Species Splicer in Everett, WA this Friday
Species Splicer will be recording for a video in Everett, Washington state, this Friday, April 14: “This Friday at Anchor Pub in Everett we will be getting footage of our set for an upcoming music video! This is a FREE SHOW with a stacked line up featuring Groundfeeder and Depths of the Sunset!”
This Washington state band is relatively new, it seems. Metal Archives says that they started in 2016. Their name started popping up in some show announcements in the area, and now they have a recording of slamming, chugging rhythms and low guttural vocals. Right now, at this point, the band is focusing on bringing the heaviness and the brutality without any distractions.
This is a name-your-price recording; and the bands says: “The Ep boasts of slamming riffs accompanied by insanely brutal vocals. Based on a concept of a vile scientist hatching an abominable creature of alien, demon and human scum to reproduce destructive atrocities upon the multiverse.”

Wan is extreme metal fueled by beer and a tendency to get into fights at the local bar and getting arrested on days that end in the letter y. This band will be the first tell you that they are bastards and they don’t have any friends because of that. Let’s put it this way, they are not going to get any awards for friendship and congeniality any time soon or ever. One time the band got arrested on the day that they had a show and somehow they still managed to be released in time for their concert at a bar. True story.
The key words when dealing with Wan:
Venom. Bathory. Celtic Frost. Beer.
Wan is raw black metal workhorses and now they continue their history with the latest celebration of dirty extreme metal. Wan's all about taking the old Venom and Bathory spirit into the present day. Their previous two albums Wolves of the North (2010) and Enjoy the Filth (2013) indicated that the band was already enjoying life in hell. Wan has in mind a very specific sound: unpolished blasphemy like the early black metal in the 80s.
These Swedes say that they are terrible at promoting themselves because they are too busy getting drunk and picking fights with people at the bar or just getting into a fight with each other about which Bathory album is the best; and don’t even get them started about 90s Bathory and Quorthon trying to sing. Yuck.
They also say that they do not have digital distribution, so I’m not sure how you can get this album. Check out the Carnal Records website and see what you can do there, ladies and gentlemen.

NEWS: Paul O'Neill (1956-2017)
Paul O'Neill, producer known for Trans-Siberian Orchestra and his work with Savatage, died on Wednesday, April 5th, 2017. Savatage and TSO guitarist Chris Caffery issued the following statement.
OFFICIAL: When I was a teenager I used to hang out in the rock 'n' roll club scene of New York City. There was a club called L'Amour East that used to have a lot of national acts and I would pretty much go see every one! There was always this one guy there. I didn't know who he was but he was always there. He had long hair and would wander around in a leather jacket with a white shirt. He seemed pretty important, he wasn't in the bands but he was always with the bands. Later in the year when I was 17 I was hanging out at a club called Nirvana in New York City. I had met a couple different people that were managed by a company called Contemporary Communications. This company was formerly known as Leber & Krebs.They had managed just about every major rock 'n' roll band on the planet at the time. One of the people I ran into was the late great Allan Fryer from the band Heaven. I wound up getting an audition with the band and eventually got the gig. I remember walking into the offices of Contemporary Communications for the first time. All of a sudden I see that guy from the club! It was Mr. Paul Oneill. Paul managed and produced Heaven and my very first professional paycheck came from him when I was a 17-year-old kid.
33 years later I look back on my career and think of how lucky I am. How lucky I was to live just about every single dream I ever had as a kid about being a rock 'n' roll musician and a rockstar. The man who created that magic has passed away from us and the emptiness that I'm feeling cannot be described in words.
They always say they are moments in your life in which from that moment on things will never be the same. Meeting Paul was one of those moments and losing Paul is definitely one of those moments as well.
There are 1 million different things that I want to say right now. I can't really put them into words. I'm praying for his family, his daughter especially. Im praying for all of us in the TSO and Savatage family we lost our big brother, a mentor...our hero...our leader.
All Paul ever wanted to do was change the world through his music he did that and so much more.
Rest In Peace Paul.
It's time to catch up on that sleep you have been missing for the past 20 years...

