interview: Cellador

Cellador is back on the streets again big time! As you will read in this interview with the band’s mastermind Chris Petersen, Cellador was never over, even though it might have seemed that way to people on the outside, like this publication. Now they have a new album of fast, melodic traditional metal music and it is fully available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play and most all the streaming music sites, like Bandcamp. Expect gigantic choruses, sharp-and-fast riffs flying everywhere and songs that will be welcomed by audiences into melodies and singing. The new album is called Off the Grid.
Off the Grid is a very catchy, fast and melodic album!
I'm glad you thought the album was catchy, as we try to write sing-a-long memorable songs with high energy. As opposed to our last album Enter Deception, on Off the Grid we tried to keep songs as focused as possible, and shorter in length, and really in every way it turned out amazing.
What can you tell us about where you recorded Off the Grid? How long were you recording? Who plays what instruments on the album?
All band operations are based out of Denver, CO where the majority of us live. Our keyboardist Diego Valadez is based out of Los Angeles, CA, but commutes monthly for all band matters and of course all the shows we do.
We recorded about 2/3's of the album at my own personal home studio (what we call the "Celladark Studio") and the remainder was recorded at our former band rehearsal room in Arvada, CO. The recording process was quite spread out, we started the tracking process in December 2014 and were working on it all the way up to June 2015. We'd spend about 2 days a week recording for a couple hours each session. Sometimes if a set of shows were coming up we would break from the recording process to instead put focus on rehearsing. It was a very unstressful process, we were really able to really give time and effort to all elements of this album, redo or re-record parts we wanted to improve on etc. Once the tracking was finished we sent all the recordings off to Massachusetts where our mixer Peter Rutcho went at them and by July 2015 delivered a very outstanding mix and master to us.
I recorded all the vocals and guitar tracks on the new album, and also wrote all the songs and lyrics. I had say in the drums but everything was approved by Nick Mccalister our drummer obviously before going on the album. Diego Valadez arranged and recorded all keyboards and keyboard solos from his studio in Los Angeles, I didn't have much say in those, he basically sent over his tracks and we used them. James Pickett tracked all the bass guitar over at my studio while I helmed the controls. Two guests also contributed; Todd Seitz played a guitar solo on the song "Shimmering Status" and Peter Rutcho played a keyboard solo on "Wake Up the Tyrant."
Cellador has not published new music since 2011, correct? Was Cellador broken up? Why the long wait?
Technically the EP "Honor Forth" was released in June 2013, but you are correct that the songs from that EP were written and showcased as early as 2011 before I had a full lineup.
The band never officially broke up, but we did have a hiatus period with little updates. The lineup for our first album persisted in various ways until mid-2009 when our singer and drummer at the time finally parted ways. At this time I relocated to Denver, CO and while I still did have a bassist and guitarist, they were not interested in participating in the band long-distance (we were all originally from Omaha, NE), so I was essentially on my own to reform the band. So I began seeking new band members in my new home city while writing and recording the songs for our EP "Honor Forth." It took a little bit as I was very particular in who I was looking for in band members, also not to mention this style of music doesn't exactly have competent freely available musicians all over the place. Regardless by 2012 I had a newly completed lineup and we began playing shows again and essentially functioning as a complete band. We officially released "Honor Forth" via hard CD, independently distributed, and began the process of seeking a new label home. Long story short, we spent 2014-2016 soliciting and negotiating with labels remotely and had a few hiccups that cost us 2 years of time. By Fall 2016, already having the new album completed and waiting to be released, I got in contact with Scarlet Records and solidified a deal myself for the band and our new album.
So in short: a major lineup overhaul was the first delay, and then failed label negotiations were the second. Had we done things differently, this album could easily have been released 2 years ago. But it is what it is, it’s finally out and honestly things turned out better this way in the end.
I remember when your debut came out in 2006: Enter Deception. Cellador was an exciting new band playing fast power metal. Interestingly enough, your style still sounds the same! Years have passed but Cellador sounds like Cellador. For you, what has changed since 2006 and what remains the same? Are you more ready now to deal with problems that a band faces in the world of music today?
Well, this is the main reason I kept going under this band name, I knew it would sound the same! I wrote all the music on Enter Deception and again wrote all the music on Off the Grid. I still have the same vision for this band, same goals I wanted to accomplish and same desire of style. I'm just more focused and polished these days, more mature but eager as ever. I admit I think part of it was also having a bit of a personal vendetta. The way the old lineup fell apart, I felt a little rejected. The band was seeing major success, we had great things lined up operating the way we were operating, and then it was all taken away because band members couldn't get along. I wanted to show everyone what it means to really control your own destiny, especially if you have a goal you want to accomplish. I wanted to show the power of persistence.
