Featuring members from Elvenking,  Evenoire, and Sound Storm, Italy’s SHADYGROVE journey into our primordial and mythological past for inspiration. Like musical time travelers or aural archaeologists, they have trawled eras beyond most bands’ inspiration to create music from the soul…for the soul!

Theirs is an acoustic heaviness that is truly original and special. It’s as though, like the myths and legends that inspire them, SHADYGROVE have always been with us, in the Celtic Otherworld, just waiting for us to look with our hearts rather than our eyes. SHADYGROVE make music as fresh as tomorrow’s dawn.

Violinist Fabio ‘Lethien’ Polo describes SHADYGROVE’s sound as “folk, ethnic, acoustic Celtic pop. We are trying to bring the popular music of our regions, mixed with Celtic and Medieval music, to a more modern view without altering its soul. We write very evocative songs to guide the listener on a journey to where nature still rules.”

Singer Lisy Stefanoni explains SHADYGROVE’s inspirations. “We love the different styles of folk music and the various approaches of the main musicians. We also love the Celtic music. In the metal genre, folk metal inspires us the most. We listen to bands like Eluveitie, In Extremo, also symphonic projects like Ayreon and The Gentle Storm. GATECREEPER Announces North American Co-Headlining Tour With Full Of Hell

GATECREEPER will take on a North American co-headlining tour with recent Relapse signees Full Of Hell this summer. Presented by Revolver Magazine, GATECREEPER will join The Sweltering Ecstasy Tour on May 28th in Phoenix, Arizona following their appearance at the Modified Ghost Festival III in Vancouver, British Columbia on May 24th. From there, the pair will crush skulls together for three weeks, the tour concluding on June 17th in San Antonio, Texas. See all confirmed dates below.

Infernal Legion has a new album.

Biography

WE ARE AN ANTI CHRISTAN BAND NO MORE NO LESS Infernal Legion was formed under the name 'Eviscerate' on January 19 1999 by Josh Smith, Justin Thomas and Eric Armstrong. They had decided that they were ready to unleash unholy blasphemy on the cold northern town of Lakewood, Washington. After about a month, Eviscerate recruited guitarist John Anderson to play in the group. Eviscerate wrote a couple songs, but wasn't going very quickly until they obtained guitarist Doug Stern later that year. The group also parted ways with Josh Smith and Doug Stern took over on vocals.

On February 22-23 2000 Eviscerate recorded their self titled album with Jesse O'Donnell. Only 250 cassette tapes were made and no more will ever be produced. On April 22 2000 Eviscerate played their first show. Many more shows followed after that date. Guitarist John Anderson left Eviscerate immediately following the first show.

In November 2000, Eviscerate changed their name to Infernal Legion, in light of the common usage of the former name by other bands. The name Infernal Legion came from a group that disbanded prior to Eviscerate's forming. One of the members of the first Infernal Legion was Doug Stern, who carried the name over after joining the second Infernal Legion.

In 2001 Infernal Legion re-obtained Josh Smith for vocals and Andrew Sison to play bass guitar.

On July 28-29 2001 Infernal Legion recorded 'Angelicide', also with Jesse O'Donnell. The album was finally finished and released on December 01 2001. Since then Infernal Legion has sold many copies of 'Angelicide' and played many shows, locally and abroad. One of the highlights of the groups' tenure was playing at the Milwaukee Metalfest on July 27 2002.

In July 2003, Andrew Sison left the group and was replaced by aspiring bass guitarist Rick Powell from Azimuth. Late in 2003, The Infernal Legion finished recording 'Your Prayers Mean Nothing' and has signed a contract with Moribund Records to produce the album and to record and produce two more following its release. In April 2005, Infernal Legion embarked on their first full fledged tour.

