review: Anaal Nathrakh -- cybernetic black metal

The new work by the drum machine blasting extreme metal duo fulfills the basic re-quirements for the fans: chaotic, jarring industrial hyper speed black metal. In other words, AN is still superfast and harsh, a cyborg-robotic-alien force of furious steroid road rage, as usual. To be honest, for people that listen to extreme stuff a lot every day, the speed and chaos is cool and all, but it’s not in and of itself particularly exciting, given that many bands play fast in grind, death and black. If that were all that AN had to offer, it would be good and interesting, but it would not answer the question as to whether this album actually has good songs. Once the listener gets past all the bells and whistles of the extremity, one finds that the guitar riffs, especially when they are thrash/ black-based, are catchy. Fortunately, there are lots of those riffs to be heard throughout. In addition, there are lots of parts with melodic singing that make the songs fun. The extreme vocals go the distance with maniacal screaming until blue in the face (it’s not monotonous, burped death growling that is so boring!) and the melodic singing works well as an entertaining contrast. Logically, this does not sound like an experiment. This is their eleventh album and they started around 1999. The chaotic, blasting sound is their brand, and they manage to make it organized, tight and purposeful. Will people believe just how much melody is to be found on here?! [Metal Bulletin Zine]

The basics: The vocals are a deep growl, with some higher screams. The speed is a midtempo style, certainly not slow, but also staying away from the blasting, inhuman speeds. The genre is prog death, but not tech-death: meandering, a bit chugging and sometimes noodley guitar work.

The first song available on Bandcamp is not representative of their style. This song is more direct than all the other songs, and it almost gives the wrong impression, actually. The second one is closer to their true personality of prog influences and a bit more winding, twisting turns in the music. The band avoids melody almost as a matter of principle, almost too stubbornly refusing to give fans even a bit of catchy or melodic parts, almost like a rebellious move against giving people melody, except a bit during the solos. Ultimately, the band is of interest to fans of the prog side of death, especially fans of newer, up-and-coming bands. At times, the listener might even sense that someone in the band has been listening to jazz, and it is sneaking into the metal. --Metal Bulletin Zine

If it actually has the word gore in the band's name, it is understandable if some people might be expecting song titles like "Me, Myself, and I, Zombie," "From Zombie Enslavement to Zombie Obliteration," and "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Zombie Betrayal (I Know You're Loving Another Zombie." Gorephilia is their name now but they used to be called Goretexx and back in the days of 2007 they were gore obsessed and they had song titles like "Buried Under Your Feet" and they called one of their demos "Gorehearsal." Later on, they got jobs at the local bank, became information network specialists, robotics engineeers, and politicians in the Finnish parliament so they had to be more mature. Hence, Gorephilia instead of Goretexx. Big difference, right?! Anyway, old-school death is the mission and Gorephilia is apparently on album number three. Ignore the name of the band and concentrate on the music, especially if direct, no-experimentation death is your cup of tea. The two advance songs may give the impression of blasting death, but that's not accurate. The band has its moments of speed, but we dare state that they actually prefer a midtempo-style of songs. Therefore, don't expect all-blasting death for the duration of the album. -Metal Bulletin Zine

The Waymaker (Finland/Sweden) debut album (power metal) out today

The new power metal band The Waymaker (Finland/Sweden) today released their debut self-titled album. It is a new band, but the musicians have plenty of experience. Power metal fans may be interested to know that this features the singer Christian Liljegren from the long-running Swedish power metal band Narnia. The Waymaker describes themselves as melodic metal but be sure that power metal and neoclassical metal are present on the album, of course. Lyrically, if you appreciate lyrics about faith in Jesus, then The Waymaker is the perfect combination of melodic, neoclassical Christian power metal. On other hand, if you want rocking power metal, then this album will satisfy that craving, too, even if the lyrics are not as important to you or if you at least would like lyrics that do not glorify murder, alcoholism, drugs, violence, hatred, and other things like that.