What has changed? Oh man, lots. There’s so many more bands nowadays, and so many more standards you have to meet. YouTube is essential, all bands must have not just music videos, but lots of regularly posted video content. We weren't much of a video-genic band back in the day aside from our music video, but nowadays we need to step it up with video updates, playthroughs, interviews etc. There's also much more bands touring, almost every band local or national tours these days. There's no mystique or glamour to it whatsoever. This means bands are getting paid less, and given that there's more supply of bands it’s a listeners market. Bands are finding themselves having to pay industry-insiders just to get a connection with someone who can give you opportunity. "Pay to Play" is more prevalent than ever, and common now even in smaller cities across the country.
I almost wanna say playing metal is a suckers game, I would never pursue it as a sole means of income. But it’s a loyal and deep subculture, and I don't think it’s ever going to go anywhere. It’s a great creative outlet and passion to be a part of. You just have to see it for what it is and have fun or you'll find yourself quickly exhausted.
Cellador used to be on Metal Blade Records, but now you are on Scarlet Records. Is Metal Blade not interested in power metal? How did you relationship with Scarlet Records begin?
They like power metal, in fact we were one of their spotlight bands for a minute there. I got in touch with them for the first time in 2-3 years back after I reformed the lineup. They thought we had broken up, checked some legalities regarding our status with them, and ultimately decided to let us go. It happens.
As mentioned above, we began a long drawn out label search beginning in late 2013. We had several interested labels, and tried contracting with a management company to see if we could negotiate a better deal, or something with a bigger label. That didn't end up working out after two years of trying. Several labels offered deals but then were not able to commit for their own various reasons (financial difficulties, changes in contact persons, etc.). It just took way longer than expected, it was a major cause for our delay. In summer 2016, after these failed negotiations were officially in the past, we found ourselves back at square one with a fully completed album and no label. So I got in touch with Scarlet Records myself, a label I honestly should have contacted much earlier. They were interested and so here we are now.
Your singer Chris Petersen has a good power metal singing voice, but he was not the original vocalist, right? How did he become the singer? Did he just try it out? Why didn’t he do it before? I like his voice. I’m wondering how one discovers that one can sing power metal.
I am the singer so thanks for the kind words! Again hindsight is 20/20, taking up vocals was something I should have done much earlier in the band history. It would have saved so many headaches and made things so much easier.
I only took up the vocalist position because we couldn't find a good singer. I'll admit I always thought singing would be fun, I was just too shy and insecure to sincerely take it up until necessity really called for it. After years of searching for Cellador's next vocalist with no success, my bassist James convinced me to take the plunge and fill the position myself. At that point I already was demoing vocals on my song ideas, and making a little headway on vocal skills. I just needed to develop the stamina and better ear for pitch that came with actual practice in front of a mic and live backing band, not to mention all while playing guitar at the same time. I am not a natural to singing by any means, it took a few years to get to where I'm at on the album. It was incredibly frustrating at first, and I'm sure I sounded horrible in the beginning, but the band was very patient in helping me practice and learn to sing the songs.
I gave the vocal instrument the same effort I gave guitar and songwriting when I first started those areas, and still feel like an intermediate ever learning student of singing to this day. Recording the vocals on Off the Grid absolutely pushed me to a new level, as I had to really REALLY learn to sing to a close degree of exact pitch. Recording offers no small room for the kind of mistakes you can get away with in a live setting, unless you want to autotune and sound really fake which is something I didn't want to do.
Your song “Swallow Your Pride” brings the blasting into the power metal. Cellador is fast metal, but with the blasting, the level goes even higher. Do you believe in incorporating a bit of extreme metal speed into your music?
We are all influenced by metal styles beyond traditional power and heavy metal. I like blasts here and there for intensity sometimes, and like a lot of classic death metal bands. Enter Deception actually had more blast beats, but on this album "Swallow Your Pride" is the one song with them. It’s actually the oldest song on the new album, written a little after the songs on Enter Deception were recorded, so it still retains some of that "extreme" element and other elements I was especially more focused on during that era.
We don't desire to simply be labeled as a "power metal" in fact we usually just call ourselves melodic metal. We have rock, extreme, and other non-traditional power metal elements in our music, and in the future we'll probably be incorporating even more varied styles down the road. We've been working on new material already and our new guitarist Eric Meyers is bringing even more different styles to the table (all Cellador pre-approved of course).
