In this segment, Seamus takes us to when he started doing the show back in the 90s, and what that time was like for him.
Hey, Seamus, is it really true that you have been doing your show Excuse All the Blood for 18 years? So, for 18 years you have been going to radio station and playing metal music, is that correct? Did I hear that right on your show the other day?
I've been on KAOS for 18 years but Excuse All the Blood has been on for 16. I initially cohosted a show called The Pit-that started off purely death metal and then the other hosts wanted to play local bands like Faustus and Aggression Core so more Pantera-y stuff. I wanted to get heavier so started Excuse All the Blood.
People who don't know imagine that you get paid money for being on the radio. But that's not the case, is it? So, what is your motivation for doing the show for so long? Do you ever regret having a such a weekly responsibility? What kind of events how you missed due to having to do the show every week? concerts, birthdays, holidays? Does doing the show prevent you from doing something like visiting friends and family in other parts of the country?
I've done the show a long time since it's really fun! I never planned to have a show in the first place, it just happened and then I enjoyed it so still do it. I've been doing it half my life. I was 18 when I started and I'm 36 now. We don't get paid, no. It's totally volunteer. I get paid in fun! I don't regret doing it at all-if I need to miss a show I can. The woman before me (her show is psychedelic, called Music From the Underground) will do the first hour of my show) and then the guy after me (his EDM show is That Greedy Beat) will do the second hour. I make a CD for each of them and write down each song so they know what they're playing. I'll miss a show in November since I'll be in Vegas for KISS-the show will still be done, just without me that night.
There have been some other metal shows on the station but not many. Around 1999 there was a black metal show done by the guy who put out the old Descent zine-VERY cool guy. We talked about Dissection a lot. Then there was a decade without another metal show. Around 2010 there was a power metal show for a month or two. Last year there was a kick ass show called 'Heaviest Matter of the Universe'-he played newer bands that don't do much for me but he was super cool and knew his stuff well. He sat in with me a few times and then filled in a couple times as well. I remember playing him Autopsy.
Going back in time. You started the show in 1996. That was a low point for death metal. So, were you into black metal more? Do you remember what you thought about death metal in 1995 or 1996?
In 1996 I don't think I really had a preference on black metal or death metal. I probably liked black metal more but it was still just metal to me. I was really into more melodic bands. I loved Sentenced-'Down' had just come out. I love that album. I liked In Flames-this was 'The Jester Race' era. Neither of those bands were the least bit popular. In Flames hadn't even played America yet. I was at their first ever American show-Milwaukee Metalfest in 1999. I was into Moonspell and Hypocrisy (Abducted just came out) and was super into a San Francisco band called Release. Check out their 'End of Light' record. They used to open for everyone! I was obsessed with At the Gates.
As for death metal, it was a darker time. David Vincent left Morbid Angel, Obituary was getting stale. Napalm Death was getting progressive (for them). I bought all the CD's but focused more on bands like Incantation. This was before 'Diabolical Conquest'. I remember completely losing it when I first heard 'Onward to Golgotha'. Cannibal Corpse put 'Vile' out in 1996 which is my favorite album of theirs. I was so into Broken Hope-'Loathing' was about to come out. I remember listening to 'Repulsive Conception' while riding my bike to school-12th grade. I was into Vader's 'De Profundis'. I listened to Acheron's 'AntiGod AntiChrist' CD all the time! I saw them at Milwaukee in 1997. Although it came out a few years prior, I listened to the Disincarnate CD a lot. I was way into James Murphy because he was in Testament. The more mainstream bands might have been iffy back then but there were still some great albums coming out.
