interview: Sonic Prophecy
The American traditional heavy metal band Sonic Prophecy (from Salt Lake City, Utah) has a new album in 2018 called Savage Gods. The album is new, it was released in January, but the band itself has been making music for a decade, actually. This publication took this opportunity to find out more about the band and the new album. Shane, the band’s singer, answered the questions.
Hello, Sonic Prophecy. How are things for Sonic Prophecy in the state of Utah, United States? How is Salt Lake City for metal bands and for your band?
Shane: First off, thank you for having us be a part of the Metal Bulletin! Things are going very well for us here in Utah and we seem to be slowly gaining traction with the underground metal scene here in the U.S. We just keep putting out music and working to get our name out there, hoping to build our base.
Shane: Salt Lake City actually has a very deep and active heavy metal scene. It is mostly extreme bands, but it is getting more diverse every year! There is quite a bit of talent here along the Wasatch front! As for Sonic Prophecy, life is good and we are all excited for the release of our new album, Savage Gods, which was released worldwide on Rockshots Records January 19th! It’s always a kick to get the music out to the heavy metal community after toiling away on it for months and months!
Sonic Prophecy has been active for ten years?! Congratulations! I see on Metal Archives that you have a cool discography. How many members do you have from ten years ago? Ten years is definitely hard to do, especially playing a genre of music that gives you no money.
Shane: Thank you for the kind words! We have been at it for a decade now and no doubt about it, it is a labor of love! Like you said, we definitely are not in it for the money! We are fairly proud of all three of our albums and our EP. It’s interesting to look back at each record and remember the recording sessions and that particular moment in time. I was listening to A Divine Act of War the other day, prepping for the live shows coming up, and it really hit me how much our sound has continued to evolve and change over the last decade. We have definitely gotten a bit heavier and darker in sound as time has went on! No telling where we might go on the next one, but one thing is for sure, there is certainly more music to be written.
As for band members, I am now the sole remaining original member of the band! In some ways this is a good thing as each new musician has a tendency to bring their own influences and unique talents to each new album. Luckily, I have remained good friends with all of the talented musicians that have been in the band, so I still catch up with them from time to time and catch their other music projects when I can. Darrin Goodman (lead guitar) has been in the band for the longest period of time other than me and he and I have been the primary writers on the last two albums. Matt Lefevre (drums) also contributed to the writing on Savage Gods and his influence really helped to propel the songs on this album in directions Darrin and I probably wouldn’t have went. I count myself lucky to work with these guys!
What inspired the band’s formation? Were you going to gigs in your city at the time?
Shane: I have been into metal since I was very young and have always wanted to front a band. I am a huge fan of Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Dio, and many European power metal bands so when I had the chance to join a band called Ashen Legacy, one of the few traditional power metal bands in the state at the time, back in 2006, I jumped at the chance! When that band folded in 2008, I formed Sonic Prophecy with a few members of Ashen Legacy and we headed into the studio to record our first set of songs. I’ve always been inspired by the feeling heavy metal gives me as a listener and performer. It really is an extremely powerful style of music which as a person you either understand or you don’t. We get it, your readers get it, and I hope the more people that get exposed to it, the more traditional metal can grow here in the States.
Sonic Prophecy is traditional heavy metal. Extreme metal is more popular in the U.S., metal with growling. Was it difficult to find a singer for the band in Utah? Many people can scream and growl, but singing is more difficult. What attracted you all to playing a more traditional form of music?
Shane: It was actually the other way around! I had to look very hard to find any bands that wanted a more traditional singer rather than a growler/screamer. There were literally only 2 or 3 bands active at the time in Utah that were not fronted by extreme vocalists, so I really got lucky when I found the guys in Ashen Legacy! While I am in awe of some of the extreme vocalists out there, and what they can do with their voices, I have always been more inclined to listen to traditional styles of metal, so for me it really boiled down to making the music that had been banging around in my head and that music is in the NWOBHM, traditional, and power metal genres.
The new 2018 album is called Savage Gods. Can you tell us about the lyrical concepts throughout the album? Are your lyrics based on fantasy? On what you see in Utah? On something else? What can you tell us?
Shane: With Savage Gods Sonic Prophecy covered quite a bit of territory lyrically. As the main lyric writer I try to tell a story with each song, matching the lyrics to the feeling that the music invokes. The music on Savage Gods was fairly dark and heavy so the lyrics tended to move in that direction as well. This record has songs dealing with everything from war, conquests, and nightmares, to watching a storm roll in over the Arizona desert, and traveling the high seas. My lyrics are influenced by my own personal experiences, world events, fantasy, science, movies, and things that I read. Every song is written to stand alone, which in my opinion makes for a very eclectic collection of songs that we hope fans of our style of music will enjoy!