Paul O'Neill (February 23, 1956 – April 5, 2017) was an American music composer, lyricist, producer, and songwriter.
A New York City native, the second of his parents' ten children, Paul O'Neill's music and literary influences, as well as his own artistic visions were well established before he began working full-time in the industry in his late teens. O'Neill began playing guitar with a number of rock bands in high school and quickly graduated to folk guitar gigs at downtown clubs. O'Neill took his first serious musical steps in the mid 1970s when he took his first progressive rock band, Slowburn, into Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios in New York City. It was there that he first met engineer Dave Wittman who had the ability to capture on tape the sounds O'Neill was hearing in his head. Paul ended up shelving the project because he was not happy with final results. (A habit Paul would repeat over the decades much to the frustration of his accountants.) However he has credited Slowburn's initial failure as one of the luckiest thing that could have ever happened to him for it gave him the opportunity to learn the recording and concert business from the inside out. All the little nuances of how you broke acts in America and Canada, which was different from, Europe, Asia but more importantly how to make your artist success last. In addition, touring the planet with some of the world's biggest bands gave him an insight not only to the how the music industry differed from country to country but also a better sense of history, peoples and finance than you could learn from books alone.
He landed a position at Leber-Krebs Inc., the management company that launched the careers of Aerosmith, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Ted Nugent, The New York Dolls, Scorpions and Joan Jett among others. Specifically, he worked as the personal assistant of manager David Krebs. In the 1980s, O'Neill became a large rock promoter in Japan, promoting every tour of Madonna and Sting done in that decade, as well the largest rock festivals done in Japan till that time with such acts as Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and Ronnie James Dio.
Among other bands, O'Neill helmed Aerosmith's Classics Live I and Classics Live II albums before beginning a fortuitous relationship with the band Savatage that led to conceptual pieces such as Hall of the Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, Streets: A Rock Opera and Dead Winter Dead. It also introduced him to Jon Oliva, Bob Kinkel and Al Pitrelli, as well as reconnecting him with legendary studio engineer Dave Wittman, who all became key original collaborators in O'Neill's grand vision – Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
"I wanted to take the very best of all the forms of music I grew up on and merge them into a new style," O'Neill says. "Basically I was building on the work of everybody I worshipped: the rock opera parts from bands like the Who; the marriage of classical and rock from bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Queen; the over-the-top light show from bands like Pink Floyd...I always wanted to do a full rock opera with a full progressive band and at least 24 lead singers.
O'Neill took the idea to Atlantic Records which, to his surprise, went for it and financed the creation of Romanov which was initially to be TSO’s first release. "We were very fortunate," he says. "It was one of the only labels left that still did an “old school” kind of artist development." My original concept was; "We were going to do six rock operas, a trilogy about Christmas and maybe one or two regular albums."
"Criss could play anything you could imagine. He could work a solo around a vocal without stepping on it, and he was one of the few guitarists who knew how to convey the emotion of the human voice with a guitar. He was a combination of the angst of Duane Allman on "Layla,’ the excitement of Jimmy Page, the emotion of Eric Clapton, the raw feel of Joe Perry and the dexterity of Eddie Van Halen or Allan Holdsworth."
However, when Romanov got temporarily put on the back burner, the first installment of the Christmas trilogy, Christmas Eve and Other Stories became TSO’s debut album. Fueled by the socially conscious single "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24", the album went double platinum. More platinum certifications followed with 1998’s The Christmas Attic, and the final installment of the Christmas trilogy, The Lost Christmas Eve in 2004. In the midst of completing the trilogy, TSO released their first non-holiday rock opera the gold certified Beethoven's Last Night.
But TSO really cemented its following in concert. The group hit the road in 1999, beginning an annual November–December extravaganza that O'Neill takes pride in being "as over the top as we can make it." "We have, two stages -- with pyro, light and lasers -- on both sides of the arena, as well as in the crowd and the best sound we can find...There's no second-class seats at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show. I want people to walk out of our shows speechless and...still not believing what they have seen was possible."
