full-length album to be released on October 15th, 2021. Lutharö features thrashy guitar work, with melodies, shredding, and growling and melodic vocals, all within catchy songs that fans of melodic death metal will be pleased to hear. They have one music video from the album now and tomorrow they will have a second music video for the song "To Kill Or To Crave."

Tentation - denim-and-leather French bandits stream two new songs

Back in 2015 the French act Tentation caught some people's attention with their interpretation of legacy-style heavy metal with a 24-minute self-titled recording. They did a couple of singles in 2018, but overall it felt like there was supposed to be an album soon after 2015. That did not happen. Some of us were left wondering what happened. No doubt, they must have run into some problems, as bands do, especially newer bands as they try to find their way in the business of metal music. Well, the wait is over. The full-length album is now a reality. After having heard the entire work, we can say that everything sounds as it should. Melodic singing in French, the big traditional heavy metal riffs, the galloping rhythms, and the songwriting based around the idea of anthems and rockers. The two songs on Bandcamp are a good illustration of what Tentation sounds like.

Alpha Boötis - the empire of Space Disco Synth Metal strikes back

What is space disco synth metal? It is Alpha Boötis! Listen to the three songs on Bandcamp ahead of the September 24th, 2021 official release date. They say about themselves: "Space Disco Synth Metal with operatic vocals, epic sci-fi stories and powerful production. Alpha Boötis' music aims to take you on a journey through the stars and the eons. For fans of power metal, synthwave and progressive rock!"

By the way, this is not joke music and it is not a bunch of nonsense. It is composed well, and it is something like fun instrumental prog rock, if you will. Is that possible? Can prog music ever be fun for casual listeners? Maybe. Maybe Alpha Boötis is a bit closer to doing it. The three songs you will hear are instrumental, just FYI. There are melodic vocals on the last song on this recording. The last song is a Gojira cover. Of course, it doesn not sound like Gojira. With that song, Alpha Boötis shows that they are something like a contemporary version of Pink Floyd, the space prog rock elements of Pink Floyd.

Of course, the problem that Alpha Boötis might have after people hear the song with vocals is that the people will want more. It's a normal question from casual listeners: "Why don't y'all just do more of that? Your vocals sound pretty good, and fit the music well."

Anyway, if you are up for something a bit different, some fun, some proggy, then Alpha Boötis could be for you.

Siren's Rain - Washington folk new album in Oktober

Washington state, USA folk artisans SIREN'S RAIN are now at the village's gate with their full-length album Rise Forth scheduled for October. Here in Washington they play locals shows, around the villages of Tacoma and Seattle. While waiting for the new music, listen below to their previous two EPS. Watch their Facebook page for when they have more information available. FYI: The new album continues their folk metal sound of soft and heavy combinations, with gruff and melodic vocals. The sound quality is good, and audiences into folk metal in general would be advised to put this album on their to-do list. The album is firmly planted in the folk metal genre, like ELUVEITIE and KORPIKLAANI and all those state fair Oktoberfest beer drinking medieval-modern songsters.