The song “Good Enough” (Cindy Lauper cover) is a good contrast because it’s really melodic, almost like a power metal pop song. It’s so good it seems like a really short song. This might be my favorite song. Or, at least, it’s my favorite today. Who knows, tomorrow it might be “Sole Survivors” or “Wake up the Tyrant.” Would you be willing to play “Good Enough” live?! Is that a hard song to pull off live, vocally speaking?
"Good Enough" was a last-minute idea to put on the album, we actually set aside an original song to make room for this one. Despite it being a cover I'm glad you like it as your fav because I like how the song turned out. The drums are great and James did an amazing job on the slap bass if you can hear it going on in there. I am a big 80's pop music fan and thought this song could use a good "metalized" version because it was very catchy and fun to sing, not to mention it reeks of nostalgia because it’s from the movie "The Goonies" which is a childhood favorite of mine and I'm sure a lot of other 80's/90's kids. It didn't take to long to record, I put together the demo version on guitar in a single day. We don't play this one live, or not yet at least, but we'll see how the feedback goes, maybe we'll do something with it like a video.
Looking back at how Cellador’s trajectory has turned out after all these years, what regrets do you have? The new album is a convincing return, but do you agree what you disappeared for a while? Or, at least, maybe I just did not know. Is your plan to make another album in less time than you have so far? Cellador takes as long as Def Leppard and Boston take to make an album!
Again, for me the band never had a break. Since 2005 I have been nonstop either writing, recording, touring, auditioning band members, or managing band affairs. But you are right there were major delays and periods with little updates, not to mention no new music. In addition I have a life outside music which at times, if it called, I'd put the band more as a side priority for a period of time until things pick up (like now). But hopefully delays are a thing of the past. We have a great lineup now and great set-up to churn out some good music and steady performances. Myself having taken over vocals makes things much easier; I can write, record, sing, and produce a good majority of the band's music these days. Probably my biggest regret is not having learned to sing earlier, or not having the confidence to take things into my own hands, etc. I was too reliant on others, but nowadays that is no longer the case. It is our plan to put out another release, in fact we have several songs written and tracked already. Eric, my new 2nd guitarist, has been a great teammate in the writing process, and has really stepped up to be my "checks and balances" guy to make sure we keep meeting deadlines, goals, etc.
Do you have any plans to take your power metal on the road in the U.S.? Is Scarlet going to help take your music to Europe?! Do you want to tour? What has been your experience in touring the U.S.? Are there American supporters of power metal?
We're looking at ideas now. We don't want to be sitting around without representing our masterpiece album, that’s for sure. We're shopping European and other international agents as we speak. Scarlet Records being an Italian label has really given us a big push in Europe, so we're trying to go there. But likely we'll make something at least in North America happen.
As of right now, we're confirmed to support Yngwie Malmsteen at the Summit Music Hall in Denver, CO on May 23rd. It should be one of our first bigger shows in support of this new album.
Yup, as stated above they are pushing us in Europe. We've already seen a lot of positive acclaim, near perfect to perfect reviews of the album from webzines over there. Again, it’s a matter of finding the right agent who can get us over there.
The last full-fledged tour we did was in 2014 with thrash bands Hatchet and Exmortus, hitting most of the Western USA over the course of a month. Touring North America is mostly all we're used to so I can't really comment on how it compares to Europe. There's always good shows and bad shows. Some cities proved well for us on more than one occasion (Detroit, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, etc.), and there's always surprise cities too, such as Midland, TX which was a great show.
There's definitely American supporters of power metal, or at least American supporters of us! We're very excited to hit the East Coast USA where we haven't been in years, and where a majority of our fans live.
Do you have any plans or news that you would like to share at this point?
Our first video single for "Shadowfold" is online now. Our track-by-track album breakdown video, where I give a few thoughts on each song off the album, is also online now. We're in the process of creating the 2nd single and first "real music video" for the album now. Also we have some fun playthough videos coming, such as keyboard vids, drum vids, singing vids, etc. We're very proud of this album and will do everything we can to make sure it’s really supported with good video content and promotion.
Thank you for your time and music! The new album is not “good enough.” It’s wonderful!
Much obliged :D. Feels great to be back in full force!

review: Craven Idol

Craven Idol
The Shackles Of Mammon
Dark Descent Records
Release: 14 April 2017
Craven Idol is a quality band from the U.K. If you ask a reviewer what genre this is, you will hear different answers all around. They are black metal, according to some. They are throwback thrash, in the opinion of others. Some others consider the band black thrash. The reason is because Craven Idol writes music does not fit a particular genre strictly, not in the sense that people understand genres today. Craven Idol obviously respects the guitar traditions of classic Judas Priest and Mercyful Fate and the like, the sounds that are the very definition of heavy metal guitar itself, and they also carry their love of early Venom, Sodom and Bathory very close to their hearts. Listeners who recognize respect for tradition and the foundations of our music will immediately understand what's going on here with Craven Idol, despite the genre classification issues that some reviewers have encountered.