"We spend a lot of time planning," O'Neill confesses with a laugh, "and people are always telling me, 'Paul, stop writing and start recording!' It's working out great, though. I feel lucky that it's gone this long and that we get to do what we love for a living. The arts have incredible power, and with that comes incredible responsibility. Someone once said that if you want to change the world, don't become a politician -- write a book, write a great song. I believe in that, and that's what Trans-Siberian Orchestra is about."
"I've always believed that music has the power to transport and transform," O'Neill explained. "The original concept of Trans-Siberian Orchestra was how to make music have the most emotional impact. We always try to write melodies that are so infectious they don't need lyrics and lyrics so poetic that they don’t need a melody, but when you combine the two together they create an alloy where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Once those songs are woven together into a tapestry they create a story which gives each song a third dimension."
"That was so much in the spirit of Trans-Siberian Orchestra", O'Neill explains. "This is a group -- a constantly morphing group -- of extremely creative and talented individuals who are always trying to raise the bar of where a band can take its audience sonically, visually and emotionally. With that as our core ideal, the possibilities are endless."
O'Neill's death was announced in a brief note posted on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra website on April 5, 2017, which cited chronic illness. [Wikipedia]

Brazilian metal band Scatha has a new album. Read more about it below.
OFFICIAL: It's with great pleasure that we announce the release of our LP entitled "Take the Risk." This album represents the culmination of years of band, friendship and hard work. OFFICIAL: Scatha came together at the end of 2004 when Cíntia Ventania (Bass) met Julia Pombo (Guitar) and started a metal band. In mid 2005, Cynthia Tsai Yuen (Drums), Paula Leão (Guitar) and Rebecca Schwab (Vocal) joined the band, forming the first official lineup.
Scatha had their first show at the legendary “Garage”, a well known venue in Rio de Janeiro – Brasil. The band had a couple of songs (Breaking proofs and Own War) ready for this first gig. The performance was a big hit. The public loved them. They loved the energy and music of five young girls rocking out on stage, playing good old fashioned heavy thrash. After that, the band kept gigging in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo region. Always surprising the public, and continually stirring up curiosity about the band.
In 2007 Scatha welcomed Angélica Burns into the band as the new vocalist, and soon after released the 5 track demo "Keep Thrashing!" Featuring all original songs with English and Portuguese lyrics. the demo really showed the bands diversity.
Years went by, but they didn't give up the dream to record an album. In 2016 a new vocalist (O Lenhador/The Lumberjack) joined the lineup and the band recorded their first full length album called "Take the Risk" released in april 4, 2017.

Burning Witches is traditional heavy metal from Switzerland. The band is new and so far they have a single published and they have some songs online. They are working on making their name known for everyone who will bang their head with the fire of the burning heavy metal witches. They are just getting started. Below you can find out more about who they are.
OFFICIAL: The band Burning Witches was founded during spring 2015 in Brugg, beautiful Switzerland, by guitar player Romana Kalkuhl. It has always been her big dream to perform with a women's heavy metal band on stage. During the music university studies she already started her first group: ATLAS & AXIS with which she has already recorded two albums and played several concerts!
In 2015 Romana started to look for talented ladies for the new combo. Jeanine Grob (bass) a longtime friend, became the first official member. At a party on a festival Romana met Seraina Telli (singer) for the first time. It clicked right away betweens the two girls, on a musical and on a personal level. Seraina brought in many ideas and a lot of experience cause of her studies at the Music Academy and her band SURRILIUM. The guitarist and the singer became a great songwriting team right away!
Romana wrote her mate Schmier from DESTRUCTION/PANZER about her new project, he was interested in the new outfit and the ladies brought him onboard as a producer / consultant!
After an intensive search and different auditions, BURNING WITCHES found Lala Frischknecht the perfect drummer for the all chick metal band . Since summer 2015, the girls have been working hard on new material and in autumn 2015 they recorded the first three songs with VO Pulver at Little Creek Studio (PANZER / PRO PAIN / DESTRUCTION).
The search for the right band name was kind of easy, because if four crazy girls burn hard for Heavy Metal, they can only call themselves BURNING WITCHES.

