out Sept. 3: Portrait - traditional heavy metal from Sweden
Portrait
At One with None
Metal Blade Records
3 September 2021
Over the course of 15 years Portrait has been working with the proposition that classic-style form of traditional, legacy heavy metal that can be skilled, and ominous, not a goofy, silly or joke music style. This, their fifth album, finds them continuing their trajectory, one that has been marked by good quality, and a certain uniqueness with their ominous heavy metal. The listener gets the feeling that the songs are crafted with attention to detail. The guitar work shines. The riffs and the melodies show a lot of work put in to make things worthwhile for the knowledgeable audiences expecting good guitar playing. The vocals are classic-style, prototype melodic singing with high notes. There are high notes, but it is not show-off nor horror-metal, which is why fans of classic-rock, heavy rock singing in the melodic style would be potential listeners. The singing is the not schizophrenic King Diamond horror creepiness, although in the high notes, there is sometimes a distant yet detectable echo of Mercyful Fate. "A Murder of Crows" is probably the most Mercyful Fate/King Diamond-ish, the one where they purposely indulged in their inspirations.
A good reason to look into Portrait is because they do not disguise their music. Disguises can be things like speed, blasting, playing really slow, adding lots of ambient sounds, or certain brand/name production. Listen not because the production fits a certain scene, not because they have a good gimmick (they don't). They have no mascot, no fake personas, no speed/slow tricks. Listen to enjoy the art of good guitar playing, good riffs, with also interesting, traditional melodies and solos playing on top of the rhythms. Listeners may also notice the good rhythm section, and the clear drum sound, of course, as it is an entertaining part of the sound. It’s been a good while since their previous album in 2017, but this is another strong chapter in the band’s discography.

out Sept. 3: Deformatory - Canadian fast, brutal extreme
Deformatory
Inversion of the Unseen Horizon
3 September 2021
The beginnings of this Canadian duo go back to 2008. After figuring out some things, including a name change, they started pushing the boulder up the mountain, in 2011 with an EP, in 2013 with an album, another album in 2016, some singles in 2018, a split in 2019 and now the new album. The vocals are uniformly, consistently a low, gruff, unintelligible growl throughout the entire recording. The drumming is comprised of frenetic, super-duper fast blasting, with some segments of non-blasting, but blasting is abundant. The guitars, it should be mentioned, are not jazz-like nor experimental, which makes the music much more comprehensible to the audience. The wrist-breaking guitar work can be thrashy, tremolo, death metal, and more, all done with a brutal contemporary death metal production, and it also played skillfully, and very fast, overall. This is fast brutal death, but the most important part is that it is understandable quickly to the genre’s audiences. The one-dimensional growling may work against them with fans that want more variety, screams or craziness. Sometimes the bass guitar is audible, but for the most part it is not necessarily so, and it is part of the frenzied heaviness. The drum sound seems normal in this genre, which means sampled/replaced drumming. The album could entertain the devoted fan of contemporary brutal or tech-death, while keeping in mind that this is not jazz/abrupt metal, just fast, growling, and headbanging.

ABSCESSION - death metal from Sweden/Germany
ABSCESSION is streaming two songs from their second album Rot of Ages, scheduled for November 19th, 2021. ABSCESSION is death metal from Sweden/Germany, mostly Stockholm-style Swedish death metal. There is a certain melodic sensibility in the execution of their sound that may catch the listener's attention. The band is Thomas Clifford (Blood of Serpents, Throne of Heresy) on vocals; Skaldir on guitars, bass and keyboards and backing vocals; and Markus Porsklev on drums.