The music is filled with heart-pounding riffs and a plethora of solos, melodies, mini-solos and other guitar mastery. This is a band that wants guitarists that know how to guitar and that want to guitar in a real way. They have spent time learning the instrument and learning to compose songs, and it shows very clearly with an attentive listen. An outstanding important fact about the album is the good production for an extreme album. For instance, you can hear the bass guitar very well, and considering that metal bands are really incompetent at showing the bass playing in the music, that should tell you something about the band's dedication to their craft. They actually have thought about how to make the bass guitar something that you can hear. If that is not love for heavy metal and love for you, the listener, then I don't know what love is. The drums sound like real drums, but I don't know (maybe we can get an interview and investigate this issue). Finally, the vocals. Let's tell the truth. The vast majority of extreme metal vocals are not that good. Most vocalists are perfectly content with average growling that anyone with a belly can do. The best that you can say about most growlers is that they sound ok, if that. However, when it comes to classic extreme vocals done right, listeners have never had difficulty figuring out which band it is because the vocalists had their own personality: Motorhead, and the classic works of bands that through several albums created a legacy: Venom, Bathory, Sodom, Celtic Frost, Possessed, Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Dissection, Napalm Death, Darkthrone, so on and so forth. Craven Idol vocals are more than just growling. Sure, there's growling, but there are also howls, screams, maniacal vociferations and other individual traits that let you know that this is Craven Idol and that they seek to be in the company of the masters that preceded them.
The band struck me as really good at first, but I did not believe it. I thought that maybe they had some flashes of greatness, but I doubted that they could carry the quality for the complete album. You know it: some bands put their good songs in front and they hope that people will not figure out what's going on and will not really listen critically to the last half of the album. After spending time with the album, I can report with confidence that, in my opinion, the band makes a serious effort to keep up the quality for the entire work. I do not doubt anymore.
review by MMB
OFFICIAL: London’s premium metal force Craven Idol unleash their second album of ruthless first wave blackened thrash in the vein of early Bathory, Gospel Of The Horns, Manilla Road, and Inquisiton. After four years of toil, the U.K. four-piece present: The Shackles Of Mammon, an uncompromising and unique blend of tag-less extreme metal from the early days of horrible hellnoise. Inspirations are many; Be it heavy metal Gods such as Mercyful Fate, Candlemass, Sortilege or Manilla Road; Early pioneers like Poison (Ger), Samael, Razor, Bathory, Venom; Pretenders to the throne like Gospel Of The Horns, D666, Inquisiton… But don’t be fooled – this is no tribute act. Recorded at Birmingham’s Priority Studios and engineered by Esoteric’s Greg Chandler (and mastered by Dan Lowndes at Resonance Sound), The Shackles Of Mammon boasts an old school production as well as Craven Idol’s most fierce and varied songs to date.
The album boasts artwork by the extraordinarily twisted Daniel Corcuera. The artist’s powerful take on Sascha Schneider’s 1896 wood carving ‘Mammon und sein Sklave’ is a striking work of art. Lyrically the album deals with the vices of man, the plagues they unleashed upon themselves, and the rationalisation of its own actions – be it in tragedy or ruin – through the creation of deities and cults. Mammon the - Demon of Avarice - reigns above all, whilst the black arts and countless religions seek to justify human failure.
CRAVEN IDOL live dates:
April 8th - London @ Black Heart
April 15th - Glasgow @ North Of The Wall Fest
May 15th - London @ Underworld w/ Nifelheim

NEWS: Diabolic to play Domination Fest 4 in Chicago in July

Traditional death metal band Diabolic (Florida, U.S.) has announced that they will play Domination Fest 4 in July in Chicago. Check out the flyer. In addition, recently they shared this old interview with drummer Aantar Lee Coates. Check it out below, too, where you will also find an older piece that this publication posted, in case you missed it.
interview with Aantar of Diabolic/Unholy Ghost/Blastmasters/Exmortis
Diabolic is a veteran death metal band from the U.S. Unfortunately, they are overlooked, but make no mistake, Diabolic represents the values of traditional extreme metal completely. The band makes clear where they come from: BATHORY, KREATOR, VOI VOD, DARK ANGEL, POSSESSED, METALLICA, MORBID ANGEL, CANNIBAL CORPSE, SLAYER. The origins of the band date back to 1996, but as it often happens in bands, they have had their share of troubles within the band, and they have gone through periods of inactivity. Of course, these things have not helped the cause of Diabolic in a world in which if your band disappears for a bit, people forget about your band, and move on to the next band, trend or whatnot.