I hope you are not offended with this question. I think you already know that people have stereotypes about Utah and Mormons. What is your opinion of living in Utah, in a state where Mormonism is the religion for many people? I find that some people have very negative opinions about Utah and Mormons. Have you had to deal with ignorance, arrogance and stereotypes because your band is not from the big cities like Los Angeles or New York?
Shane: I am not offended at all. That is a very interesting question. The short answer is no, I have not really dealt with ignorance or stereotyping due to being from Utah. I think that by and large most people are shocked that there is a heavy metal scene in Utah, due to the impression people have regarding Utah as a very religious state, but past that it really boils down to the music and if people are experiencing us live, the power of the music in the live setting.
Personally, I have never really thought too much about where the bands I like are from or what their personal backgrounds are. If I like the music, I like the music whether they are from Birmingham, England or Billings, Montana.
Sonic Prophecy shot a video that this publication shared with its readers. Where did you record the video?
Shane: First, thank you for sharing our video with your readers. We are a band that relies on word of mouth so we truly appreciate you putting us in front of your readership.
We shot the video at Haunted Hollow up in West Haven Utah with a company called Mac-Cinema. It was the perfect set for the video of “Night Terror” and since we shot it in October it already had the props in place and ready to go. The owners of Haunted Hollow could not have been any cooler. They allowed us the full use of the entire forest and all of the props on site. They were amazing to work with!
How many days did you work on that video?
Shane: We shot the video over two days, starting early in the morning and ending at midnight or later. It was fairly brutal!
Say, does it feel a bit silly for a heavy metal band to do a video in the desert with unplugged instruments?
Shane: It was really very weird at first. I mean, you have a generator roaring in the background running the lights and smoke machines, a PA system blasting the music to one side of you, and of course Matt, our drummer, playing at full tilt on the drums. It was all I could do to hear myself think! That said, once I settled into the part I just had fun with it! We are really very happy with the way it turned out and again, couldn’t have asked for a better set or crew of people to work with on it.
Does your band plan to do shows?
Shane: We absolutely are planning to play out supporting the album. We are hoping to do a western states tour with some possible dates in Canada later this summer. We would like to do more touring, but the reality is that touring is ridiculously expensive and can be hit and miss, so all of that has to be weighed prior to hitting the road. We will be posting dates on our Facebook site and official site as things are solidified.
When will people be able to hear the complete album?
Shane: The new album, Savage Gods, is out now and is available on all the streaming sites, stores and from our official site.
Where will it be available for streaming?
Shane: Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, and pretty much every streaming service there is.
For people who want to support your band, what is the best way to do that?
Shane: Thank you for asking this question! We actually do get money from digital sales as well as physical sales. Streaming services pay very little to the band per play, but we still appreciate people utilizing sites like Spotify and Pandora to find and listen to our music. At the end of the day though, if you like a band please buy the album, digital or physical, as that is really the only way we see any return on the album.
Some people think that they are supporting the bands by posting full albums on YouTube. How do you feel about that? Some musicians feel that YouTube is stealing from the artists. What do you think?
Shane: I personally do not have a problem with it, as I have found a lot of music on YouTube. Once I find the music though, I purchase it so I support the artist whose work I enjoy. To me that really is the key, not only as a heavy metal singer and songwriter but also as a fan. If I enjoy an artists’ work then I feel I should support them so that they can continue to be creative. A ton of time and money goes into producing an album. Everything from the artwork, to the studio time, to the marketing, it all costs money. YouTube is a great starting point, but from there it really is up to the individual to decide on how important the music is to them and if it is, then how best to support the music they enjoy. Underground metal is not a money making endeavor, it is done because the bands love doing it, but with that comes the reality that we are completely reliant on the fans to support it and keep it alive. A like on Facebook is great, but if people really want to keep the scene alive then buy the music, come to the shows, buy a shirt, and support the bands you dig.
After ten years of making metal music, what are you the most proud of that you have accomplished?
Shane: It has to be the actual albums themselves. Every album is a stepping stone to where you want to go creatively on the next album. I love writing music and I love that there is a small audience of people that get a kick out of listening to what we as a band create. It is great to be a part of the U.S. underground heavy metal scene and also, on a small level, part of the overall global metal scene.
The band has lasted a long time and there is now a new album. Something keeps fanning the flames of heavy metal within the hearts of Sonic Prophecy. What keeps you going as an underground heavy metal band in the United States?
