Paganizer: On the Outskirts of Hades

Pagaziner (Sweden) features the most productive death metal songwriting machine that there is anywhere in the world today: Rogga Johansson. Every morning Rogga wakes up with death metal on his mind and for years he has been recording death metal at a feverish pace and it’s looking like no one will ever surpass this level of activity.
Metal Archives says that in 2016 there are three Paganizer EPs and one split. I’m talking about only one of those: the four-song EP On the Outskirts of Hades. Everything is right on this recording: the thick guitar tone, the low and gruff growling, the solos, the riffs and rhythmic drumming. Sometimes I get the feeling that Rogga applies the songwriting method of Judas Priest or Motorhead to his death metal. Rogga’s idea must be that death metal is heavy metal and heavy metal is fun. Bang your head or mosh or nod along or tap your foot, it’s memorable, rocking traditional death metal.
The only thing I need to warn you about is that I happen to like all the Rogga recordings that I come across. If he writes death metal songs about blueberry pancakes, I will still check it out because this Swede has tapped into the original death metal sources and his plan is to ride it out until the wheels come off. In summary, this is another triumphant 13-minute Rogga Johansson recording of four songs about hades, purgatory, infernal regions and the creatures that dwell therein. With such an approach to death metal, how could you possible go wrong?!

Skelator live in Seattle tonight!

Today, Friday, October 21st at the Victory Lounge in Seattle the true heavy metal of Skelator will be live with Hexengeist and Ghostblood. Skelator began in 1998 and along the way they have made music locked in the traditions of the genre. Along the way they declared “Give me metal or give me death,” they have said that they are here “to kill poseurs,” take names and chew bubblegum, and they have “traveled many miles for a heavy metal shows.”
Their most recent album is called King of Fear and it is available for listening at the link below. Skelator has one message: stronger than steel, in metal we trust!

Hexengeist (Seattle)

Some time ago I noticed the name Hexengeist somewhere, probably on a show flyer or a concert calendar listing and I thought that this could be a metal band, but I could not find any music to hear at that time.
Now the Hexengeist metal has arrived in the form of their first demo, and it rocks! Thrash and heavy metal, heavy metal and thrash, that’s the story. The songs are tailored the specifications of riffs galore, an abundance of solos, more drumming for the strumming, and setting free the fury of the beast on the vocals. You won’t need a bunch of listens to understand this music, which is great because I don’t have time to waste on bands’ abstract expressionist pseudo intellectual ambient woobly wazoobly postrock. Give me the metal or get out of my way!
Hexengeist is a great listen and it’s a fun listen. I am very pleased with the demo and the songs are in my head after the music stops playing.
This Friday, October 21st Hexengeist will be playing in Seattle at the Victory Lounge and they will be bringing along the diehards of Skelator’s “poseur-killing” true metal, in addition to the “mutant cannibal ghost” swamp thrash of Ghostblood.
I hope to be there to witness it all!

interview: Ghostblood (Seattle)