Below you will find two links at which you can hear a bit of the music. If you are serious about death metal, and not just a casual listener, and you want to hear bands that have experience, and you have not given much attention to Diabolic, consider what a review at Metal Archives says about the band: "Most of the tracks on Excisions of Exorcisms are high octane blasts of satanic fury. "Fragmented Kreation" and "Venomous Habitations" are highlights in this regard. The higher tempo tracks feature blasting drums courtesy of founding member Aantar Coates that threaten to come off the rails and fly apart, yet never quite lose control. Morbid Angel-style guitar riffs and traded solo freak-outs are also abundant thanks to Kelly McLauchlin (also of Pessimist) and newcomer Jeff Parrish. Returning vocalist / bassist Paul Ouellette rounds out the lineup with a solid guttural vocal performance that recalls David Vincent's heyday. This is a very strong Diabolic lineup indeed. The guys also show that they know how to reduce the tempo and crush the listener near the end of Excisions of Exorcisms. "False Belief" and "Entombed" both slow the pace, and as a result they really stand out from the rest of the album. Besides the more moderate tempo, these tracks also feature some of the best riffs on this release. "False Belief" instills a sinister feeling of dread in the listener with its slow, suffocating riffs, while "Entombed" uses descending chords that will make you feel like you are actually about to "descend into your tomb." The whole album gives off a wicked vibe, but these tracks are two of the darkest."
Recently, the band seems to be playing some shows, but there is not much in the way of updates posted. Some things remain unclear still. Is there a new album in the works? If so, for when, for 2017? Are there plans to embark on tours or is Diabolic a project at this point? At any rate, despite these questions, there is no doubt that Diabolic has done strong work in the past and any future recording and activities should be of interest to the devoted supporters of death metal.
Band information as found in Wikipedia:
Diabolic is an American death metal band from Tampa, Florida, founded in 1998 by drummer Aantar Lee Coates and guitarist Brian Malone. The very earliest beginnings of Diabolic started in 1996, when drummer Aantar Coates (Exmortis, Horror of Horrors, Unholy Ghost, Blastmasters) teamed up with guitarist Kelly McLauchlin (Pessimist, Unholy Ghost, Possessed) to record the very first 4-song Diabolic Demo. Although this demo was never officially released, and sent only to select contacts in the underground, it marked the beginning of success to follow for the band.
By January 1997, Diabolic drummer/founder Aantar Coates had relocated to Tampa, Florida and after forming the first complete lineup, recorded and released the successful demo "City of the Dead". This demo immediately got the band noticed in the worldwide underground press and was later released as MCD on Fadeless Records. By 1998, Diabolic made their debut live appearance opening for Vader in Tampa, Florida followed by Milwaukee Metalfest XII. The lineup was soon solidified to include Aantar Coates on drums, Paul Ouellette on lead guitar and vocals, Brian Malone on lead guitars, and Ed Webb on bass.
In 1999, Diabolic recorded their debut full-length album Supreme Evil. This CD, which was mastered at Morrisound Recording Studios in Tampa and featured the artwork of Joe Petagno (Motörhead, Marduk, Krisiun), was released on Conquest/Hammerheart Records and received a multitude of excellent reviews and established an enormous international underground following for the band. More live shows soon followed, and the band continued gaining notoriety and writing for their next release.
The following year in 2000, Diabolic recorded their second full-length album Subterraneal Magnitude, again released on Conquest/Hammerheart Records. Produced by Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer), this over-the-top destructive force expanded the unique Diabolic sound to new extremes. By this time, vocalist Paul Ouellette had switched to bass, and the band had recruited Brian Hipp (Brutality, Cradle of Filth, Acheron) on lead guitars. Again featuring the art of Joe Petagno, it was clear that Diabolic was destined for success.
Diabolic was soon enlisted for the "Death Metal Massacre Tour 2000", opening for Cannibal Corpse, God Dethroned and Hate Eternal, playing to sold-out venues for four weeks, all across the USA. In 2001, Diabolic was honored to be chosen for the prestigious Metal Maniacs "Xmass Ball Tour 2001", opening for Enslaved and Macabre (which included a one-off with Lacuna Coil!), followed by a 3-week North American Tour of the U.S. and Canada, supporting Marduk and Amon Amarth. Later that same year, Diabolic was hand-picked to open several dates across the southern U.S. with death metal pioneers Morbid Angel.