Shane: Really it is the creative outlet. I love starting with a riff or vocal melody and then working with Darrin and Matt to create our next song. Working with such talented musicians, whose focus is to make the best music we can, is still one of the biggest thrills in my life. The day it becomes work is the day I will hang it up.
In the music industry there are a lot fakers. Fashions. Trends. Hype and all that stuff. For people looking for genuine bands, real people who are in it for the long haul, what can you tell us about Sonic Prophecy that makes you a real band, a humble band? What do you think is real and honest about your band?
Shane: I think the thing for me is that we are honest in our approach to the music. We do not write music for the masses or even for what is trending in metal. We write the music we want to make and we take pride in the music we put out. From the songs we write, to the quality of the production, to the artwork, we take all of it seriously. None of us has any delusions of fortune and fame and all of us are proud of our underground status. We are also huge lifelong fans of heavy metal and work to support other bands in the underground scene. As small as the underground traditional metal scene is, there is no place for egos, self-aggrandizing, or petty bullshit. It’s about the music, period. I think the people who are part of the underground scene understand this is and that is what makes it something we are proud to be a part of.
Do you have any other news about your band?!
Shane: Only that the new album, Savage Gods, is out now via Rockshots Records and we hope your readers will give it a listen! If they like it, pick up a copy and come to a show if and when we hit your town! All of the touring info, as we get it hammered out, and band info can be found at our website or on Facebook.
Thank you for having us be a part of The Metal Bulletin! We appreciate it!

Eldritch's upcoming new album Cracksleep
Progressive Metal veterans Eldritch have revealed the details of their upcoming new album ‘Cracksleep’, which will be released on March 23, 2018 on Scarlet Records.
The tracklist is as follows:
Cracksleep (intro)
Reset
Deep Frost
Aberration Of Nature
My Breath
Silent Corner
As The Night Crawls In
Voices Calling
Staring At The Ceiling
Night Feelings
Hidden Friend
Artwork duties have been handled by Federico Mondelli (Be The Wolf).
This new album has been described by the band as the most diverse to date, mixing early-era Eldritch with some of their latest influences, technically challenging instrumental parts with dark atmospheres and arrangements, enriched by a lyrical concept that deals with some of the most common causes of insomnia. ‘Cracksleep’ has been produced by Eugene Simone, with recordings taking place between October and December 2017 At Bigwave Studios in Livorno, Italy, the ES Studios in Rosignano Marittimo, Italy and mixed at Domination Studios in San Marino by Simone Mularoni.
Biography:
Looking at the musical development of ELDRITCH, you will find out how hard and concentrated the band – established in 1991 – has worked over all these years to get to their current level. Influenced by bands as FATES WARNING, ANNIHILATOR, QUEENSRYCHE and CORONER, the ex-Zeus musicians Eugene Simone (guitar), Adriano Dal Canto (drums) and Terence Holler (vocals) form ELDRITCH. With the completing of the line-up and the release of two high quality demo tapes, interest in the band grows – already in 1993, the band finds a competent manager and music publisher in Limb Schnoor.
1995, the combo releases its debut album "Seeds Of Rage" at INSIDE OUT MUSIC, which is showered with brilliant reviews and voted album of the month in the renowned German Metal Magazine "Heavy, oder was!?".
Two years later, ELDRITCH follow up with "Headquake" – and again the potential of the band shows through. Also, that year is topped off with a performance at the "Gods Of Metal" festival in Milan in front of more than 10.000 people. The year ends with an extraordinarily successful tour through Europe, together with ANGRA.
1998, ELDRITCH release "El Nino", their third album, and at the same time, they strike a musically rougher path. Bands as METALLICA, CORONER or ANNIHILATOR have influenced this album noticeably. The media and the fans acknowledge the broadening of the musical horizon, which results in rising sales and extremely positive reviews. The band is successfully on tour with THRESHOLD + PAIN OF SALVATION and ELDRITCH are celebrated by many fans as trendsetter in the international Prog Metal scene. In the meantime, the line-up has changed, leading to a positive musical input in the band structure.
The fan community had to wait a solid three years for a new album. 2001, "Reverse" is released and surprises again: the band has gotten yet more complex and harder. Bands as MACHINE HEAD and PANTERA left their marks in the musical cosmos of ELDRITCH. Critics are stunned by another performance at the legendary "Gods Of Metal" festival, and the fans support the new musical direction. The band is also enforced by a rhythm guitar player and produced three video clips – among others, they did a cover version of THE KNACK's smash hit "My Sharona"!
