NEWS: Striker

Surprisingly, in 2017 the traditional, melodic heavy metal band Striker (Canada) has already released the album that follows up last year's wonderful Stand in the Fire. The new work is self-titled and the Canadians sound as energized and skilled as ever. As publications have observed, Striker represents the best qualities of the young generation of traditional heavy metal bands. The fans love the hooks, the rocking riffs, the great songs and the ear-friendly singing. Below you will find information about the album, along with excerpts of how reviewers have reacted to the new title.

Metal Archives: "'Striker' returns with a non-stop arsenal of songs and then it is back to back party time, so much that you can smell the beer, denim and leather emanating from the record as it burns through tracks such as 'Rock the Night', 'Freedom’s Call' and the final track with its fist in the air chorus, 'Curse of the Dead'."
The Headbanging Moose: "In case you’ve never heard of Canadian Heavy/Power Metal act Striker, there couldn’t be a better moment to get to know such distinct band and their classic mix of Heavy Metal, Hard Rock and 80’s Hair Metal ... After listening to this flammable metal album, I’m sure Striker will feature among your favorite bands of the past decade."
Metal Assault: "It only seems like yesterday when Canadian metal group Striker released their fourth full-length album ‘Stand in the Fire’, not only because the release date was less than a year ago, but more so because that album is still on the minds and playlists of those that were wise and fortunate enough to feast their ears upon it ... While ‘Stand in the Fire’ is an extremely dynamic record showcasing great variety and Striker’s full repertoire, the new one seems more focused and straightforward, yet they end up with an almost equally dynamic album anyway, because that’s just what comes naturally to these musicians, and their music shines because they do not curb their natural songwriting instincts. This is probably the most quintessential Striker album till date, and rightly self-titled."

review by Dee: Nornír

The following is a review by Dee of the latest work by Nornír (Germany). Below you can find more about Dee’s metal music and her other writings. At the end of the review you will also find a link to listen to Nornír’s music.
Nornír
Urd
release date: March 3rd, 2017
label: Northern Silence Productions
Germany’s Nornír have a new EP out, and it’s called “Urd.” It’s promising up-and-coming black metal that’s decked with a Scandinavian design. I get the feeling we’ll be hearing more from Nornír in the future. Here are the members: Angrist is on guitar. Søvn plays bass. Drums are handled by Farliath. Front-woman and guitarist, Lethian, gives us viciously powerful vocals.
I invite you to explore the workings of “Urd.” What will become of us after this harsh, brewing storm? Let’s begin:
The EP opens its door with “På den andre siden,” and a blast of intense instrumentation instantly crashes into us. Meet the fiery tremolo picking and the heated, tormented screams. It’s the perfect delivery of disaster, and the woeful melody makes it even more charming. What other presence could be lurking nearby? It’s “Winterthrone.” Stripped and magnetic, this track seems to sweep through and draw onlookers into the pits of an eternal suffering; the guitar-work feels blunt and commanding—traits that make black metal the addictive concoction that it is.
Even though “Above the mountains” begins with a sallow vibe, the rest of the song stirs up a hurricane of drums and thorny guitars. We’re given a farewell through “På denne siden,” where heightened melodies give voice to revelations of humanity’s mysteries.
“Urd” seems to have reached through ages to bring these zesty four numbers forth. Frosty riffs, rabid percussion and raw vocals are what have made the EP so attractive. Walk “Urd”‘s charred valleys and look to its ominous skies, and be renewed.