This publication features Ghostblood often and I am not sure why that is. It might be due to the barrels of cash that the band pays for each mention, concert calendar listing, review, interview and shout out. It was a year ago that they sucker punched the world with their debut album Blood from Beyond the Grave. After the album, they have been playing shows and playing pranks on humans. Their brand of swamp horror comedy gore thrash metal has been a hit with everyone from myself to all three members of the band and some of their cousins, too. Recently they had some time to look up some new words in the dictionary. They came across the word “eviscerama,” and they decided to name it their new, hot smacking single. You’ll want to mosh, break dance and do the hokey pokey when you hear this mutant thrashing. Personally, I prefer to do the twist. "C’mon, baby, let’s do the twist. Take me by my little hand, and go like this!" Yeah, baby, that’s my bag!
By the way, the band sent back these replies to some serious questions about the present state of affairs for Ghostblood. Put your apron on because this is going to get messy. Here’s the interview, which was answered by Adam, who is one of the best bassists in the band. He does some screaming, too.
What it is, Ghostblood! What has happened since the debut album one year ago? Have you changed any members? What have you discovered about each other after spending so much time together? Who is your fearless leader? Who is the one always eating potato chips at your rehearsals?
Hello! Wow, it's been a whole year since Blood From Beyond the Grave...that's like 12 months! To answer your first question, we haven't changed any members since then — we've barely changed our underwear, to be perfectly honest. We're all still getting along just fine, aside from the occasional knife fight over mortuary table-scraps. When you spend as much time together as we do, you really get a sense of the other band members' greatest fears: spiders, rejection, and rejection by spiders, respectively. We don't have a leader, per se — instead we rule by triumvirate, and take turns acting as supreme executive officer on a biweekly basis. Band policies regarding snacks and beer must be ratified by a two-thirds majority, while practice and show scheduling requires unanimous consensus.
Your latest recording is a single called “Eviscerama.” Can you explain a couple of things about the new song: Is the single a test recording? To see how it sounds before recording any more material?
The single is, indeed, a test recording (the test came back positive — we're pregnant!). The process of recording the first album was kind of a mess; we did it ourselves (awesome), piecemeal, over about nine months, recording songs as we wrote learned them (less awesome). The Eviscerama single (which we also recorded ourselves) was kind of a practice run for us in preparation for recording a second full-length. We also wanted to have some new material recorded for us to dangle in front of people, so that we may stay relevant. YOU HAVE TO DANGLE TO BE RELEVANT.
Ghostblood has been doing shows in the Northwest. So far, are you liking the experience of being a live band? Do you have plans to start venturing out of the Northwest? Is the United States ready for Ghostblood’s swamp thrash?! Is Ghostblood ready for the United States?
First off, I wouldn't really call us a "live" band, as we are all cannibal mutant ghosts. But yes, to answer your question, we enjoy the experience of being a reanimated necroplasmic manifestation-band — very much so, as a matter of fact. There's usually free beer when we play shows; occasionally there's free food, too, if a member of the audience appears to be sick or wounded. We're venturing down to Portland in November with Carnotaurus, and hopefully we'll make it down to California at some point this winter. Our ultimate goal to tour the United States on foot, like Forrest Gump.
I refuse to watch the movie Ghostbusters because that movie gives us ghosts a bad name. I think that we need Ghostblood’s celebrity status to do a public campaign in defense of ghosts. Have you been contacted by ghosts recently asking you to stand up for us (I am a ghost, too)? Are you going to help us out or not?
We believe in leading by example. It's really easy to espouse a ghost-positive ideology, but you have to be committed to really live it. So, to answer your question, we already are helping out. Every highly visible act of cannibalism or public decapitation we perform speaks louder than any words.
What is the best Ghostblood song that I should play at my upcoming wedding and why? I am having problems deciding between songs about gratuitous violence and songs about the grave. Both have many positive sides.
We typically recommend songs about opening graves and eating the dead for the reception, whereas songs about gratuitous violence are more appropriate for the actual ceremony. Incidentally, at least one of us is an ordained minister. We would love to preside over the nuptials; all we would ask in terms of payment would be first crack at eating any wedding crashers.
What is the best Ghostblood song that I should play at my second wedding and why? (I like to look ahead and make plans for my future. My teachers always told me to plan ahead, so I do.) Don’t you have songs about broken hearts and evisceration, too?
We definitely have songs about evisceration! We haven't written any songs about broken hearts just yet, but we HAVE recently perfected our technique for breaking them.
1.Open chest cavity to access heart
2.Freeze heart with liquid nitrogen
3.Once heart is frozen solid, strike with hammer/rock/rifle butt/human femur.
(Fun fact: Like you, we were taught to plan ahead, but in decapitation school).
Ghostblood has not written any songs about Casper The Friendly Ghost so far. How can this be? Casper has made entire towns fear his name and many children and adults have needed a diaper change upon seeing Casper. What else do you need to write a song? There you have fear, confusion, and terror. The songs practically write themselves!
According to a cease-and-desist letter we received in the mail, we shall not publish any material featuring or referencing the trademarked intellectual property "Casper the Friendly Ghost," under penalty of civil and criminal prosecution as outlined in U.S. Code: Title 17. Stay tuned for our new jam about Jasper the Amiable Spirit, though!
I have been trying to learn to play Ghostblood songs. In order to do that I have been eating a lot, sleeping and taking naps whenever I can, and I have been climbing the trees in my neighborhood and howling like a wolf. Somehow, these activities are not helping me to become a better musician. What do you think I am doing wrong?
Hmm...honestly, we couldn't tell you; it sounds like you're doing everything right. Here's a list of our best guesses, though:
1.You mentioned you were eating a lot. Are you drinking enough beer to soak up the food? Also, are you absolutely sure your diet contains enough human remains? The only reason we ask is that many people think they're consuming enough, but in reality there's a huge deficit in their diet.
2. Try punching your instrument harder.
3. Play louder?
4. Sacrifice a chicken in a graveyard under a full moon. Eat the chicken. Enjoy it so much that you abandon music to pursue a career in culinary arts.
5. Get drunk.
I have other questions for you, but I have to go and play with my snakes now. I have a snake farm and they need attention. One last question: what is the best way to keep up with the news of Ghostblood? Are you on the Myspace? I have read that the Myspace is very popular with the youth of today. Do you use the electronic internets sometimes? Do you have a hotline that humans can call about Ghostblood news?
For sure! You're not much of a snake farmer if you neglect your scale-babies — they need love just like kittens or baby rabbits or pet bears or domesticated mummies.
Anyway, we've never heard of MySpace, but then, we've never been huge into astronomy (MySpace is like a NASA dating site, isn't it?).