The guitarist Al Joseph (U.S.) first came to the attention of this publication with the band The Great Gamble and the album Book I (2012, according to Metal Archives; on Bandcamp it says it was released in 2015 in that format), a serious and promising work of progressive metal, in the traditional style with melodic singing, but with quite a bit of crunch on the guitars. Today said band, unfortunately, is no longer active, but Al has continued working on his passion: progressive guitar. His first solo instrumental album is called Out in the Open (2013), a work that showed his songwriting abilities, combining thoughtful, melodic guitar with shredding. Nowadays he has several interesting plans in the works, as you will read in this introductory interview. At the end of the interview there are links to hear some of Al’s songs and to learn more about his biography and music. In the meantime, let’s begin the interview.
Al, can we begin with an update of your recent activities and your near-future plans? Have you been doing live shows, for instance? Where are you based at the moment and how has that city been for your music? Are there opportunities for your music?
Well I just recently moved to Los Angeles about a month ago from Boston, MA. Planning for that while working on my next solo record has been such a challenge, but I'm happy to say that I'm settling in just fine.
LA is definitely a better place for musicians. I'm in the final mastering stages of my new solo record which will be called All of Creation. I feel that this is my best work so far considering the songwriting and composition. I really feel that this album will cover a much wider palate of styles and grooves and I'm already having a lot of fun rehearsing for later gigs and appearances.
As far as shows go I'm setting that up with some friends in the states and across seas. There will be updates on my website after the release of the album.
How many albums have recorded so far and where can people hear them? I ask because Metal Archives has listed only one album of yours.
I released Out In The Open back in 2013. For my debut record it had some success, but after touring with my band we thought it would be better to recut the record with a full live band. We finished recording, but just couldn't find the right press to release it again. Seeing as it's been 3 years, it was just time to move on and cut a new record.
Who knows, we might revisit Out In The Open in the future.
What about instructional dvds? How many do you have so far?
I do quite a bit of work with Jam Track Central. Right now I have about 10 different products with JTC ranging from masterclass to demonstrations. I definitely plan on continuing down this road. Linking up with Jonny and the guys has been the single best move I've made for my career so far. These guys support their artists and take all 65 instructors with equal respect. Gotta love a company that does business like that. I couldn't be happier.
You have a band and it's called Al Joseph Group, correct? Who are the members of the band? Do you have a rotating cast of players or a steady line-up?
Because I just moved to LA, I have to search for a new cast and crew. I know the original members plan on making their way over at some point in time, but for now I'm going to patiently continue shopping for new musicians with rotation in mind till the band clicks just right.
That takes a lot of planning on my end. Making sure musicians get paid and don't have to worry about eating and sleeping is the toughest part of touring. So this time I think I'll reach out for help in that area and plan things more thoroughly.
Can you explain the objectives or mission of Jam Track Central? Do you have a specific role with JTC? I'm not sure that I understand what it is.
As for my role, I'm an artist. I simply use my talents to create products that our fans need. The guys that run JTC are 100% connected to our fanbase through running various surveys to gain feedback on how our fans are learning. Because of that our products have evolved into what they are today.
Jam Track Central was originally and still is a backing track company. But instead of just creating random tracks themselves they had the genius idea of calling upon legitimate artists like myself to create tracks and demonstrate how to play over them. This points the artist directly to their fan bases seeing that there's a high demand for quality tracks.
However, JTC has evolved into a site where musicians can learn as well, hence the Masterclass and 20 Lick Packages. It's a great way for artists to share their musical experiences with their fans, fund their various career endeavors, and gain worldwide exposure.
At this point in your career in 2016, what is your assessment of the development of your career as a professional solo guitarist? What achievements are you pleased with and what are some things that remain on your short list of things that you seek to do?
Well I would say that in this short time I've learned a great deal about how my fans see me as both a composer and musician. You see, as an aspiring guitarist growing up we have this picture in our heads as to what kind of guitarist we want to be seen as. A lot of us (I include myself) grow up trying to write the most wowing guitar lines for the musicians, neglecting key elements like song form and arrangement. We risk missing the mark of a true songwriter. But music even in the world of guitar is changing, it's evolving.