Anette Olzon - "Parasite" - Official Music Video
Below are a few songs from the new Anette Olzon album called Strong that will be out on September 10th, 2021. Anette Olzon is known for her melodic singing and the new songs continue that tradition. One thing to note is that the new music is along the lines of contemporary melodic metal, but it is also very different from her previous album Shine from 2014. Shine was gentle, basically a catchy album with not much in the way of guitars, while the new music is more rocking. To hear the difference for yourself, after the three new songs below, listen to 2014's "Lies." If you like that song, below is also the entire album Shine that is on YouTube.
"Anette Ingegerd Olsson (born 21 June 1971), known by the stage name Anette Olzon, is a Swedish singer, best known as the former lead vocalist of Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish from 2007 to 2012. She is also the vocalist of Swedish classic rock band Alyson Avenue, and of the Finnish heavy metal band The Dark Element." (Wikipedia

Blitz is a one-woman “black speed” or black thrash project in Virginia, USA. Blitz says online that the project started during the quarantine when she was at home with the kids. She kept coming up with riffs that turned into songs. The vocals are a rasping growl, with galloping/headbanging rhythms, as is the drumming. The only part that is melodic would be the solos, but other than that, it is fast songs leaning substantially to the thrash/speed side. In my opinion, the guitar riffs could stand to be a bit louder in the mix, but overall, the recording should be fun for fans of demos/new DIY thrash.

1.Caged 01:14

3.Abreaction 00:45
4.Rock Bottom 01:09
The Washington state band Impulse Noise specializes in quick bursts from a blasting drummer, and the three other members do their best to keep up. The vocals are a type of screamed growl, and everything goes at a frenzied pace, as fast as humanly possible. In 2018 there was an EP, and the new split gets to the point as efficiently as possible, with no intros, no movie samples, nothing, just four tracks of blinding, screaming speed. By the time your mind processes what just happened the music is over, and it is time to repeat. Impulse Noise is exclusively for total grind fans. The only unfortunate thing is that there are not some other 25 or 30 more songs by Impulse Noise. By the way, on Bandcamp it is not obvious where the music of the other band is, and I could not see it there.

Pitiless Gaze (fast cavernous computerized extremity from Washington state, USA)
Both Bandcamp and Metal Archives show a 12-minute track called "The Last Messiah" by Pitiless Gaze, a duo of "LJ" writing the music and "RM" doing vocals. The song was released on released March 19th, 2021. The lo-fi recording is growling/shrieking with various types of special effects, what seems like drum programming in music of the blasting, brutal cavernous extreme metal styles. On Bandcamp, for the lyrics there is a very long essay-form writing, but it is not clear what part of this is used in the song, as it is impossible to understand the growling and computerized vocals, even with the words available. The first few lines at the beginning do seem to be used as lyrics, as for the rest, the interested listener can patiently attempt to decipher the computer vocals and see what happens.

Agoron (tech-deathcore from Washington state, USA)
Agoron is "environmentalist" tech-deathcore that Metal Archives shows as Braedon Billheimer (bassist/drummer in Species Splicer; and vocals/drums in Temple) and Jonny Myrick from Ghostblood, Kömmand, Toxic Reign, ex-Children of Seraph, ex-The Thorium Switch. The discography is four EPs: Geotic Sovereignty (2018), End (2018), Theorem Ultra (2021), and Beneath the Blackened Sun (2021). The most recent recording is three songs of super fast, computerized drumming, growling/screaming with lots of effects and a general style of robotic, tech-groove/djent sounds. The lyrics on Bandcamp show a dystopian, “global warming” believers' perspective. Maybe the robotized music is a metaphor for post-human machines looking back on "global warming" and all those "catastrophes" predicted by the environmentalists, politicians, leftists, liberals, U.N., so on and so forth. Tech-death and deathcore fans may find common points of interest in Agoron, as might the believers in “global warming” and such politics.