Ghost Ship Octavius concerts in Washington state and Oregon

The lucky fans of the state of Washington this summer of 2017 will find the critically acclaimed traditional/melodic progressive metal music act Ghost Ship Octavius performing concerts in a good effort to get to the audiences right here in this state. They also have a show for the proudly weird people of Portland, Oregon. Here are the dates for the Northwest so far.
Jun 07 The Pin, Spokane, WA
Jun 08 The Shakedown, Bellingham, WA
Jun 09 Tony V's Garage, Everett, WA
Jun 10 Louie G's Pizza, Fife, WA
Jun 11 Rock Hard PDX, Portland, OR
This is a great opportunity to catch some quality music and now Washingtonians will have several chances to hear it for themselves. The band says that they have been working on the second album, which is definitely good news for fans of progressive metal. Some people have already started speculating about the artwork for the new album because of a particular image that they have on Facebook, but it’s certainly too early at this point to get into that topic.
At any rate, the band’s debut album was self-titled and it came out in 2015. In case you have not heard this work, here is our friend and prog expert Matt Spall (U.K.) doing his review of the album.
[This review has previously been posted here. FYI.]
Artist: Ghost Ship Octavius
Album Title: Ghost Ship Octavius
Label: Independent Release
Date Of Release: 2015
What I’m about to say might shock you. There are some of you who might even vehemently disagree. But it is true, I can assure you.
I am human and I am fallible.
I know this for sure because I have dropped the proverbial ball from a great height. As you can see from the heading above, this self-titled album by Ghost Ship Octavius was released in 2015. Two years ago! Many of you will already be well aware of its existence and may even have it nestled within your collections. But I missed it. As I feverishly tried to cover as many releases as I could, this record passed me by. And by that, I mean that it really passed me by. I had to be gently nudged by a reader to even learn of its existence and to check it out.
And by heavens I’m glad of the prodding because this album is right up my street and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening to it over the past few weeks.
For those poor, unfortunate souls like me who are in need of a bit of background, Ghost Ship Octavius was formed in 2012 and this impressive record is their debut. Mind you, the quality of this album is hardly a surprise given the clientele involved. As a huge fan of Nevermore, my attention was initially drawn to the fact that the beast that is Van Williams sits behind the kit. Conducting a little further research has led me to understand that God Forbid guitarist Matthew Wicklund is also involved, as is Dagna Silesia who has worked with another member of the Nevermore alumni, Warrel Dane, on his solo material alongside Wicklund .Completing the line-up is vocalist Adon Fanion, a relative unknown but as it transpires, the owner of one hell of a set of pipes.
On paper then, the prospect of this band is very exciting. The reality is equally so. No damp squibs present, no deflated expectations. ‘Ghost Ship Octavius’ is a melodic progressive metal monster that’s not afraid to dip its toe into the realms of other metal subgenres.
Before I dissect a few of the tracks in more detail, there are a few more general aspects to this album that need to be mentioned. First, there are the performances of each member of the band which, as you might expect are highly professional throughout. But, intrinsically linked to this is the song writing. Well-executed instrumentalism only goes so far and will ultimately fail if it is not used to create strong compositions. Ghost Ship Octavius do not have this problem, as the music is incredibly well-conceived.
Being a melodic metal band, you’d expect there to be plenty of big choruses and hooks to pull you in. There are. Just about every one of the eleven tracks on this record provides some satisfying and addictive ear candy, be it overt or more subtly-placed.
Being a band with progressive leanings as well, you’d also expect the songs to have a fair amount of variety to them and for the music to offer something a little bit different. They do. There is more than enough virtuosity and technicality from each corner of Ghost Ship Octavius to supplement the melodies and the more immediate aspects of the music. Furthermore, there are several eyebrow-raising moments where the band goes all-out to intrigue and test the listener, something I really enjoy and fully welcome.