Again, three years pass until the next album. When "Portrait Of The Abyss Within" is released in 2004, the band had undergone another line-up change and has signed a new contract with Limb Music Products. Musically, "Portrait Of The Abyss Within" emerges as the most multifaceted and versatile album done by ELDRITCH. The band has worked in skillfully all the previous influences which enthuses as well the media as the fans. The quintet has found its final style, which is pursued consequently on their album "Neighbourhell" (2006). ELDRITCH even extend this style and break away from their competitors for good. Worthmentioning is definitely the successful, but yet headstrong interpretation of the FAITH NO MORE classic 'From Out To Nowhere', which can be found as one of two bonus tracks (plus video clip) on the excellently designed digipak of "Neighbourhell". The band has supported this album with some important festivals like CHICAGO POWERFEST 2006 (first USA appearance) as HEADLINERS! They also played at Italy’s big summer event EVOLUTIONFEST and other Italian shows as headliners... In the year 2007 the band recorded the 7th album "Blackenday" in a particular dark mood. The 15 songs are extremely catchy and the music is still aggressive as the previous work. Songs like "The Blackened Day", "The Deep Sleep", "Silent Flame", "Hold On" and many others, will stick in your heads like never!! On the ballad "Broken Road" there are 2 special guest musicians such as : RAY ALDER (Redemption, Fates Warning, Engine) and NICHOLAS VAN DYK (Redemption) that gave their special touch to the song. There's also a great videoclip for the "The Blackened Day" done by the director Mirco Andreis (Italy). The artwork is done by NERVE design (Italy). What else? Just one thing, Eldritch's music is quite unique and hard to describe, but one thing is sure: it's Melodic/Hard/Heavy/Thrash metal!! During summer 2007, after the Gods of Metal and the Sweden Rock fests, the band decided to replace the drummer Dave Simeone with the young and explosive Raffahell Dridge. This due to personal reasons between the band and Dave, but in a friendly way. In November 2008 the band finally released their first official live "Livequake" (in this case a double live album plus a dvd of the entire 2 hour show and some raritees). Another European tour as openers for the greek metal gods Firewind from November 2008 to January 2009 and then other shows in Italy till the end of the yearÉ another bit of Italian headliner shows during the whole 2010 and then the band entered the recording studios..... The band is now ready to record the 8th studio album (should be titled "Gaia's Legacy") and is going back to the sound of the first era, that means ultra progressive, technical, thrashy metal with keys and pianos. The lyrics are a concept about global warming effects, climate change and whatever has to do with Mother Nature and our planet..... There's a new second guitar player that replaced Pek Proietti, his name is Rudj Ginanneschi, a real axe killer!! The new official keyboard player is Gabriele Caselli (ex Domine), which is giving the new album a really progressive and modern touch! Eldritch are officially confirmed for Atlanta's PROGPOWER U.S.A. fest on September 2011...... not bad at all!!!! Now, after a few headlining shows in their home country during the last 2 years, the band put their effort in this new fresh album “Tasting The Tears” which will be released on February 17th in Europe and 18th 2014 in the U.S.A. and remaining territories. The reviews so far confirmed that it’s a real masterpiece!! The band replaced the bass player John Crystal (after 10 years) with the new talented Alessio Consani and right-after decided to go on without the keyboard player/pianist Gabriele Caselli, using the keyboards only in the studio (played by Eugene Simone) without replacing him on stage. The band now is a 5-piece. During Spring/Summer of 2015 the band recorded the 10th studio album (using the same team as the previous one) titled “Underlying Issues” out worldwide on November. The reviews so far are more than amazing!! This new album is another step forward in the band’s songwriting … Catchy as hell but still technical and progressive as the second single and videoclip "The Face I Wear" shows! The most important live gigs of the Underlying Issues promotion were in March 2017 when the band plays two shows as special guests for Russell Allen's Metal for autism tour.

Rise Of Avernus (review by Matt Spall)
Artist: Rise Of Avernus
Album Title: Eigengrau
Label: Code666
Date Of Release: 19 January 2018
2018 is staking a claim for being the year for extreme symphonic metal to take over the world. I’m only a week into the New Year and already, the two strongest releases to date are both could both claim to share this loose genre. First up was symphonic death/black metal band Bleeding Gods and now I am confronted with the long and eagerly-awaited sophomore album from Rise of Avernus.
Formed in Sydney around 2011, the Australian trio of Ben VanVollenhoven (Vocals, Guitar, Orchestrations), Andrew Craig (Drums & Percussion), and Mares Refalaeda (Vocals & Keyboards) are however, more accurately described as symphonic death/doom metal. It’s a subtle distinction on paper I’ll grant you and the core principles of the music are very similar. But overall, when you press play, the differences are more marked.