The Greek band began in 2004 and in the next few years did a couple of demos and in 2010 their first album Metal Is Back. An EP in 2012 followed, a 2016 album, and that brings us to 2021. Crimson Fire is legacy-style melodies without extreme elements. Their specialty is memorable songwriting. It is 10 full songs in some 48 minutes. The singing is good and melodic, the guitar playing catchy, the riffs pleasant and nice. The songs range from rockers, to big-chorus anthems, and to super ear-friendly adult contemporary heavy metal, resulting in something like a power/heavy/AOR sound. It's feel-good music, with songs about the night, fire, time and confidence. There is no ballad/power ballad. It's all rock, fun metal, happy metal, with some background keyboards to make the experience even more pleasant. There is no annoying high screaming/yelling, no experimentation, no weirdo/explicit/illicit lyrics, and no political/religious/social statements (It also looks like the lyrics/image is better now because in the past they were criticized for glam lyrics/image, and it’s possible that they decided to improve on that front). It is prototypical melodic, catchy, pleasant adult contemporary music with very wide appeal.

out this week: Feral Lord - dissonant black metal from the U.S.
Feral Lord
Purity of Corruption
Vargheist Records
28 August 2021
Bandcamp says that black metal Feral Lord has on drums "Cave Ritual" (also known as: "SLK," "Plaguehammer," and "Jared Moran"), and on guitars, bass and vocals it is "Nythroth" (also known as "Nick Turner"). "Nythroth" and "Cave Ritual" are Feral Lord, and these two individuals are also another entity named Acausal Intrusion, tech-death, according to Metal Archives, which shows literally more than 60 other related projects. The duo is shrieking, fast, harsh and unmelodic, unpolished extremity. It is hard-driving, fast-charging, loud guitar but instead of the normal traits of black metal, like the thrashy, melodic and tremolo characteristics, it is nonlinear, contradictory sounds that do not seem harmonious or smooth. This is not totally dissonant guitar work, but it has some sideways vibes (maybe mathcore?), something that some black metal, avant-garde, and experimental bands are known to do. The vocals are shrieking screaming, and the drummer puts on a clinic. With a such hard-working drummer (from so many projects), this recording sounds rather different like the plastic, flaccid sound of sound replacement technology, sampled drumming and drum programming that is the norm in metal music. Extreme metal audiences interested in hearing an album that is wild, but also offers something different (something less traditional) may welcome the furies at work here.

out this week: Maze of Terror - Peruvian thrash
The angry Peruvians hit the ground running back in 2011-12 when they came out with their first EP in 2012 after the formation. The thrash trio have continued their tradition of not disappearing for too long before striking again. After their 2016 album they have a recording out almost every year, showing no signs of streamlining or cleaning up their filthy music. The new album comes out August 26th, 2021 on Xtreem Music (it also looks like the band released it indepedently earlier this year). The acerbic vocals are close to harsh black metal/black thrash, with thrash/speed/punk guitar work, and their usual furious execution. The range of speed goes from moments of midtempo/uptempo, contrasting with some of the most extreme segments. In this listener’s opinion, it feels like during the second half (minute 30 to 47, more or less), the band ratchets up the intensity a bit more, launching into blasting black thrash mode. The lyrics read like the Peruvians make the brutality of horror movies/TV news their own gruesome, obscene stories. Would fans of U.S. thrash like this music? Possibly, but this is something more ghoulish. Would fans of black thrash, South American and European thrash enjoy this album? That is probably the most direct demographic that would welcome Maze of Terror into the fold.

