Hour of Penance (Italy) has a new album: Regicide (Prosthetic Records)

Hour of Penance: “Regicide” (Prosthetic Records)
I sometimes get the impression that whenever a metal band is the object of praise, some attitudes often react with cynicism because some listeners really do perceive themselves as standing apart from what they reject (mainstream music culture, including metal, for example), as a means to express a mark of uniqueness or a contrarian attitude. Case in point, dismissive views have labeled Hour of Penance a blasting one-trick pony or a Behemoth clone. Sometimes, favorable reviews highlight the speed, that it is fast, intense, so on and so forth, which can also be a polite way of saying that it is an ok band with somewhat repetitive songs. In other words, “Oh, no, here we go again, another death metal band that I don’t like.”
My own experience listening to this album was interesting from the beginning: the blasting “technical/brutal death metal” of Hour of Penance made the sense on the first listen. Frequently, this style takes several listens before I feel like I comprehend the proceedings. I could not possibly name all the reasons why Hour of Penance makes sense so quickly, but I submit that there are at least three main reasons why.
First, the drumming caught my attention, in part, because it’s easy for a listener to connect with a beat. Metal with fast drumming is fun and I can never get enough of it. Nevertheless, Hour of Penance is certainly not the “fastest” ever, although it is assuredly a blasting album from start to finish. As I already knew what to expect in terms of speed, what caught my attention was not the blasting. It’s something else that the drummer is doing. For lack of better or more precise terminology, I will say: in between or despite the blasting, there is something curious going on; it’s a whole series of beats, of patterns that sneak in the brief spaces arising at this warp-speed drumming; in the interstices of the frenzy, there are lots of small details that somehow add up to give the album a creative, a distinctive face from other “technical/brutal” blasting albums.
Second, the guitar work is a balance between tendonitis-inducing wizardry and memorable hooks, all done at a blasting pace, of course. I like the fact that I can hear the riffs and that it is not simply chugging away with play-on riffs. The guitar work is an attractive proposition for the listener wanting to hear the guitar, while still hoping for technical/fast playing. It does not go totally over your head, but it is undoubtedly on the shredding side of death metal; the equilibrium between speed, control, chaos, absurd and even a bit of melody works well for the band.
Finally, I feel that the elements—the drumming, guitars and the growling—make up complete songs, compositions that the willing listener can consolidate in her or his mind with the feeling that the music may be talented or fast or extreme, but at bottom, it’s a fun listen. It seems to me that these compositions have the key components that the listener partial to “modern/extreme death metal” will approve in a big way, as there is here much to enjoy.
May 13th is the day for this album.

prog metal from Bangladesh: Artcell

Artcell is a prog metal band from Bangladesh. Explorers of metal into prog styles would definitely find Artcell's work to be commendable and worthy of spending time listening to it. It is not clear how active they are at the moment, but they have been around for years and years. Be kind and write to the band and see if they tell you what is the current situation and how to get the music. They would love to hear from you, from the corner of the world where you are. -- This is the band's bio.
Life is a song. Love is the music, music is the art of thinking with sounds.. Music is Artcell.
Artcell is a Progressive metal band of Bangladesh. The band is arguably the first Progressive Metal band of the country and usual

metal from Bangladesh: Abominable Carnivore

If you like the music get in contact with the band! Here's a bit of info and hear some of their songs below.
--
The band's bio: ABOMINABLE CARNIVORE is a black\ death metal act, that was formed in Dhaka, Bangladesh in March 2011. The band is the brainchild of two musicians, Demodulated and Astaroth. They were friends and shared same musical interests and thinkings. To express themselves, the two formed the band and were joined by Morax on Guitar, Xezbeth on Bass, Ohee on Drums while Astaroth were also on Guitars and Demodulated handled Vocals.
Soon after the formation, the band started rehearsaling together and the musical direction was clear. The band drew inspiration from infamous Dissection, Necrophobic and other sinister acts such as Watain, Thulcandra, Black Horizons and likes. Their black\ death approach on music was enriched with dark, occult lyrics and furious performances and mastery of musical skills.
It was then when they were serious about their own material and started working on it. They were composing their own songs but parted by their drummer, Ohee. The replacement of him was found in Malphas, who joined in soon.
They signed a record contract with local record label “Dust and Guilt Records” and entered into studio in December, 2011. The songs were recoded and released as “Light Devours Our Lust” EP on January 26, 2012. The songs from the release showed the death tinged black metal tendencies from their cited influences. The EP contains seven tracks, including an Intro and an Outro, all displaying morbid and occult words spit out in darker, evil, extreme way.
ABOMINABLE CARNIVORE’s current line-up consists of Demodulated (Vocals), Astaroth (Guitars), Morax (Guitars), Necromancer (Bass) and Malphas (Drums).