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS Announces East Coast North American Tour With Wolvhammer, Amiensus; New Material In The Works

Following a brutal month-long North American tour with Belphegor, Origin, and Shining this Summer, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS confirms a new set of East Coast tour dates with Wolvhammer and Amiensus for the Fall months.
The newly confirmed tour will see the caravan raiding the East Coast of the continent with thirteen new dates announced for late November into mid-December. This review comes a little after the release date but under the circumstances, I make no apologies for this. The reason for my tardiness is that I was not initially very struck by this, the ninth album from Italian melodic prog band DGM. This may have been down to the fact that it was vying for my attention alongside some other big hitting releases but actually, I just think it needed a touch more time in my ears to create the biggest impact upon me.
I’m still not saying it is blowing me away in the same manner as other records this year but I am enjoying the record a lot more than I did in the beginning and I feel better able to offer my considered and objective thoughts on it.
By way of background, it’s worth noting that the band has changed significantly over the years. No original members now remain with the founding trio of guitarist Diego Reali, keyboardist Maurizio Pariotti and drummer Gianfranco Tassella, after whom the band was named, all having departed. Regardless of this though, speaking as someone who somehow owns the entire back catalogue without ever calling myself much of a fan, I have to say that this is arguably DGM’s best recording to date. The fact that I didn’t realise I had the entire catalogue maybe speaks volumes as to how I generally regard the DGM discography to date.
‘The Passage’ is undeniably very slick and very professional, topped off with a muscular, clear production. The album contains some good performances all-round but for me, even now, there either needs to be a bit more of an overt prog feel throughout or alternatively, it needs to go all-out and provide melodies that more frequently give me the chills. As it is, my mind does wander occasionally as the disc develops.
But enough Of The criticism, let’s focus on the positives, of which there are a decent number to be fair.
To begin with, there’s ‘The Secret Part 1’. Unquestionably, it is one of the best tracks on the album, bursting into life with a groove heavy riff after a brief quiet intro. The riffs, courtesy of Simone Mularoni are great; fast and heavy, with plenty of chops as well, reminiscent a little bit of Symphony X. The chorus bridge is glorious with a melodic hard rock feel before a hook laden chorus kicks in to great effect. The composition also features a lovely quieter segment before the crunching riffs and melodies return powerfully. The keyboards of Emanuele Casali play a prominent part throughout, and the overall vibe of this track is instant and accessible prog metal meets AOR.
Coupled with ‘Part 2’, this opening salvo extends beyond 15 minutes in length, delivering the longer more epic composition that many fans have been wanting for some time. ‘The Secret Part 2’ takes up where ‘Part 1’ left off but with slightly more emphasis on atmospheres and the more progressive side of the band’s songwriting. As such, the keys are more overt, there are more pronounced dynamics and there’s a slightly darker vibe all round.
‘Animal’ is a wonderfully upbeat track that benefits from an unashamed swaggering hard rock vibe, complete with hook-laden chorus. Those flamboyant guitars are all over the song and it’s hard not to succumb to the feel-good flavour of this track.
With a guest appearance from one of my all-time favourite metal vocalists, Evergrey’s Tom Englund, ‘Ghost Of Insanity’ is an inspired track that pushes the opener all the way in terms of quality and enjoyment. The duo of regular vocalist Mark Basile with Englund works really well, both complimenting each other and adding different ingredients to the composition. However, with a dark prog feel, properly chunky riffs and a bruising menance, not to mention a cracking chorus, it was always going to be a winner regardless of who was behind the mic.
