review: Old Roger's Revenge
Old Roger's Revenge
Vengeance of Blackbeard
Pavement Entertainment

I think I imagined pirate-themed music, and this is not that, if by the term we mean a sort of fun-loving sound and songs about the seas, ahoy matey and treasure. The Italian band is, depending on what label you like, “sludge,” “doom” and/or “stoner,” but none of that tells us what the music does. The guitar sounds like doom (heavy, thick, big, simple riffs), yes, but the music styles have more variation than doom. This is like doom for doom fans that might enjoy a heavy stoner sludge band taking a few more chances by dipping their feet in some speedier tempos at times and by using growling in some songs, all to the point that some isolated songs may even give the impression that this is not 100% orthodox doom. Of course, that’s correct. It’s not orthodox doom. If the listener truly wants 100% slowpoke doom, then this is not it, but doom fans that would like to hear a bit of variety could really get a kick out of the extreme growls, some of the moshing parts, the melodic guitar parts, and the spicy variety that the group likes to pepper into their dish of doom.