JEREMY IRONS & THE RATGANG MALIBUS: Full Album + Video From Psychedelic Space Rock Perpetrators Now Playing At The Obelisk

In celebration of tomorrow's official unveiling via Small Stone Recordings, today the volume peddlers at The Obelisk offer up a full stream of Spirit Knife, the newest full-length from Swedish psychedelic space rock perpetrators, JEREMY IRONS & THE RATGANG MALIBUS, alongside the official video for first single, "Wind Seized."
Dubbed "a blissful mixture of Soundgarden at their grooviest and Pink Floyd, creating a terrific album of sunny day, top down, cruising music," by Mass Movement, Spirit Knife was recorded at Puch Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, mixed by Viktor Källgren, produced by the JIRM collective and mastered by Chris Goosman (Early Man, Sasquatch, Dixie Witch, Solace et al) at Baseline Audio Labs in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Boasting an overwhelming deluge of guitar passages that rattle, roll, shimmy and soar with oceanic reverb that coil around thrumming keys and mesmerizing Motorik drums to incite cyclical hypnosis for protracted song-suites, JIRM achieves optimal tantric tension and release through sound. Envision Jeff Buckley jamming with Can, and you'll have a fair gist of the fantastic voyage that awaits the armies of the Spirit Knife; an album that finds JIRM rekindling their time-traveling communion with vintage psychedelia and Krautrock, while expanding on the sonic palette revealed by the ensemble's past full-lengths, Elefanta and Bloom.

BENEATH: The Barren Throne Now Playing In Its Entirety At Metal Hammer; Release Day Looms

With its official detonation now less than twenty-four hours away, the crypt keepers at Metal Hammer bring extreme metal fans the sordid sounds of The Barren Throne, the latest long player from Iceland-based death metal leviathans, BENEATH, in its entirety.
Formed in the winter of 2007/2008, the members of BENEATH have all been active in the Icelandic metal scene for some years, with current and former connections to Sororicide, Changer, Atrum, Azoic and Diabolus. Following their live debut supporting The Black Dahlia Murder in January 2009 and winning the inaugural Icelandic finals for the Wacken Open Air Metal Battle, BENEATH became the first Icelandic band to perform at the Wacken Open Air festival in August 2009. More festival appearances followed, amongst others Death Feast Open Air in 2010 and Neurotic Deathfest in 2011. In February 2010, BENEATH released their debut Hollow Empty Void EP on Mordbrann Musikk which landed them a union with Unique Leader Records.

LIONS OF TSAVO: Texas Metal/Sludge Trio Continues Spring Tour; Hear the Complete Album

Following the release of their Traverser LP via Toxic Assets in November, Austin's caustic sludge metal trio, LIONS OF TSAVO, continue to tour the American landscape in support of the album. The band is currently embarked on their latest trek with another five cities still in its path, including Atlanta this evening, April 28th, and Birmingham, Jackson, Shreveport and Dallas next to get slammed this week LIONS OF TSAVO plow homeward.
LIONS OF TSAVO Spring Tour [remaining dates]:
4/28/2014 529 Bar - Atlanta, GA
4/29/2014 The Forge - Birmingham, AL
4/30/2014 TBA - Jackson, MS
5/01/2014 Fatty Arbuckle's - Shreveport, LA
5/02/2014 Chichen Itza - Dallas, TX
After a long absence between releases, LIONS OF TSAVO returned with their long and winding third full-length manifesto, Traverser. While not far-removed from the attack shown on Firelung, the band splices in more breathing space in the newer material, and matched with their torrential onslaught of amplification, their debilitating, diverse alloy of metallic sludge is unquestionably more devastatingly memorable on Traverser. Eviscerating landscapes through blood spitting riffs and mind altering psychedelics, Traverser is both destruction and redemption incarnate; a conceptual album where the music, lyrics and artwork align, and cannot be separated. Washington-based Toxic Assets released the album on CD in November, while a vinyl edition remains on deck for release later in 2014.
Additional upcoming LIONS OF TSAVO live actions will be continually announced into the Summer months. In the meantime, stream all of Traverser www.lionsoftsavo.bandcamp.com www.facebook.com/lionsoftsavo