‘Daydreamer’ is slower-paced but soars thanks to a huge performance from Basile in the chorus. ‘Dogma’ on the other hand, is heavy and fast. It is perhaps the most aggressive song on the album, albeit not without the ubiquitous instrumental flamboyance and a great rhythmic spine thanks to drummer Fabio Costantino and bassist Andrea Arcangeli.
In direct contrast are ‘Disguise’ and ‘In Sorrow’. The former is a gorgeous 90 second interlude that features a rich piano melody and emotive vocals from Basile. The latter begins with a guitar tome that vaguely recalls Metallica’s ‘Fade To Black’, but is a closing ballad that once again showcases the talents of the vocalist, pushing his softer side to the fore.
In between these tracks are a few that still fail to raise much interest and don’t quite match the quality elsewhere. It’s a shame because ‘The Passage’ demonstrates that when they get it right, DGM are a force to be reckoned with. And, with a little more consistency, this could have been vying for a place in my end of year ‘best of’ list. As it is, I’m afraid it just misses out. Worth checking out nonetheless though, as I seem to be in the minority that’s not smitten…

Thankful for the Ride!
I just want to start off by thanking all of the venue owners and promoters of the last few days. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday can be very hard days to fill when booking a tour and we are all very thankful to them for giving us a room to play and vital support as we try to chase our dream. We have had great fortune to work with some amazing people over the years and the last couple days were no exception. I may be a couple days late on it, but this past weekend was the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday. While it felt weird to not be home and celebrating with family this year, I wanted to take this time to tell everyone we have encountered on the road in the last year, thank you very much for all of your care, support and kind words. None of this would be possible without you!
A very big thanks to our friends at The Kraken Bar in Seattle. They helped us out huge with a last minute booking when our other venue fell through. We had a great time returning and rocking out with everyone who came out. There were some pretty diehard Iron Kingdom fans in attendance and it is always a privilege to play for such passionate people!
Eugene on Monday was a treat. I think all of us would agree in putting Eugene in the highlight reel for our last tour, so we were looking forward to returning. While there wasn’t as great a turnout as last time it was pretty awesome for a Monday night. It was great to catch up with some old friends as well as meet a couple new ones. People in Eugene have been really nothing but warm and welcoming to us every time we come through.
Medford! What can i say about Medford… Our experience last night in Medford was amazing and much needed. We had the pleasure of playing with a great group out of Texas called Urban Pioneers. The line up was an unexpected one. UP plays what they call fast bluegrass, which i think is code for they fucking shred. It was wicked and truly enjoyable but what i dug the most was that everyone that was there to see us supported them and vice versa. There as no division in the crowd or any animosity between two very different styles and musical background and it was refreshing to see everyone just hanging out and listening to music, even if wasn’t the music they would normally listen to. Last night is the kind of mixed bill that I really enjoy. I mean these guys play faster than a lot of the metal bands we’ve played with.
Over and above the great night we had musically another reason Medford stands apart from some other towns we’ve played is the hospitality of Jym Harris. Jym and his wife Lisa open their home to touring musicians and offer a place to sleep as well as an amazing meal! The last time we were in town before last night was about 2 years ago and we still talk about how great the food was! Many many thanks to you, Jym and Lisa! The four of us, and bands like us, appreciate everything you do on top of booking shows. The scene needs more warriors keeping the flame burning and flag flying, so thank you again for the food and the use of the shower!
Come out and rock with us at the Cafe Colonial in Sacramento! This is the second time we have played at this venue, the first being with Night Demon in 2014. Im looking forward to rocking Sacramento again, every time we are in town its a good night. Lets break the attendance record for the last time we played this venue! Come out and bring your friends!