If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a more intangible aspect to ‘Ghost Ship Octavius’ that has an effect on me, and that’s the vibe of the record. Melodic and progressive it certainly is but it is also extremely heavy and quite dark. As befits a moniker like Ghost Ship Octavius, there’s a slightly menacing and brooding underbelly to the album that I find compelling and refreshing for a melodic metal band. The lyrics, the atmospheres, the vocal delivery and a million other minute ingredients lend the music on this debut a morose and haunting aspect. I love it.
Throw in a robust production that also allows sufficient clarity and space for everything to be heard, even Silesia’s impressive bass work, and it becomes evident pretty quickly that we’re on to a real winner here. Everything about Ghost Ship Octavius screams quality, focus and purpose. It only serves to heighten my embarrassment for missing out on this album when it was released.
The album opens with ‘Saturn and Skies’. It isn’t a long track but it immediately throws down the Ghost Ship Octavius gauntlet. It has a vague Nevermore feel to it in the riff department, but this is a theatrical, dynamic and ambitious composition that has its own strong identity, changing tack frequently within its relatively short existence. Fanion’s vocals immediately come to the fore, displaying a huge range but also impressing thanks to his ability to convey emotion with genuine power and conviction.
‘Alive’ has a sinister edge to it, driven by the monstrously powerful rhythm section of Williams and Silesia. Wicklund indulges in several wailing solos but they are as melodic and emotive as they are dextrous and technical, meaning that they genuinely add to the song. A mix of all-out blastbeat-led power and quiet, contemplative sections, complete with string and piano embellishments adds to the sense of drama and theatrical grandiosity that permeates the entirety of this record.
The stomping opening of ‘Silence’ is delivered with pin-sharp accuracy, ultimately giving way to one of the best choruses on the album. After about the third spin, the melodies get right under my skin and they don’t let go. Its strength lies, I think, in the fact that it is so powerful yet is also quite subtle, with Fanion showing restraint in his delivery, allowing his voice to be at one with the music rather than overpower it.
If the preceding few paragraphs have whetted your appetite, allow me to then introduce you to ‘In Dreams’. Buried within the middle of the album, it was the first Ghost Ship Octavius track I heard and was the one that made me realise the enormity of my mistake. Having listened to it several more times, I have to declare it to be one of the very best melodic metal tracks that I have ever heard. Everything about it is just about perfect. The riffs, in keeping with the entirety of the album, are fantastically muscular, the solos are exuberant, the bass is glorious, the drumming is thunderous and the vocals are superb. Then there’s the chorus, which is completely killer; hook-laden and hugely powerful, it slays.
It’s on this track that Fanion also produces arguably his best performance, full of anger and frustration during the chorus but something more measured, thoughtful and sorrowful in the quieter passages. I can neither confirm nor deny that I might have got a bit carried away when listening to this song on my headphones whilst walking the dog in my neighbourhood. But hell, music is meant to move you right?
Elsewhere, the introduction to ‘Pendulum’ is a thing of real beauty if you’re a sucker for the sound of a wailing guitar solo. It also ups the ante in terms of the band’s use of symphonic embellishments and is a wonderfully grandiose piece of music as a result, particularly in the more melodic mid-section onwards where there’s the sense of a group of musicians cutting loose a little bit. ‘Bloodcaster’ on the other hand, is one of the songs where the aforementioned eyebrows are raised thanks to its overtly quirky and borderline avant-garde nature juxtaposed by some of the most extreme music to be heard anywhere on the record.
‘Epitaph’ is a shorter blast of exuberant heavy metal underpinned by an insidious melody whilst ‘Burn Away’ has more of a power metal feel to it. Immediately melodic and up-tempo from the get-go, it then settles into more of a ballad-like composition. Fanion offers his most sensitive performance within yet another strong chorus, accented by a delicious piano that weaves itself nicely into the song.
I could go on because truth be told, ‘Ghost Ship Octavius’ doesn’t contain any filler material at all. This is a brilliant example of how wonderful melodic metal with a progressive edge can sound when done properly with care and skill, not to mention a clear vision and clarity of purpose from every member of the band. Become familiar with the name of Ghost Ship Octavius because if this is how good they sound on their debut album, just imagine what they might produce in the future. The mind boggles but I can’t wait.