I'm glad I took the first step and put myself out there, continuing to release music because now I have a great deal of feedback from both fans of guitar music and the greater public. That is to say I now see my strengths from both sides. That's not to say that I don't cherish my roots as a guitar player, but it's my deep desire that instrumental music makes a greater impact on more than just guitar players.
I've become even less particular about the content of my solos concerning virtuosity and more sensitive to the vibes and emotions my lines give off. You'll see that in my next record for sure. Yes, it's still guitar music, but I'm excited to see the crowd’s reaction to the show we're planning to put on.
As far as the future is concerned I really want to gig and tour much more which is why I moved to LA. I enjoy educating people and sharing my musical experiences, but I feel like there's a side of myself I really need my fans to see. That side can and will only be seen on stage.
What are some specific obstacles that solo prog guitarists face in the music industry nowadays? Some of today's most successful guitarists established themselves decades ago, like Joe Satriani, Tony MacAlpine, Steve Vai and others in the pre-internet days, when the industry was set up differently. What are some things that you have discovered that you needed to tackle in order to move forward? Business aspects, social media, sponsors, equipment, the music press and its coverage, so on and so forth?
I'd say it's songwriting and business savvy.
Artists like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and many more had to do it outside the bedroom. No home studio camera with editing and 100 takes. I'm am very guilty of this Lol. For so long these artists have overcome the challenges of being a working musician. Not to say that those challenges ever went away, but at this point where they are the ones who manage these challenges, not the other way around. They have just become very aware and smarter over the years I'd say. Musicians these days I've found just don't understand or cherish the business mindset. I will go as far to say they fear it. I am always testing for this quality and have to say most just lack the tenacity.
Others think because they're very good at playing guitar they should "make it". It's all a balancing act, all the way up. You have to maintain your chops, but you also have to be open to putting out lots of music, receiving solid feedback from your fans and peers. Just because you have a unique sense of writing doesn't mean it's any good. You're fans decide that eventually as you grow with them. I've found those who possess the deep inner urge to connect emotionally with their audience usually have better results, whether pop star or virtuoso.
So with that being said surround yourself with successful people both business and musically. Learn how they talk, how they vibe, and take massive action.
You probably have told your story many times in interviews, but I have not read it anywhere. How did you get interested in playing an instrument and what do you remember how your interest in guitar started? Did you go to a concert or did you watch a video of a particular guitar player?
I've always been a musician. From the womb. I grew up playing in churches and with friends but it never became a true direction in my life until I ran into the music of my favorite artists.
To sum it up it was my first listen to Joe Satriani's Surfing With The Alien record. Just pure genius, from the songwriting and guitar playing all the way to the production. To this day I take notes on that album and just about every other record he's ever put out. The man still sells out theaters. If you want to make it as a guitar soloist, sit down and have coffee with this guy. (On my to-do list)
John Petrucci is another guy that set the bar high for me for obvious reasons. He's just a powerhouse and another amazing songwriter. I personally think he doesn't get enough credit for his songwriting. He's another example of someone with incredible skill but also through his work with Dream Theater, has a catalogue the size of Texas Lol.
And lastly, my journey continues with inspiration I receive from the guitar players of today. There's just too much to go around but I manage to keep up somehow Lol
I'm loving music at the moment!
This question is the most annoying to you, most likely: why have you chosen to go instrumental? Is there no room for singers in your music? Are there any circumstances in which you would be open to the idea of having singing in your music?
The funny thing about my career now is that I hit up JTC with the intention of bringing more fans to know my band The Great Gamble at the time. In fact, in that band I was the lead singer, so there was no reason to look for one. We've since then broken up so I just continued doing what I loved most. I'm not a singer, I'm a guitar player, but I'm not opposed to being in a band with a singer. In fact, I recently started a new band called The Atman Project in which we'll have a singer, a damn good one by the name of Josiah Baker. Amazing talent that guy and VERY business savvy which is very refreshing. But as for my solo music who knows what the future may hold. For now I prefer it strictly instrumental.