I remember reviewing the debut full-length, ‘L’Appel Du Vide’ way back in 2013 and, to quote that generally positive review, I wrote that: “their own brand of melodic and symphonic doom metal is pretty damn good. It won’t win any awards for originality but the overall result is such that this can almost entirely be forgiven.”
The good news is that I feel I can be even more positive about the follow-up, ‘Eigengrau’. In very simple terms, the album thematically explores human emotions, personal realities and the effects on these by external factors such as religious or spiritual indoctrination. And it has got the basics right; the production, enhanced by the mixing and mastering of ex-Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader (Gojira, Fear Factory) is excellent, providing clarity, warmth and guts, whilst the Seth Anton artwork is immediately both striking and dark in tone.
Moving on to the music itself and ‘Eigengrau’ is comprised of eight compositions which together, clock in at just under the 50 minute mark. And, for once true to the accompanying press release, ‘Eigengrau’ is most definitely a darker, more grandiose affair than that of their debut, not to mention more cinematic and dramatic. For my money, it also boasts plenty more originality and sophistication than the debut.
The album kicks off in dramatic style with ‘Terminus’ thanks to orchestration that sounds like it could easily have been a lost piece from Howard Shore’s writing sessions for Lord Of The Rings. The bold and sinister industrial-sounding soundscape helps to set the dark tone of the record and, after a minute when the guitars, bass and drums join the party, you realise the intro was no red herring. Blastbeats, bruising riffs and venomous, savage vocals that plumb the depths all make their individual marks, as do the gregarious keys and further orchestrated elements. It all combines to great effect, producing a multi-layered and rich listening experience. As the track matures, a greater sense of melody seeps in which only enhances my fondness for the song. It is led by a mournful lead guitar line and then accented by a deep and groove-laden doom riff alongside ever-more grandiose orchestration, all of which help to create a breathless, epic conclusion.
The dichotomy between lush orchestration and frantic blast beats is intriguing as ‘Ad Infinitum’ replaces its predecessor. For me though, it is the truly epic chorus that makes this song the huge success that it undoubtedly is. Together with the keyboards, the orchestration actually seeks to provide a lighter, less oppressive atmosphere that has a sense of positivity to it, culminating in a closing crescendo that’s full of beauty and verve within the pervading gloom. I’ve always been a sucker for a soulful guitar melody and this song delivers.
A tip of the hat has to then go to the band and ‘Gehenna’, because not only do the Australians introduce ethnic touches to the song by way of the voice at the beginning, but they are able to offer a song that doesn’t deviate too far from their intense blueprint whilst also sounding catchy and immediate. The melodies are once again glorious but the inclusion of clean vocals within the chorus is the clincher for me. It only happens once and before long the gruff growls return. But the fleeting Gothic splendour is well-placed and hugely effective.
A personal favourite at the current time has to be the moody and spirited ‘Igenlicht’. It has a majestic feel to that is infectious whilst I really enjoy the changes in pace within it. At time, it charges along at high speed whereas at others, the track is reined-in and much more ponderous. The atmospheric minimalist middle act is full of suspense and melancholy but the way in which it builds back up is the biggest delight for me, teasing us with hope before reverting back to the oppressive and heavy gloom of before, albeit accompanied by a higher-pitched black metal-like rasp and all-encompassing orchestration.
‘Tempest’ meanwhile toys with different vocal effects that remind me a little of modern Dimmu Borgir, whilst allowing the symphonic elements to come to the fore just that little bit more, making a more theatrical statement in the process. ‘Forged In Eidolon’ continues to throw up vague similarities to the aforementioned Norwegians but this is forgotten at the half-way mark as the song takes a turn into more melodic territory. The heaviness drops away and what replaces it is scintillating; so subtle, so graceful and so serene, it is wonderful, particularly the bass work and the chosen guitar tone.
At less than four minutes in length, ‘Mimicry’ is easily the shortest track on the record but it in no way packs any less of a punch. It features moments that are pure cinema, whilst I love the drumming, which suits the more theatrical surroundings perfectly.
And then there’s the closing epic, ‘Into Aetherium’. I adore the slow and deliberate intro where crushing, resonating guitar notes are juxtaposed with bright piano notes, only for it all to be replaced with some black metal staccato riffs and then something much more experimental in tone. It is easily the most ambitious composition on ‘Eigengrau’ and its crowning glory is the quieter, more contemplative section that replaces the preceding aggression. Again, the song builds expertly to then continue the quieter melodies within the ensuing final onslaught.