Biography: Dark Phantom’s idea began in Kirkuk, Iraq late in 2007. The impression was to reach their dreams in western music and to express the inferior circumstances in the city, and explain it to the universe. But things wasn't able to progress, due to the bad situation in Iraq, and that lead to postponement of forward progress and a period of hibernation, for their safety. This was for survival, without any developments in the level of art. In 2008, the band was able to start up again and started rehearsal, despite all the dangers. Death was a consequence, of being caught playing this music in an Al Queda controlled situation. It was a volatile situation. Dark Phantom could then, hardly compose their first song, before there was a decline in the band's musical direction. They turned to cover songs, and, at the same time, worked on original music. There was a lot criticism in the Iraqi arena, to the band's music after the war, but the band was still looking to faith and hope, to guide them in what they believe – that music, itself, means life.
In 2009, the band managed to have a birth of their own music, by starting to write the first songs after many months in rehearsal. The final result was good, but no one regarded it. The band started to find ways to rerecord it, but unfortunately needed lessons in audio technique. After some instruction and added new hardware and software, the band continued preparation for more songs, and they set to make their first album. At first, it took a while to figure out the name of album. They settled on "Beta". In 2011, the band played their first concert in the city of Kirkuk. It was unforeseen, that under the same circumstances (volatile aggression, anti-metal music “laws”, etc.) a crowd came to see them and news of event rocked the small city. After the success of that gig, the band returned again to their studio to finish the album that they promised to their new fans.
After a lot of demand from the fans on the band's Facebook page for a second concert, in 2011, Dark Phantom was ready, but there was another situation that made it impossible. Terror groups and their allies began threatening to close all the of band's pages on the internet. The band was also warned, again, to stop their activities, or else. Now, in 2012, Dark Phantom’s members return to work on the final touches of their album. Now, as they finish it, they still struggle for local and worldwide promotion, and are awaiting the day that their dreams become reality, through their faith and hope in humanity.
After the band reputation was spread in the area, exactly in 2013 they started getting invitation to make a live concerts in different cities and indeed they responded, making 3 successful concerts in 3 different cities which was a great recovery and improvement for the band health. In 2014 some major changes were made to the band Vocal & Drummer (as they both left for safety reasons and the bad current situation of Iraq) and started working in a different fields . So, Mir was introduced to the band as a Vocal and Mahmood as a Drummer , were eventually the band style and musical color was changed to adapt the Thrash Death Metal Genre. And in a short time they made their 1st original Track (Nation of Dogs) Which opened the rusty gates for the band to start their 1st Album which is still "under construction" these days. As they are struggling hardly and travel across cities to meet for their dream the "Rehearsal" and creating the Passion's Music.