In 2002, Diabolic signed to Century Media/Olympic Records and surpassed all earlier releases with their third CD, Vengeance Ascending. Once again produced by Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez, this devastating attack redefined extreme metal in a relentless onslaught of anger, vengeance, and victory. Again this CD featured the art of Joe Petagno, and new lead guitarist recruit Jerry Mortellaro. The band then departed on a month-long, sold-out U.S. Tour supporting Dimmu Borgir, Cryptopsy, and Krisiun, further solidifying the band as one of the underground's most ferocious upcoming death metal acts. In November 2002 Diabolic made their European debut, for a month-long tour of 10 countries in support of Behemoth, Deströyer 666, and Deicide.
By 2003, and after the European Tour, the band had gone through several major lineup changes. Gone was the original lineup, who had all been replaced. Led by sole remaining original member Brian Malone, the band recorded their fourth full-length CD, Infinity Through Purification. Produced by Neil Kernon (Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Judas Priest) and released on Century Media Records, this album had great potential, but without the trademark Diabolic of the past it garnered lackluster reviews. The band had even secured an opening slot on Deicide's upcoming U.S. Tour, but soon after the album's release, it was announced that the band was being dissolved permanently. It seemed that this would be the end of Diabolic.
Meanwhile, Diabolic original members Aantar Cotes (drums), Paul Ouellette (vocals, bass) along with guitarists Kelly McLauchlin (Pessimist, Unholy Ghost, Possessed) and Jerry Mortellaro (also formerly of Diabolic) had joined together in 2003 to form a new band, Unholy Ghost. The band signed to Century Media/Olympic Recs, and released the debut CD Torrential Reign, produced by Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer) as well as recorded a video for "Under Existence", released on Century Media Europe DVD. The band went on to play several hi-profile fests such as "Sun 'n' Steel" Florida Metalfest, Snakenet.com "Metal Nation" Fest, Las Vegas Metalfest, and "Gathering of the Bestial Legions" Metalfest in Los Angeles. Despite its apparent success, Unholy Ghost soon disbanded in 2005 and lead guitarist Kelly McLauchlin went back to work with Pessimist, and drummer Aantar Coates went on to form yet another new band, Blastmasters.
By 2006, and amidst legal battles over the rights to use the name, Diabolic had re-formed. Original drummer Aantar Coates along with Unholy Ghost/Pessimist guitarist Kelly McLauchlin and parts of the Blastmasters lineup (RJ/guitars and Jesse Jolly/bass, Vox) recorded their comeback EP, Possessed By Death in 2007. Then after re-enlisting original bassist/vocalist Paul Ouellette in 2008, the band recorded yet another new EP, Chaos in Hell. Both self-produced EPs were recorded at DOW studios in Tampa, Florida again with long-time producer Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez. The band then signed to Deathgasm Records in 2008, and released both EPs on one CD, Chaos in Hell/Possessed by Death. Diabolic continued by playing select shows in Tampa with Monstrosity and Six Feet Under, and festivals including "Mayhem in May" in Louisville, Kentucky and "Gathering of the Bestial Legions III" Metalfest in Hollywood, California.
The band returned once again to DOW Studios and longtime producer Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer, Unholy Ghost) and in 2010, Diabolic has unleashed their newest slaying, Excisions of Exorcisms on Deathgasm Records with a return to a core lineup that featured original drummer Aantar Coates (Unholy Ghost, Exmortis, Horror of Horrors, Blastmasters), original bassist/vocalist Paul Ouellette (Unholy Ghost), and lead guitarists Kelly McLauchlin (Unholy Ghost, Pessimist, Possessed) and Jeff Parrish (Blastmasters).
In April 2010, Diabolic was hand-selected to open the first several dates of the Cannibal Corpse "Evisceration Plague" Tour (in place of 1349), including shows in Atlanta GA, Raleigh NC, Washington DC and Long Island, NY. The band then made festival appearances at Las Vegas Deathfest II and Hostile City Death Fest II in Philadelphia, PA.
Jeff Parrish died on February 14, 2013 from a heart attack in his sleep. He was 40 years old.
Diabolic is currently writing new music for the next CD.

Nubian Rose

Publications have raved about the fun, memorable songs and the great singing of Nubian Rose, a melodic band from Sweden that has two albums so far: Mountain (2012) and Mental Revolution (2014). Find out a bit more about them below and watch some of their official videos. If you like traditional singing and rocking, then you'll see why people are loving this band.
This is what Hard Rock Haven has said about about Nubian Rose: "Swedish Melodic Hard Rockers Nubian Rose returned at the close of 2014 with their second album, titled Mental Revolution. It’s the follow-up to their 2012 debut Mountain, and once again features the vocal talents of powerhouse singer Sofia Lilja alongside guitar wizard Christer Akerlund.