Rising Up From Surrey, B.C. Canada, Iron Kingdom Is Leading the Charge of the Rising New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal Movement .
Inspired by the legendary pillars of Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blind Guardian, The Scorpions, and Rush, this four piece machine are bringing back the classic sounds and foundations of 70s and 80s Metal.
Iron Kingdom was formed in 2011 by Chris Osterman, along with Leighton Holmes and former drummer Amanda Osterman. The band is well known for their energetic and electrifying stage presence, as well as intricate musical melodies. The current line up features Chris Osterman - Guitar / Vocals, Leighton Holmes - Bass, Kenny Kroecher – Guitar, Joey Paul – Drums.
Chris brings star power and provides some exhilarating guitar work along with hair splitting multi-octave vocal range. Bass guitarist Leighton Holmes brings a poetically dark lyrical style and oversees the bottom end creating a tight rhythm section with his classic finger style playing.
The band released their debut album 'Curse Of The Voodoo Queen' on December 14, 2011, featuring past members Jordan Wright on rhythm guitar and Amanda Osterman on drums. Jordan Wright left the band, after the albums completion and before its release, and was replaced by Kenny Kroecher in the fall of 2011. Kenny Kroecher adds the excitement of duel lead guitars and intricate guitar rhythm work as an excellent compliment to Chris' guitar style. In 2013 the group entered the studio again to record their 2nd full-length release titled 'Gates of Eternity' released on April 26th 2013.
The four then spent some time on the road, heading through Canada, Western USA, and onward to Europe. The European leg included shows in Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. The gigs in Germany included a performance at the iconic KEEP IT TRUE XVII festival. Thus creating some major momentum as now Iron Kingdom were spreading their moniker far and wide in support of the first two releases.
On July 30th 2015 Iron Kingdom released not one but two more albums, 'Ride For Glory' their 3rd full length album, as well as 'Unleashed at the Kraken (Live in Seattle)' a live album recorded on a previous tour. The band set out on tour again in support of the two new releases. The tour was unfortunately riddled with many trials, including a vehicle accident that almost killed the band members. Following the tour, Amanda decided to focus on other things in her life and stepped back from the band to pursue other commitments. Leaving the door open for the newest member of the band, drummer Joey Paul. With a solid new line up, Iron Kingdom is ready once again to take the world by storm, and lead the revival of the mighty and classic sounds of Traditional Heavy Metal.