NEWS: Threshold

The long-running progressive metal act Threshold (U.K.) recently made several important announcements that are of interest to the supporters of the band and to traditional/melodic prog fans in general.
The first major piece of information deals with a change in singer. The longtime singer Damian Wilson is no longer in the band, and that concludes his third stint in the band. Rather than bring in a totally new singer into the fold, the band has recruited returning vocalist Glynn Morgan, who sang on the band’s 1994 studio album Psychedelicatessen and 1995’s live album Livedelica. The new line-up is pictured above.
Glynn Morgan commented: "I was over the moon when I got the phone call. To work with Karl and Richard and be a part of the mighty THRESHOLD story once more is a great honour. I can't wait to start recording, the new material has me hooked already."
The band has also announced that the new album will be called Legends of the Shires. It will be the band’s eleventh studio album. They say that they are finishing up the new work, the band’s first double album, and that it will be available later on this year.
In addition, later this year they will be doing a tour in Europe for the new album and Glynn Morgan, of course, will do vocals, but he will also play guitar. Here is the information about the tour.

interview: Isenordal (part 2

Here is the conclusion to the interview with Seattle epic metal band Isenordal. Here is also the link to the first part, just in case you might have missed it.
They are a type of creative extreme metal, and one the most important things about it all is the ambitious nature of the music and the band's hard work into making an album of this caliber. The hope is that you, the listener, can have a bit of patience and give the album some proper attention and get to know it. The link to hear the album is at the end of the interview. Once you hear the whole album, it is rather clear that this recording took hard work and imagination to come to life.
metalbulletin.blogspot.com/2017/05/interview-isenordal-part-1.html
Making music is fun and a great creative outlet for musicians, of course, but it takes money to do this. How is the situation in the case of your band? Are you homeless as a result of making the album?!
SAM: Tracking was expensive, for sure, but not prohibitively so. We all live really modestly as people, but we set aside some money for this and splitting it between everyone in the band helps with cost a lot.
LIEU: Passion knows no bounds. If you want it enough, you will figure out how to make it happen, even if you have to make some personal sacrifices along the way.
Coming back to the album, are those real acoustic guitars that I hear on the album? Do you use a real piano on the album, too? Did one of you play a real piano on the album? Do you a real cello, too?
SAM: Proud to say that everything on the album is real, done from scratch. Kerry played the piano on Shores. You’re close, it’s a real viola throughout the whole album! Marisa did a killer job with that and her vocals. Jeff used to play cello in the band, and did so on the IMBOLC demo, but we haven’t recorded anything with cello since. Wait for the next album, though, you might be surprised by what you hear. We’ll do acoustic neofolk sets with Jeff on the cello occasionally.
LIEU: I joined the band during the recording process, so there were some piano parts already recorded, but I wrote and added some parts of my own, as well as re-recording a few parts that were already written. It was great to be able to play a real piano for the album; as great as digital piano sounds have gotten, you really cannot beat the sound and feel of a real piano.
MARISA: There is no cello on Shores of Mourning. All of the string performances are done entirely on viola, with occasional multi-tracking for layered orchestral passages.
Did this band always envision having those instruments in addition to the usual rock music setup of guitar, bass and drums? Or, is this something has been developing as you go along and feel the need for a more expansive sound? When will you find that epic metal accordionist that will rock your world and join your band?
SAM: I think Kerry always wanted strings in the band. I love having keyboards as well, it really thickens up the soundscape and opens up a bunch of avenues for songwriting. Take a black metal band like NORTT, they use piano super effectively in their music. Lieu actually plays accordion, too, we may be adding some of that down the line!
KERRY: I have absolutely always wanted strings and piano. With the previous lineup, some of the other folks didn’t want to waste time trying to find a keyboard player, but I had songs I had been writing that were specifically for piano (i.e., “Shores” and “Pyres”). The suggestion of just moving the parts to guitar was not satisfying for me. Viola and piano are some of the most beautiful sounding instruments there are, and nothing can replace it.
LIEU: As someone who loves metal, but is not yet good enough to play guitar or drums in a metal band, I was stoked to have the opportunity to play my favorite instrument in a band that plays some of my favorite metal genres. I was originally just going to fill in for a couple shows, but everything just fell into place so well and I was able to get time off work to tour, so now here I am. I’m looking forward to writing more technical piano parts for our new songs, and funny you should ask, I might do some accordion parts as well!
MARISA: I have loved metal as long as I have loved classical music and have wanted to do a project like this my whole life.
On the song “A Gallows Prayer” there is choir-like singing, with both male and female voices. Did you do this in the studio or did you get it from an application or software, like a library of sounds? Was that a new, challenging thing to do? Growling and screaming is something that you do well, but choir-like voices must be a new thing to try, no?
KERRY: That’s us! No software needed, haha. I did a small amount of clean vocals on Imbolc, but nothing really beyond that. It was a little bit challenging to get the tonality right for sure. Everyone tells you to try and move a lot of air when doing clean vocals, but honestly I have found that singing quieter sounds better in the studio.
MARISA: I love singing and was able to explore the possibility of mimicking the timbre of viola in my vocals. That was really fun in the studio!
By the way, why have there been so few of the band online? There were some pictures but they are faded or grey and I could not see much of anything! Why was this?
SAM: We’re not too concerned with hiding ourselves! Anyone who’s seen us live can attest to that we’re actually pretty out there, we try to get in the audience’s faces a little. We don’t wear corpse paint, or shrouds, or use stage names online or anything like that. With that being said, the music has a really atmospheric and emotional nature to it, and we tried to evoke that shadow and ephemeral energy in some of the photography. Our friend Monica took that photo of us that’s on the tape, that one of us around the campfire, and she did a great job of achieving exactly what we were going for.
KERRY: To be honest, it’s really just been a matter of getting us all in the same room at the same time. Our keyboard player currently lives in Pittsburgh, so we didn’t really have a way to get a full band photo before Shores came out! But with our U.S. tour we will definitely have a lot more full band pictures.
Ok, you did it. You finally finished your album and now it is done, and it is out of your hands. Now people will listen to it, and some will call you doom, others atmospheric black, some others epic, yet others will say gothic, still some will say folk, and some of us do not care. So, now, what are some more of your plans to promote the album? You did a 30-day tour of the U.S. You’ve done shows in Seattle and also one in Everett! Not bad, right?!
SAM: I like to think we’re a little bit of all of those things.
We worked with Earsplit PR to do some promo for the record, but thus far a good deal of it has been word-of-mouth as well. I’m really flattered that people seem into the material. I want to say thanks to everybody that helped spread the word thus far! Metal Injection and Cvlt Nation both wrote us up, as well as a bunch of others, too many to name, you know who you are and we’re in reverence to you!
KERRY: We are currently working on some new material, hopefully we can do a recording session after our US tour, but it depends highly on everyone’s schedules. I just want to release more songs and play more shows!
LIEU: I think we all just want to celebrate by writing more albums! Now that we have a really dedicated line-up, we are feeling really inspired by each other and developing a lot of ideas musically. I’m looking forward to expanding our sound even more and continuing to frustrate genre-assigners. ;)
Finally, do you have any other news that I have not asked about? People say, “Oh, man, I love your band! Your music is great!”, but tell us for real, what can people do to support your band in an actual way that benefits your band in a tangible manner? I recommend that people say to you, “Shut up and take my money!” What do you think?
SAM: I’m flattered that people listen to us at all, much less buy our merch and download our records as much as they do. We’re really floored by the support, and really grateful for it. If you want to get merch and throw some money our way, we’ve got posters, t shirts, patches, all on our bandcamp page! But I’m happy as long as anyone’s listening at all. Just enjoy the tracks and show your friends!
KERRY: I am extremely grateful for the response we have gotten from this album. I really just want people to enjoy it, no matter if you like metal or not. I strongly dislike elitism in music scenes. What is important to me is the emotion that music conveys, and I think that emotion transcends genres or scenes.