It’s not exactly unusual to find a Melodic Hard Rock that features a female vocalist. What is unusual is to find one with a vocalist this powerful. Lilja brings real power and emotion to these songs, and follows the the footsteps of singers like Sandy Saraya and Ann Wilson. There’s nothing dainty about her vocal performance here. Of course it helps that she’s belting out songs that are written to have as much hard rocking punch as they have catchy melodies. Akerlund’s guitar hooks are razor sharp, and perfectly play off Lilja’s vocals. It’s very easy to imagine the songs on Mental Revolution being just as effective in the hands of bands like Hardcore Superstar or H.E.A.T, though that may be the mark producer Tobias Lindell, who mixed the album, left on it.
It’s not quite a Sleaze Rock record like what Hardcore Superstar or Crashdiet would do, but Nubian Rose is definitely worthy of inclusion alongside their fellow Swedish melodic hard rockers. They bring the hooks, the heavy rhythms and a very memorable vocal performance. For proof, sample the completely catchy, completely rocking “Break Out” or “Time Again.” Even a slower song like “You Will Never Walk Alone” carries a measure of power, like a good ballad should.
Mental Revolution is another rock-solid offering from a band that could become one of the best in the melodic rock scene. Fans of Swedish melodic rock definitely need to check out Nubian Rose, as should fans of powerful female-fronted rock bands like Saraya, Robin Beck, Annica and of course Heart."
OFFICIAL: Nubian Rose evolves around the magnetic charisma and majestic voice of Sofia Lilja, combined with the unique talent of guitarist Christer Åkerlund. In combination with powerful guitar riffs and great melodies, they put a new spirit in the classic melodic hard rock.
Nubian Rose was founded in 2011. Guitarist Christer Åkerlund knew he found a unique talent in Sofia Lilja when he first heard her sing. Her powerful voice and charismatic stage presence were something very special and meant for greatness. When they started to write music together they knew they were on to something big and they decided to make an album. After planning a self-financed, low-key release of their debut album, ‘Mountain‘, in 2012, they were shocked and excited by how the music spread like wildfire worldwide. Within weeks of the Swedish release, they were played on radio stations in the US, the UK, Italy, France and throughout Europe. Rock fans everywhere immediately recognised their hook-filled brand of Hard Rock with tunes such as; ‘Ever See Your Face‘, ‘Reckless‘, ‘Mountain‘ and the outstanding power ballad ‘How Am I‘. Soon they were featured in great rock magazines such as Classic Rock and the legendary Japanese publication, Burrn!. The reviews were excellent, Classic Rock Magazine (8/10), Powerplay (9/10), Rock Hard (8/10), Burrn! (83%); to name a few of the key publications.
Long before the European release of ‘Mountain‘, NUBIAN ROSE were also booked to play the main stage at the first Hard Rock Hell AOR festival in Rotherham 2013. This was the band’s first European show and their appearance was one of the festivals most talked about with Sofia Lilja sporting a Union Jack cat suit for part of the show to mark the event!
With some changes in the band line-up, Nubian Rose is now back with their sophomore album. It’s called Mental Revolution and is clearly a step forward. Christer Åkerlund has produced it and Swedish superproducer, Tobias Lindell(HEAT, Europe, Hardcore Superstar, Avatar, Mustasch), has once again done the mixing. The production is more edgy and bigger in every way; drums and guitars are dominating together with great melodies. Christer and Sofia’s cooperation as a songwriting duo has deepend and matured. It’s obvious that the roots of the Nubian Rose music is coming from the same place as before, but with Mental Revolution they have clearly been taking a big step forward.

Filth will be back in Seattle

The "downtempo" heavy deathcore squad Filth (North Carolina, U.S.) has been bringing their brand of tunes throughout the United States and they have some more cities to visit. They are now in the Southwest, then back to the West Coast and they have also Seattle lined up. Actually, more accurately, they will be returning to the state of Washington because they started their current tour in this area. This publication's concert calendar has been showing the date for a while now: April 8 Angelmaker, Falsifier, Extortionist, Filth, ReEvolution, Species Splicer at Studio Seven, Seattle, WA. Check out the flyer.
OFFICIAL: It isn't very often in today's heavy music scene that the listener can dive right into a band knowing exactly what they're in for. With names that are designed to grab the listener's interest--but often music that fails to do the same--checking out new bands is a gamble, or, was a gamble. With North Carolina's latest addition to the downtempo deathcore scene, Filth give the listener a picture-perfect premonition of their sound before they can even press play. Murkier than a tar pit and harsher than a jackhammer burying into the listener's ears, this sinister Shelby quartet are here for one thing, and one thing only: to inflict the most damage to the listener in the shortest amount of time possible, and they do it with unbelievable efficacy.