I love it when a band delivers on the promise that they show in the early days and that’s exactly what Rise of Avernus has done here. I liked their debut, but I love the follow-up. Bigger, bolder, more mature and expertly delivered, ‘Eigengrau’ is the album that you must have in your life if you worship at the altar of symphonic death/doom metal.

TREEDEON: German Sludge Trio To Release Under The Manchineel LP Via Exile On Mainstream In February
NEWS: German trio TREEDON will release their monstrous second LP, Under The Manchineel, this February through their allies at Exile On Mainstream. Advancing the record's release, Decibel Magazine has premiered the crushing track, "Breathing A Vein."
Offers bassist/vocalist Yvonne Ducksworth, "We recorded Under The Manchineel at Studio Wong in Berlin; they have a great Live setup for us. The song "Breathing a Vein" surprised me; turned out to be one of our favorite songs on the record. As far as vocals: it really melds what Arne and I do best to accompany one another. The song lyrics are echoing that as well: Two opposites who manage to belong together."
Decibel issues with their debut of the song, "There is a legion of sludge metal bands out there today that have pushed the genre's extremity and direction in new and exciting ways, but few do it like TREEDEON. The instrumental side of their music draws heavily from doom and noise, as well as sludge, moving at a thick, crushing pace. Vocally is where TREEDEON set themselves apart, as you'll hear on 'Breathing A Vein.' The dueling vocals of Yvonne Ducksworth and Arne Heesch dance from clean and bright to throat-ripping shrieks and back, creating an added dynamic to the new song."
TREEDEON returns with the follow-up to their debut, Lowest Level Reincarnation, which was released some three years ago. The bruising second album, Under The Manchineel marks the arrival of a new drummer Andy Schuenemann, of post-rock instrumental duo Alphatrip, joining bassist/vocalist Yvonne Ducksworth and vocalist/guitarist Arne Heesch, and taking the band in an even heavier direction.
The seven tracks on Under The Manchineel have foundations in sludge, noise, and doom, also incorporating unexpected melodies into their colossal wall of sound. This thunderous catharsis, reaches levels of emotional intensity previously untapped within the album's forty-five-minute lifespan. The lyrics are fueled by a multitude of political issues including general disenchantment with world events, and the current world order. The track "Manchineel" -- one of the album's many highlights -- is a clear example of this as raging vocals of lyrical angst target all the forces declaring war on our society and our planet.

IGNITOR's 'Haunted by Rock and Roll' Out Now on EMP Label Group
NEWS: Austin (TX) - U.S. Heavy Metal torchbearers IGNITOR released Haunted by Rock & Roll on Dave Ellefson's (MEGADETH) EMP Label Group late last year. One of 2017's most exciting and undeniably authentic metal albums, Haunted by Rock & Roll can be purchased at the link below.
Haunted By Rock & Roll introduces heavy metal fans to arguably IGNITOR's strongest lineup to date and their definitive metallic statement. Featuring eight new original anthems of leather clad glory including "Hatchet (The Ballad of Victor Crowley)" as featured on the official motion picture soundtrack for the 2017 "Victor Crowley" slasher film and a cover of "Hung, Drawn and Quartered" by NWOBHM legends (and EMP labelmates) RAVEN.
EMP label owner/founder Dave Ellefson (MEGADETH) who serves as Executive Producer on Haunted By Rock & Roll has been instrumental in attaining a larger audience for IGNITOR and the sky is now the limit for the band that debuted with a record entitled "Take To The Sky."
BIO: Formed in 2003 by founding Agony Column guitarist Stuart "Batlord" Laurence and drummer Pat Doyle formerly of punk legends The Offenders; IGNITOR set out to create the kind of true heavy metal their contemporaries in the Austin, Texas metal scene were lacking. Unabashedly loud and forceful yet retaining all of the sonic spirit and hallmarks of the golden years of heavy metal.
Enduring lineup changes along the way found IGNITOR replacing original vocalist Erica Swinnich with the iconic pipes of Jason McMaster (Watchtower, Dangerous Toys, Broken Teeth, Evil United) a much revered elder statesman in Texas metal circles, who was introduced on the "Spider Queen" album in 2007.
In early 2015 IGNITOR would recruit guitarist Robert Williams (Witches Mark) and bassist Billy Dansfiell (Agony Column) beginning a near three year campaign of introducing metal fans to the newly reinvigorated lineup with some scorching live performances in support of such metal titans as Grim Reaper, Helstar, Jag Panzer, Raven and Cage and familiarizing audiences with the songs that would ultimately become the Haunted By Rock & Roll album.