the end of Junkyard Lipstick

Hi Friends, Fans & Metal Family
It is with great sadness that after having the privilege of forming this band, I find myself in the position to announce the disbandment of Junkyard Lipstick after more than 5 years.
General life priorities have changed for members currently in the band. Studies, work and other responsibilities have made it difficult to maintain the momentum.
I hold my time with Junkyard Lipstick with the utmost respect and sincerest appreciation. This band has been a huge part of my life and I couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished. I am deeply moved by the relationships we created and maintained throughout this journey, and grateful for the hard work each band member has put into making this band what it is.
This has been an emotional time for myself and the girls, especially so soon after the release of our latest album "Repulsive Judgement". In light of this to recover recording costs, I will be selling the remaining CD's and t-shirts at a reduced price, please get in touch with me.
I also kindly ask that you respect and give each member their space to deal with this in their own way. Thanks to each person that has ever loved our music, supported our dreams and helped to make the music happen.

the return of WRUST

OFFICIAL: Botswana’s WRUST will perform at Witchfest Open Air Johannesburg and Cape Town. Their return to South Africa and the live circuit begins in 2017. Without a doubt one of the forefathers of the Botswana metal scene and one of Africa’s best live acts.
Wrust is a four-piece heavy metal band hailing from Gaborone, Botswana, a small country in Southern Africa. Formed by front man Stux Daemon at the turn of the millennium, Wrust has become one of Southern Africa’s most prominent metal bands, with over a decade of album releases and tours both within and outside Africa. The band has headlined many prominent music festivals from the likes of WITCHFEST EXTREME 2003 (Jhb), Woodstock 2008 (Gaborone), The Windhoek Metal Fest 2009 (Namibia),Solomacello 2013 (Milan) and the annual charity event, Rock Against Aids. They have also shared the stage with many renowned metal bands, including Sepultura (Brazil), Carcass (UK), KONKHRA (Denmark) and Entombed (Sweden).
Through their music, Wrust hope to inspire people to become independent minded and free-willed, breaking the shackles of stereotypes and challenging cultural institutions from governments to religion, all the while delivering fast paced performances and sheer brutal metal! 2013 has seen Wrust return from a tour of Milan, Italy whilst working on a documentary filmed based on metal music, March of the Gods, due for release in August 2014. Lord Almighty could be what the band wants in the sense of a confused cry asking, “Lord Almighty, what kind of music is this, child?! Good Lord!”
Do you know what I hear? Classic rock and metal melodies hijacking some extreme metal for a run around the block, and then the extreme metal turns the tables on the classic rock. It does not sound strange or experimental, but there is a bit of a difference going on and it’s probably that someone in the band is bringing in some of those melodies, and only they know for sure what is inspiring the melodies. Obviously, I do not know and don’t pretend to know. However, you can just go listen to the complete recording yourself and give it a whirl yourself.

IRON FIRE released their 8th full-length album Among the Dead September 16 on Crime Records.
Want to Headbang like it's 1999? Then Among the Dead should be your obvious choice. The new offering from IRON FIRE is as old school as it gets 16 years into the millennium. The 90s spawned a lot of power metal classics, and Among the Dead is made in the spirit of those. Albums like Black in Mind (Rage), The Dark Saga (Iced Earth) and Better Than Raw (Helloween) were all blueprints for the making of Among the Dead.
Recorded in Death Island Studio with engineer Marco Angioni and Mixed in Poland's Hertz Studios, heaviness is guaranteed, along with melodic hooks, blistering guitars and pounding power metal drumming. This is no-bull**** metal from the heart, made by Denmarks finest power metal band!
Denmark's best-selling power metal band Iron Fire is still alive and kicking. Sixteen years ago when a new millennium was entered, the Thunderstorm album struck the world, and is today considered a Danish power metal cult classic. Seven albums later the band still breathes as vibrantly as ever, and although there's been various line-up changes, founding member Martin Steene and his sidekick Kirk Backarach pushed the boundaries of the band. In addition to Steene and Kirk, another founding member joined the battlefield, as original drummer Gunnar Olsen rejoined the band in 2015 after 15 years of absence. Iron Fire is therefore now a three-piece band that still clings to melodic old school power metal as it was meant to be played. The music however has not remained still, instead evolving over time:From the dark epic "Voyage of the Damned" and the rock n roll influenced "March of the Immortals," to classic power hymns like "Wings of Rage." But first and foremost Iron Fire takes power metal very literally, as the common denominator in the music is, and has always been, power...with a capital P!