Born in 2015 as a side project for guitarist David Gantt, bassist Nathan Pittman and vocalist Dustin Mitchell's main band, InVoker, Filth quickly took on a life of its own, with the purpose of spreading soul-smothering heaviness to the heads of heavy music enthusiast around the country. Erupting out of sheer nothingness with the release of their debut EP, Tales from the Gutter, Filth began like a ball of mud rolling down a steep hill of trash and grime--picking up mass and speed with each passing second. The group played as regional support for heavy music's heaviest hitters before embarking on a co-headlining nationwide tour with InVoker and Vessels, titled the "Tune Down for What? Tour." With one immensely successful stretch of live performances under their belt, and a critically acclaimed display of hyper-dissonant heaviness in the form of their debut EP to match, in fall of 2015, the band took off on their second co-headlining and EP support tour with U.S. Heavyweight legends A Legacy Unwritten--titled "Tales from the Guttour." Meeting with continued success in every venture, the band's intense work ethic and overwhelmingly aggressive style of ultra-heavy deathcore earned them a spot on True Initiative Management's roster--one already packed with enormous talent.
With most of 2015 in the rear view mirror, and a wide-open 2016 ahead of them, this Filthy quartet are poised to continue their dominion over the world of downtempo deathcore, be it with tours, terrifying new tunes or both. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears pressed to the ground--because before you know it, both will be flooded with Filth.

Cadaveric Curse

In Belo Horizonte in the far away lands of Brazil there is a monster lurking, waiting in the shadows, hiding behind the trees, working in obscurity and darkness of the unknown underground. They simply call themselves Cadaveric Curse and they do not release much information about themselves. The music is crazy extreme metal grind with angry animal growling and even angrier primal drumming to call for disaster and chaos of the guitars to the realm of the Cadaveric Curse annihilation of order and scrutiny of the eyes unseen by it. They are Alex Grind and Fabio Grind, two chaos brothers united for the cause of the unapproachable and unreachable sounds. You want names. You want names! Names for the hereafter and names for the now. Cadaveric Curse has three names for you: Sarcófago, Napalm Death and Terrorizer.
Grind maniacs must contact this band and ask them to provide more music and more information. They seem to claim that they have a new recording coming up, but it's not clear because they do not say much online. At the first link below you can three tracks as support for their campaign to destroy music. Listen only if you have a tendency for the fugly sounds of disorder.

rewind: Bad Brains

In the early 80s they were known for their particularly raucous performances in terms of sheer speed and their wild mixture of very fast rock and roll, the kind that many New York punks welcomed with open arms, and of the infusion of reggae. As time went on Bad Brains expanded their music even more, while exploring heavier sounds, like on their album Quickness. The band has had its fair share of personnel issues and other problems, and they are still active today, but for more open-minded music listeners who like old fast sounds and experimentation with genres, Bad Brains will remain as one of the most noticeable 80s bands from the United States. Check out the live performance below from the early days. Below you will also find some of their studio recordings, just for evidence and information. The band's supporters, as expected, disagree vehemently about what are the band's best albums, so it's no use trying to open that can of worms here.
"Bad Brains are an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk, though the band's members have objected to this term to describe their music. They are also an adept reggae band, while later recordings featured elements of other genres like funk, heavy metal, hip hop and soul. Bad Brains are followers of the Rastafari movement.
Originally formed as a jazz fusion ensemble under the name Mind Power, Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs.
Bad Brains have released nine studio albums (one of which is entirely composed of instrumental versions of their early material). The band broke up and reformed several times over the years, sometimes with different singers or drummers. Since 1994, the "classic" lineup of singer H.R. (Human Rights), guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson (H.R.'s younger brother) has reunited, albeit performing sporadically." [Wikipedia]

BIO: Irony Destroyed was formed in 2012 by Nelson “Ecclesiastes” Musyoka. Still young and in high school but that did not stop him from forming a hard-hitting metal band. He wrote some songs and met up with three of his friends to make all their dreams come true.
They played and practiced some covers and recorded two tracks namely, “Think Twice, if Possible Thrice” and, “Sun as a Home” in 2013 when everyone was through with high school. That was until when the members of the band left to continue with their further studies. By then, Irony Destroyed (Earlier) had only recorded two songs in their practice room (On a laptop).
In 2014, Nelson found the Lead guitarist, Lenny Kiano on Irony Destroyed’s Facebook page and boy could he shred. Had some awesome riffs, he was definitely going to be the lead guitarist. Lenny then became in charge of the band and recruiting new members when Nelson left to study as well.