BULLET To Release New Album "Dust To Gold" April 20th via SPV/Steamhammer
NEWS: If you want to understand how Swedish metal act Bullet works, you only have to take one look at the ancient tour bus that the five musicians have been conquering the world with for years. The black, white and red 1964 Volvo B63508, lovingly referred to as the "Bullet Bus", with its indestructible six-cylinder engine and countless miles under its frayed seats, the band's mobile hotel. Mind you: perhaps hotel isn't quite the operative word, (youth) hostel would be more to the point, the van's interior having accumulated an attractive odour composed of petrol, sweat, beer and a diverse range of tobacco blends in its interior. "In the years that we've been travelling from show to show in our van and have visited countless festivals, our Bullet Bus has never let us down," guitaristHampus Klang phrases a kind of declaration of love to the vintage vehicle that features on the cover of the group's latest album Dust To Gold for a good reason. "The Volvo has more than earned its place on the front cover, because in its own way it's just like we are: hard as nails, resilient and full of priceless memories."
The Bullet Bus as a synonym for a band philosophy that could hardly be more compelling. Bullet from Växjö have been on the metal scene since 2001, released five excellent studio albums to date, toured most European countries several times, opened for AC/DC in front of 55,000 people in 2009 and played some of Europe's most prestigious festivals, such as Rock Am Ring, Graspop, Sweden Rock, Bang Your Head, Rock Hard, Keep It True, Headbangers Open Air and Wacken (twice!). The band has eaten dirt in the true sense of the word and transformed it into musical gold, as their programmatic album title hints. "Our new songs are about life on the road, about freedom, adventure and the endless fun that passionate metal bands have," Hampus Klang explains. Their love of their lives as musicians oozes from every single note, be it the fast-paced opener Speed And Attack in classic NWOBHM style, the powerful singalong anthem Fuel The Fire` or the cool, grooving midtempo track Wildfire that AC/DC couldn't have done better.
Dust To Gold was mixed and produced from August to December 2017 at the Pama Studios in Sweden, by Bullet and Mankan Sedenberg, who consciously used an analogue tape machine to give the recording a warm sound. Hampus is extremely happy with the result: "We spent much more time on the songwriting than we did with previous albums. The whole production took a bit longer this time but we think it was worth it. We wanted an album where every song is a great one, totally without fillers. We also worked hard to make the sound as honest and authentic as possible and it sounds a lot more like we do live."

favorite album of the week: January 14-20, 2018
Looking over the albums available to this publication, there were some good albums released last week. In particular, I find that two albums grabbed my attention.--MMB
Noturnall
9
Rockshots Records
19 January 2018
Personally, I find Noturnall to be a very good combination. They do many things right. First of all, they roll power metal, traditional heavy metal, progressive metal, and a bit of thrash into a young, bouncy, uptempo album that is both headbanging and memorable. As a power prog band they have also one indispensable element that is right, and that’s the drumming. The drumming has a very good energy and it sounds like metal drumming, and it means a lot for the sound of the band because it results in an album that rocks. I don’t hear any weaknesses, it’s a fun album and the songs are efficient. Most of all, the songs are memorable and they exude not just talent, but a lot of skill in the execution of the music itself and in the up-to-date production. It appears that they hooked up with the right people to give the album a current sound.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. The singing works very well with the band’s style and the band’s tendency to sway around various subgenres as a coherent style. Speaking for myself, I find the singing good. I wonder how it sounds live in real life, but on the album the singing certainly can match the quality and power of the songs. This album is a keeper for sure. A winner all the way.

Nydvind
Seas of Oblivion
Malpermesita Records
19 January 2018
Nydvind has really impressed me with this album of maritime-themed metal. The band’s midtempo/uptempo melodic extreme metal takes ideas from black metal, like much of the vocals and the tremolo/melodies, and gives it all a current production and runs it through the filter of epic metal. I liked the album at first and it caught my attention, but once I began to look further within I uncovered something much bigger than I realized at first. Given that the album is very long (over an hour) and the band does a lot with that time, let’s find the threads that keep it all together. Perhaps one of the most characteristic components of the album is the huge effort to make a work that reveals the dedication that went into it. It’s a band that is thinking big. The epic seafaring metal comes across loud and clear, and since it is a serious endeavor, once the listener gets a taste of it, there should be more interest in exploring the entire album with more patience.