The band proclaims "Death to hipsters!" and chooses to march along the path of traditional death metal. The entire album can be heard at the link below. This is a case of a band giving the listeners exactly what they promised: old death metal without hesitations. As you will read below, they wanted the sound of the age of the classics of the genre and have done their best to bring it all home.
OFFICIAL: Rabid Swedish death metal band Gorgosaur whip up an album that will shake the skin off your bones. Raw, filthy and caustic, these guys pay homage to the very pioneers of the style - Nihilist, Carnage, Dismember, Entombed and those like Necrony, Vermin and Nirvana 2002; they channel a sound that's devoid of melodies or anything that will interrupt their seething, rollicking momentum. Memento Mori label has a knack of finding such death metal gems, fostering them, enabling to release full length albums and this way strengthening the very foundation of the genre with renewed monolithic pillars. Gorgosaur boast of members of Deranged, RazorRape and Splattered Mermaids, and have procured the artistic talent of Mark Riddick for their artwork. Moreover, the album was recorded and mixed by Tomas Skogsberg at the legendary Sunlight Studio (Stockholm, Sweden) and mastered by Ted Tringo at The Ancient Way Mastering (U.S.A.). Clearly, this is not for the faint of heart but for those whose passion for old school death metal supersedes everything else. This is for the underground-mongers and they ought to revel in it. All hail the mighty Gorgosaur!

review: Pressure Points

So far this year, I’ve tried to keep my reviews current and up-to-date wherever possible. However, for one reason or another, this review is way overdue. For this, I can only apologise; both to the band and to the many people out there who I hope will become belated fans of the band after reading this.
The band in question is Pressure Points, a quintet from Heinola, Finland who have produced something rather tasty indeed in the form of their sophomore album, ‘False Lights’. Anyone who knows me will know that I am a sucker for great artwork and, on that score alone, Pressure Points get a gold star. And, if I still had the money to burn like when I was in my early 20s, I’d have bought this record blind after one look at the cover.
There have been occasions in the past where I’ve done this and been wholly disappointed by the music contained within. With ‘False Lights’ however, that is far from the case, as the aural content is every bit as alluring as the visuals. Citing the names of Porcupine Tree, Rush and Dream Theater as influences, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Pressure Points would be a blend of classic, traditional and modern progressive rock at the lighter end of the scale. In parts, this is actually an accurate summation of the music, where strong melodies merge with clean, soothing vocals, layers of keyboards and an almost laid-back vibe. At times, the output calls to mind the purveyors of the genre back in the 70s, whereas at others, the music is bang up-to-date and in keeping with more modern prog trends.
Indeed, the album kicks off in a manner that underlines these initial thoughts as a bold bass line from Janne Parikka ushers ‘Wreckage’ into life, followed closely by a soulful lead guitar atop swathes of lush keys courtesy of Veli-Matti Kyllönen that create a deep and welcoming atmosphere.
But then, just as you’re settling into the song, in comes something far heavier, far more aggressive and unexpected. The keys change to a more 70’s inspired sound but remain prominent in the mix. However, all of a sudden, they are competing with a melodic death metal riff and growled vocals from guitarist Kari Olli as the more extreme metal influences also cited by Pressure Points come forcefully to the fore. Interestingly, the sense of melody never dissipates and even when the more extreme elements are in full swing, the track is accessible and it maintains that progressive feel. Acoustic guitars, clean vocals courtesy of Olli and fellow guitarist Jaakko Lehtinen as well as passages of calm introspection that verge on ambience, all form part of this epic composition.
At ten minutes in length, ‘Wreckage’ is a brilliant opener. It has the time and space to flit from idea to idea as well as the instrumental prowess and songwriting nous to back up the ambition. It fizzes past with incredible panache and by the end, I’m left in a bit of a daze, equal parts impressed and stunned.
The thing is, ‘Wreckage’ is just the beginning. What follows is a further 45 minutes of music straddled over another five lengthy and equally ambitious tracks.
‘Between The Lies’ continues where ‘Wreckage’ leaves off in terms of blending the melodies and hooks with more extreme elements as well as a complex yet engaging song structure. I absolutely adore the mid-section where the foot is taken off the pedal and rich vocals come to the fore atop a more subtle and moving melody which segues into a ‘classic’ prog piano melody and then into more growls and harsh riffing.
‘Electric Shadows’ begins powerfully and more aggressively, pushing their death metal influences further than at any stage previously. Indeed, it takes well over a minute for the elegant melodies to enter the fray alongside more accessible vocals, this time courtesy of keyboardist Veli-Matti Kyllönen, whose delivery adds yet another welcome addition to the album. Some of the lead guitar work on this track happily contains echoes of Omnium Gatherum, a band with whom I have a pre-existing love affair.
The second-half of ‘False Lights’ continues in a similarly impressive vein as the first, with each of ‘Sleepwalk’, ‘Dance Of Coincidence’ and ‘In Desolation’, all offering something to impress me.
‘Sleepwalk’ manages to transform itself from an understated beginning to something far more urgent and charged by the mid-way point, dominated by an incessant riff that eventually opens up, under the constant nagging of more lead guitar wailing. ‘Dance Of Coincidence’ begins with a stunning piano melody that immediately catches my ear before diving into a frenetic black metal-esque work-out underpinned by strong drumming from Vili Auvinen but all the while retaining that striking piano melody at the core. After the ubiquitous quiet mid-section, the song then builds to a memorable finale, full of emotion and more great lead guitar work.
And then it’s down to ‘In Desolation’ to close out this album. Naturally, it does so in style and I particularly like the driving tempo of the song, the controlled aggression and the smattering of unabashed, euphoric melody that intersperses what is arguably the consistently heaviest track on the record.
What a find. I’d heard whispers from those that I trust, but I wasn’t truly prepared for ‘False Lights’. This is an album that will, if there’s any justice in the world, propel this Finnish band into the conscious of a much wider audience and force one of the big labels to take notice. If Pressure Points are not signed for their third album, I will personally lead the mutiny. Check this album out – I guarantee you’ll not be left disappointed.