NEWS: Taake cancels Seattle and Portland shows

Norwegian black metal act Taake has announced on the eve of its U.S. tour that they have to cancel the first two shows. Below is the official announcement.
MPORTANT U.S.A. ANNOUNCEMENT!
It is with heavy heart that we have to inform you that some of Taake's band members have not yet received their working visas.
We have been fortunate with this system before, having travelled to the States 3 times in the past 3 years. For this tour we started the visa process as early as we could, with a longer time buffer than before. Still, with the situation of all band members remaining unchanged from prior successful visa applications, time is now running out and we might have to cancel the first shows. Hopefully as few as possible. We are continuously doing all that we can to solve this quickly, but speeding up the process is totally out of our hands. We will keep you updated, please check this page daily. We would appreciate your understanding and patience..
Canceled shows;
20 May 2017: El Corazon, Seattle (USA)
21 May 2017: Star Theatre, Portland (USA)

Nox Coven

Nox Coven calls for witching black metal from Chile invoking the primal times of dark divination through the praxis of the notes of the crafts of ancient illumination and incantations of the beyond. What is there before and after Nox Coven and what is there once again? What is the invocation at hand and whence does it project, emptiness or here? All is not to be revealed for the mass clarification, for the Nox Coven is there of the black metal initiates and devoted to this once again alive metal of the witching anti-eternity. In 2017 they have a new EP called De las sombras misterios ocultos, which translated could mean from the shadows occult mysteries or a similar spirit of the words, depending on the Spanish original meanings. On the Bandcamp there is an older live recording from 2016 and it is called Live at Bubar's and it is a raw manifestation of the necro vituperation channeled in the concert calling of the Nox Coven compact with black metal devotion mass. Another medium to engage more of the Nox Coven contract is YouTube where they have material, too, including live rehearsal performing acts. If you live die alive for black metal, Nox Coven is next on your enumeration of obtainment determined now. Vacillate not!

Namea (U.S.)

Namea is a melodic extreme metal band from the Tacoma/Seattle area, in the state of Washington, according to the information that they have online. Below you will find the relevant information about their first EP from this year. The band has yet to provide much information about itself and they don’t have many pictures, except for one on Metal Archives and that one doesn’t seem accurate if compared to the lineup. They are not very active online yet.
The sound of the band is American melodic extreme metal combined with some metalcore influences, like some of the screams and some breakdowns, but they definitely are not a hardcore band. The melodic riffing and soloing demonstrate clearly that they have chosen the more serious side of music. The guitars in particular show a conscious effort to deliver melodies that the listener can remember.
Some people will not like that the band has chosen to avoid social media until now, but maybe that will change once fans begin to demand more contact with them.