EXCEL: California Crossover Crew To Reissue Debut Split Image Via Southern Lord This August

Following their 2013 reunion, California hardcore/thrash metal crossover act, EXCEL, has since teamed up with Southern Lord who will now be reissuing their debut album, Split Image, this Summer.
Having their 1984 formation, EXCEL released three studio albums as well as a number of demos and singles. Equally influenced by punk rock and heavy metal in both attitude and delivery, the band's rabid musical approach and intelligent lyrics set them apart as a genre-defining act of the era. Produced by Randy Burns (Death, Possessed, Megadeth, Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies), Split Image was originally released through Suicidal and Caroline Records in 1987, and has since remained widely regarded as an elemental release as part of the '80s crossover explosion.
The upcoming Southern Lord reissue of Split Image will contain bonus material, including the Sonic Decapitation, Personal Onslaught and Refuse To Quit demos, their Welcome To Venice and Thrasher Magazine compilation tracks, plus alternative album cover art and a photo booklet which has never been previously released. It marks the first time the record shall be available on vinyl since it was originally released in 1987. EXCEL will also be releasing a replica of their second demo, Personal Onslaught, as a limited edition preorder item, also including their third demo Refuse To Quit on the b-side.
The current EXCEL lineup -- Dan Clements on vocals, Shaun Ross on bass, Mike Cosgrove on drums and Alex Barreto on guitar -- will continue this new chapter of the band, and will cross the continent to play an East Coast showcase at Brooklyn's Saint Vitus Bar on Tuesday June 17th.

KREATOR - EUROPEAN TOUR 2014 ANNOUNCED

News from Kreator. -- Following the release of last year’s highly acclaimed and critically hailed live DVD/Blu-ray »Dying Alive«, German thrash metal giants KREATOR now announce a tour for November/December 2014, leading the true „hordes of chaos“ throughout Europe as headliners, and with them a real high class selection of bands.
Joining KREATOR for the upcoming live shenanigans are Polish label mates VADER, Swedish death metal masters ARCH ENEMY and German thrash veterans SODOM.
Frontman Mille Petrozza comments: "A lot of our European fans voiced their discontent over the fact that the band hardly does European club tours – apart from our festival shows. In 2013 we were mainly busy playing for our fans overseas. We want to change this now. In time for the reissues of »Endless Pain«, »Pleasure To Kill« and »Extreme Aggression« in all kinds of formats – finally on vinyl again too - we`ll end the »Phantom Antichrist« tour cycle in Europe with a massive string of shows. This will be your last chance to see KREATOR live in clubs for quite a while, because we`ll be busy working on a new album in 2015 and only play carefully selected shows. Right now we`re working on a new multimedia stage show and we`ll also have a bunch of surprises in the setlist. Our friends of ARCH ENEMY are part of the trek to present their new album »War Eternal«, and so will VADER and our old companions SODOM. This tour will be KILLER!!!“

FREE EP of "melodic and growl metal" in Spanish from Spain: DISPLAY

"En la eternidad" is the title of this name-your-price recording of over 25 minutes. The quality of the recording is good and the band knows its skills very well. I would think that those into Soilwork would enjoy the music. It seems to me that Display has put together a rather impressive recording, in the sense of catchiness. It's a solid start for Display, who have only this recording so far, as far as I can tell. If you speak Spanish, great, and if you do not, that's great, too. At the end of the day, Display is about the language of melodic modern metal.