remembering Znöwhite, part 2

Znöwhite were a U.S. thrash band that began in the early 80s in Chicago, U.S. and amongst their recordings there is an EP in 1984, another EP in 1985 and the final full-length album called Act of God from 1988.

Things must have been going well for the band after the first EP called All Hail to Thee in 1984 because in 1985 they had another EP called Kick'em When They’re Down. To my ears, the 1985 recording sounds better and stronger in terms of recording quality. The 1984 EP showed the band’s fast side pretty well. The 1985 EP starts with two blazing speed metal songs that sound nothing short of fantastic for those wanting to wreck their necks on speed metal. Then, “Run Like the Wind” follows and for the first time we hear the band showing great pacing in this uptempo song that compared to the first two sounds a bit slow, but it’s definitely not a slow song. The traditional heavy metal side of the band has come out a bit more on that song, which is then followed by “Too Late,” another speed fest, after which the band lets the cat out the bag: the last song “Turn up the Pain” is a midtempo track for most of the time, and the pace picks up a bit towards the end. However, the other side of the band is abundantly clear; they have become a lot a better at managing the slower tempos. The song may be a bit of a shocker at first, but it’s really not a slow song, like some people have said, it’s a midtempo/uptempo track. At any rate, overall, this second EP is just as much fun as the first EP, with better production and a bit more experience in terms of songwriting. The drumming sounds great, the guitars sound blazing and the vocals are definitely stronger.
In 1986 there was a live EP called Live Suicide, but it wasn’t until 1988 that the band had its full-length album ready for the world: Act of God.
I will give my two cents on the album sometime soon. In the meantime, look into the 1985 EP.