out this week: Lower 13 - melodic groove from Ohio, USA
Lower 13
Embrace The Unknown
Pure Steel Records
August 27th 2021
Lower 13 began in 2006 and in 2010 their debut album was released. Their practice is to release an album every four years or so, and in 2021 they have their fourth album. Apparently, they have had the same three members, if we look at the information on Metal Archives. Looking at the pictures of the band, it is to be concluded that they must have been very young when they began because nowadays they look young still. Anyway, they play in a bit of an eclectic way, something like U.S. melodic groove, with bits of various sounds in some 42 minutes and nine songs. The opening song is melodic thrash featuring singing and a bit of blasting, with some background screams/growls/gang shouts, resulting in a contemporary gritty power thrash. The second song shows two melodic singing voices, and continues the style of melodic groove thrash/power, headbanging songs. The third song flaunts a heavier, groovier, djentier sound with growl/scream vocals, and sounding a bit unique, with metalcore vibes, which, in my opinion, were not very present on the first two songs. The fourth song is a bit of a power ballad, in hard rock/heavy metal/metalcore way.
Here's the deal. All sorts of bits seem to sneak into the sound. At times you might even hear a bit of pop punk melodic or alternative feel or some classic/hard rock. The guitars sometimes groove a lot, then might get thrashy, and after that, more melodic. This is not to say that the album sounds like a compilation. Maybe it helps to see a traditional heavy metal/hard rock and metalcore/groove forming some type of alliance, but succeeding in making a coherent spectrum united by the melodic singing, some extreme vocals, grooving/thrashy guitars. The execution is not too busy, either, as if the band works with the objective that their music is meant to performed live by the three members. The music is uptempo and rocking, and sounds both young (in an American metal way) and done well, too.

MONUMENT OF MISANTHROPY
Unterweger

12 November 2021
MONUMENT OF MISANTHROPY is George 'Misanthrope' Wilfinger on vocals, Joe Gatsch on lead guitars, Shoi Sen (De Profundis) on lead guitars, Sam Terrak on bass and Cédric Malebolgia (Putridity) on drums. The new album is "a concept album based on the shocking life of the transatlantic serial killer Jack Unterweger." For fans of brutal death metal, there is something interesting to check out. The music is done well, proficiently, and everything, but another thing to note is that the vocals complement the music. It's not just one-dimensional, one-tone, colorless and boring growling. There is low growling, shrieking, and a sense that the vocalist is working as hard as the rest of the band to deliver something that can maintain your interest. The variety in the vocals adds a nice touch to the intricate guitar work and all the other wizardry of the album. Now, as for the lyrics, well, that's another kit and kaboodle. If you dislike brutal lyrics, then of course, this band will not change your mind, as they are probably as gruesome as any horror movie can deliver.

In this project he does guitars, bass, keyboards and all sorts of effects. Amongst his works he has the following: Ashcloud, Berzerker Legion, Gods Forsaken, Henry Kane, Human Harvest, Massacre, Monstrous, Nattravnen, Pale King, Syn:drom, The Hangmans Sorrow, Ursinne, Vholdghast, Wombbath, Wormveil, ex-Acid Domain, ex-Cavevomit, ex-Disfigured Victims, Troikadon, ex-Cropsy Maniac, ex-Crossbow Suicide, ex-Just Before Dawn, ex-Skineater, ex-Sorghegard, ex-Ooz.
See?! Workaholic.
For the vocals he dug up a fellow zombie from a German graveyard: Ralf Hauber from Revel In Flesh. On drums they have Ed Warby from Gorefest and Hail of Bullets. They have done two albums so far: Serpent's Curse (2018) and Into the Red (2020). In 2021 they will have an EP in honor of all things horror. They are now streaming two songs. As you will see, this is minimalistic death metal. They have cover of two punk bands The Misfits and The Ramones, but the covers sound nothing like the originals: just imagine not-too-bright, brutal zombies deep growling, and playing one-beat rhythms and one-note downtuned guitars, and you'd have an idea of the cemetery-party-good-time simple-minded big, dumb and ready-for-fun death metal in store.

Sea Sleeper - U.S. prog deathcore vinyl version of 2021 album Nostophobia
This album already came out in February of 2021, but the vinyl on Metal Assault Records will see the light of day in November. The music is extreme metal, and some people call them "post death prog" while the band itself says "post-metal band with a healthy passion for death metal." Metal Archives calls them "progressive deathcore." All these descriptions are correct in some way, as long as you expect U.S. contemporary prog extreme. It is best to listen for yourself, better than any reviewer can describe. If you are interested in the vinyl, see the Bandcamp link below for more information.