The New Mythology Vol.1, REVENGER's second studio release, is a five-song EP that expands on the band's aggressive thrash style with tracks that are more technical, visceral and direct than debut album To The Wolves. Formed in 2012, the band introduces some key members that shape the sound and vibe of this EP, which is more calculated and driven than before. Heavy guitar rhythms punctuated by a consistent thrash pulse breaks only when the groove requires and marks REVENGER's particular style. The lyrics and gritty death
vocals also bring out the rage and bitterness of the subject matter which, for this EP, is slightly more conceptual and inspired by comic books and how today's mythology could become tomorrow's dogma.

With the intent of bringing together technical thrash metal and gritty groove riffs, Revenger was born in 2012 through the hands of guitarist Jean-Pierre Poulin and drummer Chris Warunki. The pair had written music together before and the combination of their styles and personalities was a natural experiment. In March 2014, Revenger debuted in Vancouver to warm reviews. 

Their first independent album To the Wolves came out in September 2014 with Jordan Knute (lead guitar), Greg Cavanagh (vocals) and Darryl Greer (bass). In early 2015, Revenger's lineup evolved to include Julia Geaman (drums) and Andrew Bailey (vocals). The following year was largely focused on woodshedding, playing local and regional shows/festivals alongside renowned bands such as Havok, Beyond Creation, Archspire, Tengger Cavalry, Stryker and Unleash the Archers. 

2016 saw the introduction of Sean Parkinson on guitar (replacing Jordan Knute), and the interesting switch from guitar to bass for founder and main song writer JP Poulin. Ending the year with a 5-song EP written and ready to be recorded in early 2017, Revenger is ready to tour extensively and work tirelessly to get their music out to the world.

In my opinion, one important way that you can tell if a band is good is whether the music is strictly for the fans of a particular genre or not, or whether the music transcends the limits and is good enough for everyone in general, not just the obsessive collectors who must have every thrash or death doom or obscure NWOBHM or slam gore brutal album that they come across. Furthermore, if a band manages to gain fans who would not normally care about that specific genre, that’s even better.

Necrophobic is black metal. Wait a minute now. I understand what you’re thinking. “Oh, no, not another homemade poorly recorded album by some person in the middle of nowhere in Idaho or Switzerland.” Perhaps you’re saying, “No thanks! I don’t need another cave recording by some reclusive dude who is trying supposedly to capture the sound of their local forest.” You’re thinking you don’t need to read another hyped review and then hear another mediocre or worse black metal band.

First of all, this is a professional recording. It is meant to sound good. The band began some 30 years ago, and their name shows where their minds were at the time in the 1980s, inspired by the dark thrash of the time. Depending which era you’re talking about, some people might tell you that this is a death or black or death/black metal band. The new album, more than ever, finds the band perfecting its sound, showing that they are at their best when they focus on their brand of dark melodic black metal, built upon the classics, regardless of whether it is a Swedish, British, German, American, Brazilian or Norwegian foundational work of thrash, death, black or even traditional heavy metal itself.

I’m not going to dissect the album in detail, but I will tell you about two things that are examples of the band at its best. One thing that has happened to the band after collective decades under their bullet belts is that they have lost any fear of limits in the sound. They are confident and comfortable in their own skin, and that could not be more obvious in the soloing. They are not afraid to make the music memorable with traditional soloing that shows a lot effort put into the melodies and the feel. I mean traditional soloing in the sense that it has melodies that any metal fan can recognize and welcome. I can tell you that some of these solos are so shamelessly catchy, as if they decided to go all out and show that they are not afraid to let out the guitar hero. Now the guitar hero has been unleashed and this is what freedom sounds like.

The second thing I want to explain is the vocals. Extreme metal vocals, depending on the band, might sound good, but sometimes it seems like angry screaming, yelling and cupping the microphone is the normal way of doing things. The vocals might not necessarily contribute that much to the songs, and it can often be a case of needing to have a warm body at the front of the stage.

To hear a different way of doing things listen to this album. It’s black metal vocals, but it is pleasant on the ears. How is that possible? I guess that’s the difference in professionalism. If it were easy to do, everyone would have figured it out by now, right? Must all black metal vocals be irritatingly shrieked? Necrophobic is evidence and an argument to the contrary.