Do you feel a sense of freedom in doing your music without vocals? You don’t have to worry about whether someone will not like the singing style, you don’t have to make the music simpler with lots of choruses so that people understand it, you don’t have to get into current topics like personal, social or political problems/issues and other things like that. Do you feel like you have more freedom to let your guitar playing do the talking?
Wow, this is a great question. I am extremely picky when it comes to vocalists, actually. I don't usually care how they sound within reason, but how well they gel with the music. Most singers think the job is to just sing over the band as opposed to singing with the band. It's extremely irritating for me as someone who plays and actual instrument. Lol
But back to your question. As a guitarist I feel I want the freedom to "let it all out" on the guitar so to speak. But, with newer artists surfacing like David Maxim Micic and Jakub Zytecki having singers on their solo records, I'm starting to see that it's possible without being too corny. There are some solo artists out there I won't mention that tried it and for some reason I find they continue to contract some of the worst vocalists you could possibly imagine for a record. But It's hard to find that balance as a solo artist without becoming a "band". It just depends on the mentality.
I guess for the most part it comes down to the compositional style. I tend to want to keep things more simple when there's a singer involved and I usually play solos in particular spots in that situation. But I love playing the melody so much that I feel there will always be songs on my solo records that will feature only guitar as the "singer". If you gig with me a lot you'll know that it's usually simpler melodic lines I favor the most. There isn't much room for sexy vibrato in shred, so when I compose guitar music I make it a point to compose hooks way before solos.
I do write lyrics, though. I love it, actually. I'm not afraid to be controversial or touch on topics that may offend people. I'm not a particularly "nice" person in that regard Lol. Yes! Be on the lookout for my new solo record as I mentioned before. It will be called All Of Creation. I wasn't going to say this, but I'm featuring artists Marco Sfogli, Per Nilsson, and Jack Gardiner on this one so it should be a heavy hitter for you guys.
Also be on the lookout for my new band called The Atman Project at the moment. It will be very djent and Dream Theater influenced so I'm very excited to get started on that.
Lastly, I'm back online so gonna be teaching Skype lessons again for those who are ready to start getting to that next level!

NEWS: Vesuvian
The Seattle area extreme metal band Vesuvian (metalcore/deathcore/melodeath) has been active in the recent period, playing shows and issuing a recording. Find out more about them below. Listen to their music at the first link.
OFFICIAL: Now that we have had a moment to catch up with the world after the last two weeks of insanity, we would like to thank all that came out to support us on our march madness run in support of our first EP Lahar! First off, we would like to thank our tour brothers in Species Splicer that first run was super fun with them in tow great band with even better dudes, epic hangs were had! Secondly, it was amazing getting to play with all the different bands, artists and groups we got to play with have been amazing, all under the flag of metal for the most part, but they are insanely talented and diverse, shout out to you all! Antitheus, Corrupted Captivity, Depths of the Sunset, Freeze, Born Without Blood, our buddies in Chamber 6, The Desolate, Mistaken Existence, my new favorite metalcore band The Dead Horizon, SHANOA, Often Rotten, Blood And Thunder, Lethal Injektion, The Further, Mortal Enemy, and the awesome dudes who helped out singer play a show in his hometown, huge shout out to Colby Dees and Traitors Gate! This run was an amazing and humbling experience, while we are a bit tired, we can’t wait to hit the grindstone to create some new music so we can do it again soon, thanks again to everyone who made this happen, we will see you all again soon!

OFFICIAL: Starting as a side project from the now defunct band The Fabled, guitarist Rider Ingalls and Vocalist RJ Mitchell started writing new songs different from the Tech death music of the old band, going for a more melodic style of metal. After the first few songs were written the duo decided it would be a good idea to take the project past just songwriting. The lineup over time has filled out with Corvin Costache as a mighty axe-slayer, Brandon Carnahan bringing the thunder on bass and the heart throb from Ohio Josh O'Neil on drums