The songs have some slower moments that are placed well, but this is unequivocally an uptempo album and there is lots of an energy of melodic black metal, including some segments of blasting. In that sense, it is paced well, too. In my own impression of the album, I feel like it is mostly uptempo, in varying degrees, and it has an awesome maritime vibe. The vocals are mostly extreme metal, and often show a lineage of the black metal family tree. Surprisingly, there are some melodic vocals that are an important additional dimension. This album has many strengths and after hearing it in its entirety several times I am still very impressed with it. Fans of epic extreme metal should put this album on their list. It’s a big success for the band.

interview: Born Without Blood
Brutal metal cavemen Born Without Blood have been making a name for themselves in the Seattle region by giving the audiences intense extreme metal. They have been breaking in a new growler, and things are coming along well, as you will read here. The gunslinger Justin Metal answered these questions about the band’s current activities.
What’s happening with Born Without Blood, and who are the members of the band?
We are looking forward to an exciting year of melting faces off! Justin Metal (founder/ guitarist), Kyle Huntress (guitarist), Erick Pacheco (bassist), Scott Sandefur (drummer), Taylor Waugh(vocals)
Is Born Without Blood a relatively new band?
Kind of, we are definitely still growing in the scene. It started as a project in 2011 and grew from there. We have been actively playing out for 2 years now.
Tell us about your recorded music.
We had some music on YouTube, but since we changed vocalist we have been working on our first EP. We are about to release our first EP.
What about playing shows?
We love playing shows! Playing shows is the best way to get your name out there so we tried to take every show given to us.
What are some problems that you have had to overcome?
It was pretty tough finding a solid front person. We've gone through 3 "permanent" vocalists before our current vocalist Taylor who is super dedicated and willing to improve his skills. Not a problem per se but it's also rough playing shows on Tuesday nights for the door guy, bartender, and another band, but paying those dues has had great rewards in the past few months.
Are there plenty of venues in the Seattle area?
Totally, almost too many. Seattle has a very saturated music scene in many genres and there are tons of venues we can play, but nowadays it's more about getting on a quality bill where lots of people who never saw us before will be at.
Does everyone agree on the music style? How do you describe it?
Our mission statement from the beginning has been to be brutal and heavy, so no one really taken issue with our sound. We are, how do I put it, blackened melodic death metal. We are influenced by the old school death metal and thrash.
Have you found good studios to record?
We recorded our upcoming EP at Birdhouse Studios in Ballard. Finding a good studio in terms of price/quality/availability can be a challenge, though.
Do you have any other news?
We are planning to release our first EP in the next month or so. And we are playing our 2nd anniversary show at the Monkey Pub in the u-district (Seattle) on February 24th.

SODOM Announce New Line-Up!
TOM ANGELRIPPER ANNOUNCES NEW LINE-UP
German Cult Thrash Act Now A quartet, Frank Blackfire Returns
New Single Out In Summer 2018, Album To Follow In Spring 2019
While rumors are still flying thick and fast in the media, Tom Angelripper has already announced the new line-up of his band Sodom: Husky (Asphyx, Desaster) is set to man the drum kit, Frank Blackfire (ex-Sodom, ex-Kreator, Frank Blackfire, Assassin) and Yorck Segatz (Beyondition) have been enlisted on guitars. Sodom have already released seminal albums such as Persecution Mania, the live cut Mortal Way Of Live and the highly successful Agent Orange with Frank Blackfire. As he had hinted at the beginning of the year, Tom has opted for a line-up featuring two guitarists, an absolute novelty for Sodom. "Two guitarists allow us much more possibilities live, so we will be able to play tracks in future that we weren't able to perform as a trio," the Sodom vocalist/bassist explains his motives. In line with these new possibilities, the thrash act has already started to put together a setlist for the upcoming shows with all important classics as well as rare numbers that had never or only rarely been heard at their gigs. Says Tom: "I can promise that we will really let it rip in future."
In Frank Blackfire, Yorck Segatz and Husky, Tom has consciously gone for musicians from his own background. "It's common knowledge that all three are exceptional instrumentalists and that heavy metal is their life. But Sodom is also about getting on on a personal level. The new band members are all dyed-in-the-wool Sodom fans and all live in Essen. Need I say more?"
While the guys have just moved into their new rehearsal room (Tom: "As it happens exactly where it all started back in 1982!"), the Sodom mastermind is already looking to the future. "We'll start writing new material as soon as possible and plan to release a single with at least two brand-new numbers and a bonus track to give our fans a taste of our upcoming album," he promises. "The direction of the new material already stands: ready for action and full of adrenaline, Sodom are set to celebrate the glorious days of the 1980s old school thrash that we all grew up with and that the band has always been celebrated for."