FREE EP of death/thrashing metal from Canada: Meggido

The six-song, almost-half hour EP launches an uptempo/midtempo energy of song-oriented heaviness, somewhere around the Pantera/Sepultura and Death/Obituary vibe; very direct, for immediate impact, but Meggido is not about speed, it's about heaviness, riffs, grooves and metal that's not too mathematical or confused about its own direction. "Old school" might not be a bad term here, and the recording is good quality, too. Check it for free name-your-price status at the link below. Metal Archives says that this is the band's first recording, and it's a good start.

FREE album of "melodic, metalcore-ish prog metal" from Germany: Phase Shift

"Lack of Silence" is the album called and it's 44 minutes. This free name-your-price album shows the band combining several genres, I think, and it's not so easy to put the band in one single category, although prog is probably the most correct. The band also shows that this is only the beginning for them, even though they have been around a while. The sound appears to be in flux all the time, so we'll have to see how things go from here. Progheads who like to hear new bands, here's one that you probably have not heard before. www.phaseshiftmetal.bandcamp.com

FREE album of groove thrash metalcore in Spanish: Puah (Venezuela)

This free name-your-price album is called "Kharma" and it is almost an hour of music, 14 songs. The music sounds reminiscent of the energy of 90s successful names in groove metal, with the more recent metalcore sound injected. If metalcore and 90s groove metal is your area, then perhaps you would enjoy a band from Venezuela doing a new take on it and in Spanish, although knowing Spanish is also not necessary to understand the groove. www.puahvzla.bandcamp.com

The doom of Obelyskkh (Germany) convinced me quickly.

Obelyskkh: Hymn To Pan (Exile On Mainstream)
Would you say that heavy stoner growl/melodic doom is your bag? The vibe is both stoner doom with growling, and traditional doom elements, including melody, and spacey/psychedelic components. The album shows a lot of work put into it; five songs over eight minutes, and the last, sixth track over 20 minutes. What the band also does that is different is that they have lots of uptempo-ish vibes, and that’s not normal in doom; so, it’s actually rocking doom. It’s a heavy-duty guitar tone, but the music sounds like fun, and rocking, which, again, it’s not what one thinks of with doom.
The vocals can sound kind of shouty at times, kind of punky, but switch to melodic vocals, too; not quite “smooth singing,” but surprisingly melodic and fitting, and providing a nice contrast with the other styles of vocals. After some 40 minutes, then it’s time for the last song, which is technically over 20 minutes, but these guys could be a bunch of jokesters, though: the first three minutes are music, then some seven of ambient/spacey sounds, then back to the main of the song; and towards the end, the psychedelia trippiness returns big time.
Doomheads that have not checked out this band should put this one on the list. Looking for doom that shows good songs and a good doom production? Seek. www.facebook.com/TheObelyskkhRitual

FREE death metal EP from Morocco/Switzerland: Blasphemyth

Blasphemyth: “Blasphemous Hordes of Obliteration”
The EP is a quick intro and one song proper. Leaning more on the “old school” side of death metal, the song has a very moshable, headbangable quality to it. The drumming is simple and direct, uptempo and fast, along with solid low growling, mixed in with a bit of shrieking. I hope this song is the beginning of more of what the band will be bringing in the future. The first link is how I got the EP; I hope it works for you, too. www.sendspace.com/file/nmbwty www.blasphemyth.bandcamp.com email: theophagous2005@gmail.com

When was the last time you heard a metal band from Andorra? progressive metal: NAMI

Nami has two albums: "Fragile Alignments" from 2011 and "The Eternal Light of the Unconscious Mind" (2013).
Fortunately for us, the band has the two albums for people to listen to at Bandcamp. The sound quality of the recordings is good, so no worries there. The music takes a bit to understand because it's not "instant gratification" metal or anything like that, but the band obviously has good songs and has plenty of talent, too.

raw, garage demo of traditional heavy metal from Mexico: Dyon

This demo is very raw and unpolished, but look it, they play traditional, screaming heavy metal and have their hearts in the right place. Plus, it's not another band with another angry dude screaming yelling growling about how much he "hates" this or that, blah, blah, blah. Dyon wants to play singing heavy metal and that's not a bad thing, not a bad thing at all.
